I think this might help explain why anti-OWS folks

Posted: Nov 13, 2011

Next time you encounter all the OWS naysayer blowback such as has been seen here lately, and especially when accusations of alleged movement “disorganization” and “failure to get its message across” emerge, here’s a little list you could throw down that shows what OWS was able to accomplish in its first 55 days, reflecting locations of visible documented OWS movement presence.  In light of these FACTS, there is simply no way anyone can honestly say the way this movement executed the awesome undertaking of “spreading the word” is anything but impressive.

There are 233 source articles on this that I would be happy to post upon request of all you Doubting Thomas types, but I thought this post was already taking up enough space.  Sorry about the double-space list format.  I C&Ped from one of my single-spaced word docs but it showed up this way.

What EXACTLY is the message they are spreading? I could care less about how far it has gotten, but is it POSITIVE or NEGATIVE agenda? What I see is a mess, a bunch of people wanting handouts from those of us who work hard (umm socialism!), and that is the tip of the iceberg. Again, what EXACTLY do they want/what is their message? I see freeloaders and that ain't all. It is disgusting.

This has been discussed on this forum, in the media, - all over the internet, in all corners of the world

so kindly do not play dumb. What you could or could not care less about and what you choose or do not choose to see is of no interest to me. Your world is shrinking right out from under your feet. If riding your high horse, burying your head in the sand and ignoring the writing on the wall is your idea of coping with that fact, Go. For. It.

Not the person you replied to, but I do have to say - your post was uncalled for - sm

This is totally rude telling someone do not play dumb. His/her message was not "playing dumb", it was asking a simple question - just what is it they want? Because you know what? I'm having a hard time understanding that myself. I work almost every day, so have very little time for news and when I do turn on the TV it's to watch a movie, so don't even go and accuse me of watching "faux" news.

I will read Drudge every once in awhile, but there is too many conflicting reports and this site is a good example. You people are attacking other posters if they don't agree with you as though your opinion is correct and the ones you disagree with is wrong, but you don't even take to debating issues in kind, instead you belittle and attack.

I for the life of me still do not understand the whole thing and it's not "playing dumb". When you have little time for anything but work, and you come to this board, or read something on the internet it's confusing. I thought this all began with some people who are unhappy with wall street and what they are doing. Next thing I read is that it's spreading to other cities. Now I hear there is sickness and people dying (unsure where, it's just something my sister told me), but she didn't go into explanation.

All I know is nobody ever gets anywhere with violence. You didn't add anything to this conversation so it could be that I agree with you on the issues you believe in, but since you didn't add your opinion on the subject in this message, and just posted an attack on the previous poster, I don't know. All I know is this post was very unnecessary and very rude.

What ever happened to civility in this country. People should be able to debate issues without getting nasty or attacking those who don't agree with them.

characterizing a national and global movement joined by millions as "a bunch of people wanting handouts from those of us who work hard" are not only rude, they are ignorant. The rudeness and ignorance was compounded with the insertion of the word "freeloaders" and punctuated with the ominous "tip of the iceberg" warning, all wrapped up in a 3-line post. This is not only an exceedingly juvenile approach to a compelling and complex issue, it is highly offensive when attempts at minimalizing, marginalizing and dehumanizing the legitimate concerns of these groups are encountered. Their function is to inflame, and in that respect, the poster succeeded, yet notably you took no offense with that, and failed to realize that typically, in political discourse, rude begets rude. Your one-sided admonishment implies a double standard that the more rational among us would find unconvincing.

Message to the Troll Patrol

I like to call people trolls because I am:

1) Immature and incapable of having a rational and intelligent debate on anything.

2) Just like the bullies on the playground.

3) I have no legitimate way to refute your claim and lack the skills to debate with you, therefore name-calling like "troll," is all I know."

Grow Up or go Occupy a sandbox.
Immature and incapable of having a rational and intelligent debate. - Your post, described in your own words.

For the past couple of weeks, the troll patrol has been on this forum stalking posters who disagree with his/her views. There is no need for that. If he/she doesn't like the post, then don't reply to it with name-calling.

Last time I checked this was a political forum that welcomed views, opinions, and debates from all political parties.

It is bullying and is also very childish. I just called him/her out on it.
Yes, maybe we should. - sm

I'm not the poster whom you are calling the troll patrol, but all I did was (again, in your words) "just call him/her out." I have nothing more to add, other than to say that "stalking" is a tad exaggerated, dontcha think?

