I don't get our president

Posted: May 19, 2011

"The United States will support efforts for reform across the Middle East and North Africa, including "transitions toward democracy," President Barack Obama said Thursday in what the White House billed as a major speech laying out U.S. policy for the region."

"Obama said there is a "deepening spiral of division between the United States and the Arab world" that needs to be reversed."

"Officials said the president will pledge U.S. economic assistance to Egypt and Tunisia."

"Obama is announcing several programs intended to increase U.S. and international investment, create jobs and spur economic growth in the two countries."

Hey, Mr. President, what about creating jobs in our country and spurring economic growth here...just a thought.  Perhaps you should go golfing and think about it.

;

He also said Palestine's - hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
border should be that of the border back in 1967.

Obama also offered an ultimatum to Syrian President Bashar Assad telling him to either support a democratic transition or "get out of the way."

He bombed Libya without congress's approval.

What...was President of the United States not good enough for him....he wants to take over other countries as well and tell them how to run their countries. Didn't the libs throw a fit when Bush went into Iraq? Why is this okay for Obama to do? Isn't he the one who said our country was arrogant for trying to tell others how to live?

This man is unbelievable. We have a dick-tator in the making here. The way he blames others and gets groups fighting against each other and continually points the finger at others. He rules like a thug. If you disagree with him..the big bully in chief has a closed door meeting with you and all of sudden you agree with him and have seen the light. Wow.

I just don't see how some people don't see him for the big thug that he is.

black. Obama hasn't changed much of what Bush and Cheney did in the Middle East. In fact, he upped the drone attacks...which we all know killed civilians along with the bad guys. I didn't see him close Gitmo either. Then he goes and bombs Libya without congress's approval...which...BTW...is unconstitutional. Now he is giving ultimatums to the Syrian president?

I do tire of hearing rebuttals about what Obama has done with....but Bush was a big poo poo head. Seriously...is that the best argument you people have? Bush and Cheney are gone. Obama is NOW. If you didn't agree with what Bush and Cheney did in the Middle East, how in the he11 can you back Obama on what he is doing over there?

crossroads we now witness in the Middle East, much in the same way there is nothing of value in this post worth responding to in a serious or productive fashion. I prefer to hear the speech, then read the text a time or two, digest its contents, conduct some research to clarify the parts that I question or do not fully understand, become better informed on the issues where my knowledge is lacking and THEN draw conclusions about it BEFORE opening my mouth and voicing a reaction. Thus, I declined to address anything preceding the last sentence, and opted to propose a simple explanation as to why "some people" (the vast majority of us) don't see Obama for the "big thug that he is."

Certain buzz words and catch phrases have been repeatedly surfacing on this forum in the past couple of days. Thug would be one of those. Accusing Obama of wanting to rule the world is another. Apples and oranges comparisons trying to equate Libya with Iraq another. The falsely perceived arrogance (oh my!) of trying to dictate to others how they should live, yet another. I find the worn-out "he blames others and tries to get us to fight each other" chant particularly annoying. I mean really, why not just assemble the choir and belt it out in one big performance? It is not as though we do not already know where all these ideas originate. We have cable news, too, and every now and then, whenever we want to get a good dose of the parallel universe, we all tune in and watch it, to the extent we can tolerate it. The hate-mongering fringosphere is the last place I go looking for an intelligent, informed or useful analysis of foreign affairs, which of course cannot be discussed within the context slaying the messenger and ignoring the message. Do not be fooled by wolves in sheep's clothing. BTW, the only thing he "did" to poor Israel was to say out loud that they should keep their own word, respect the borders established by agreements (which they have signed onto on numerous occasions) in the aftermath of their 1967 land grab and occupation, a work in progress as we speak. Also, articles all over the world, including from the Senior Editor of Haaretz, who also is in the habit of addressing the Israeli PM directly, have been saying the same thing about those internationally recognized 67 borders for years. All he did is say it out loud.
Your statement is totally false! Israel our STRONGEST ally. - Frank

How long do you think this so-called alliance would last if the US were to withdraw ANY of the economic, military and "other" aid dollars, which by conservative estimates as of November 2008 has totaled around $114 billion dollars over the years?

You do not believe these words came straight from the Presiden'ts mouth? - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
I would have said "straight from the horse's mouth" but then you would bash me for that.

I hate to tell ya this but when the President starts telling other countries who should go and who should stay, that's not exactly staying out of their business. That's dictating how they should live. How many times has he done that?

The latest on the Israel speech is just the latest of the many speeches he has made telling countries what to do. Look how he pressured the U.N. to allow bombing so the rebels could gain a foothold.

I would say more right now but have to get off and do some work.
No, I believe these ideas came straight from Flox via your mouth. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
In fact, who said them is of little concern to me, it is WHAT WAS SAID that matters. I am still immeshed in gathering information on such things as the text itself, the timing of the speech, the context that surrounds it, comparing it to the Egyptian speech, what changes have been proposed, what has stayed the same, how it fits into the progression of US Middle East Policy, particularly over the past 50 years, etc, etc.

I am the one who posted about my son who has been the recent target of Islamophobia, who has family (sister, nephew, BIL, and countless in-laws from two marriages), friends and their families (some of whom I have known 40+ years from college, coworkers, my husband's business associates and fellow political activists) in the region (Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Southern Sudan, Palestine, Israel and Yemen) and here (LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, and New York). One of the the activists I know (age 83) has been engaged in this process since 1948. His entire family has been wiped out over the years of occupation in Palestine. Most of the activists (like me) have been at it since 1967 (my entire adult life), the year the borders were "rearranged."

For us, the stakes are quite high and it is impossible to explain the significance of the "Arab Spring" or the importance of US foreign policy at this juncture. Please forgive me if I take a little more time to look beyond the latest Obama bash fest currently coming out of command central and being smeared far and wide by its devoted foot soldiers.
Then you should have read the article from Jack Tapper that I posted. - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
I did not change a thing in that article. It was word for word so his speech was not a smear and it is not a bash fest. I'm sure you can also find a video on the speech on youtube, so listen very carefully to hear every word.

Obama should not be trying to tell the Arab countries what to do. That's for them to decide. He should keep his nose out of most of the world's business and start concentrating on this country. That's what he was elected to do.

I am truly sorry for the trouble your family and friends have been going through and Israel should not get off scott-free, nor do I approve of a lot of the things they have done, but I am all for Israel at least keeping Jerusalem which is THE holy city in the eyes of most Christians and Jews. I think that's the largest sticking point.

Hello. Jerusalem is also considered sacred by Moslems. - It was the first Qiblah, before Mecca
[ In Reply To ..]
Just for starters. Ever heard of Al-Aqsa/Dome of the Rock? There are 3 sites of pilgrimage (Hajj) in Islam: Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Hajj is the fifth Pillar of Islam, fundamental to Muslim practice. Read up on the Night Journey and Ascension (Isra' and Mi'raj). Maybe next time, you will not forget to at least MENTION Moslems along with Christians and Jews when speaking of Jerusalem.
P.S. Serious question as to why you are so 'for' - Backwards Typist

Obama no matter what he does; i.e., defend him to the end? He has shown most everyone that he is human, yet the perception of some is that he is the savior of the world.

What a crazy idea. The guy was elected President. He does great on some things not so great on others. Savior?! LOL. I don't think so. I've never heard even one person say that they thought he was perfect.
You obviously have other issues slanting your views - No one can deny what Obama said in the speech

I am disgusted by this man who thinks he KNOWS how or should run the world. He should just