No one is preventing you from taking your grievance to the moderator. Go for it if you think it will help you feel better, but keep in mind that even when the troll patrol is out en force, you are still free to express your views and opinions and that a brief cursory inspection will conclude that all political parties here are well represented.
FYI - Calling someone a troll is not - name calling

Try reading the stickies above from the moderator regarding the rules on this board. When someone says troll... they mean posters who drive by with cheap shots and offer no politicial discussion whatsoever. When someone points them out as a "troll," this is what they mean and are giving other people a heads up to not bother responding. Here, if someone is a troll, they fit the description given by the moderator... not an ugly little man living under a bridge.

how you think these vapid one-line smear campaigns are going to go over at the ballot box next fall? Caution: Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. All the filthy name-calling in the world isn't going to change the fact that OWS represents real people with real issues that your party seems to be completely oblivious toward. We are still one full year out from the election and the math tells us that your party and those they are trying to protect represent a privileged minority that has seen its better days. That just say no strategy is going to backfire on them, it's only a matter of time. Here's another fact of life for ya. OWS and its message has outpaced TP recognition by leaps and bounds in less than 2 months. Don't believe me? Check out the polls to see which agenda has more support.
Bravo! Excellent post. Thank you, - sm

There is a real undercurrent in this country that supports OWS and, as you said, rejected the Tea Party a long time ago. It didn't take long to figure out that the Tea Party represented the very rich and wanted to hurt the poor and middle class.

I've posted on here before about how I actually met them in my town and about how they receive regular radio time from my friend who is a DJ on the radio. My friend and I are not young idealistic infants; he just turned 60, and I'm only two years younger than he is.

In fact, after reading this board, I actually found a GOOD idea that was proposed by the OWS haters who demanded that certain posters open up their homes to these protesters.

I thought, with horror, about the winter and colder weather, and I told my friend that I have a sofabed in my living room that I would be willing to offer to one of the homeless protesters, since the thought of them standing out in sub-freezing temperatures was really terrible.

They're out there trying to help people like me, and I feel it's my duty/obligation to try to help them if I can.
I guess they think “out of sight, out of mind” - Like that’s gonna happen

Mainstream media's initial approach to the movement reflected that sentiment: Just ignore them and they will go away. Meanwhile, a domain name was registered, a General Assembly was incorporated, a few groups protesting budget cuts converged in Manhattan Aug 2, and in the aftermath, they started cobbling a plan for Sept 17. Endorsements and support began emerging once the activism went viral. Though I heard regular reports of this progression on Pacifica, not a peep out of MM could be found. That began to slowly change after Sept 17 when Keith Olbermann started reporting on the dearth of news coverage, and surprise, surprise, MM began mocking the protesters and reporting on arrests. I am also no infant (63 in Dec), and I am sure you can appreciate the 60’s/70s déjà vu this media approach resurrects. Thank goodness, we are no longer stuck in the Paleolithic pre-digital era, when it took literally years to overcome that obstacle in order to move an agenda forward. Lives were lost during that process, as I recall, but the movement and its message endured and ultimately prevailed.

Social media has done a good job of counter-balancing these reports with video and commentary on responses from police, local officials, politicians and other opposing forces. Concurrent growth in support was bolstered with help from a diverse group of folks like Anonymous, Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, Dr. Cornel West, NYC Councilman Charles Barron, Transport Workers Union, even Mayor Bloomberg, whose hands were legally tied by the fact that Zuccotti Park is a private facility, making dismantling of the site problematic. More protests were planned and support continued to grow, despite MM’s and TP/GOP’s best efforts to undermine the movement by launching personal attacks aimed at dehumanizing the protesters. A distinct correlation between the rise in arrest numbers and the growth of support became apparent.

By early Oct, we saw the movement joined by more and more unions, students, seniors, and the unemployed and the growing incidence of arrests and police brutality (meticulously documented by social media) was countered by swelling numbers of supporters at the protests. By Oct 15, OWS had evolved into a decidedly global phenomenon (also well documented as in the OP) while prominent support from journalists became more visible and political leaders began voicing more awareness of the movement and the issues it had raised.

Since that time, containment tactics have escalated and efforts at suppression have become increasingly more aggressive. After all is said and done, the best they can hope for is to force a change in strategy on the part of OWS regarding maintaining a public visible presence, but putting the genie back in the bottle in terms of its message(s) and the political impact OWS will have is another story entirely. Anyone who thinks they can hold THAT at bay is simply deluding themselves.

They are tired of corporate greed, having the ability to influence Congress with large contributions, they are tired of the top 1% incomes going through the roof while our incomes have decreased or remained stagnant for the past 30 years. They are tired of how everything has increased in price and value but what the 99% does has not. They are tired of our jobs being outsourced and offshored to other Countries. They are tired of our supposed "public servants" serving their own interests as opposed to the needs of the people who elected them....need I say more?

I have a friend who attended in NYC, and she said it was the worst experience of her life with smelly, disrespectul people who did not care whose lives they were interrupting all while hurting the local small businesses in the area. They are camped out. They obviously do not want to work, but rather be given something for nothing.... really pitiful.

for those of you living on the Fox Planet out there in the fringosphere, I suppose, but the rest of us, including the millions of OWS supporters in the 565 global locations revealed in the OP, live back here in the real world on Planet Earth. Other than that, there is nothing else in your post worthy of comment.

So, tell me if you live on Planet Earth, where do you get all your information?

Either you are in denial about what goes on or just simply chose to live in an alternate universe.

BTW, Fox is not the only news/opinion station out there. You do know that don't you?
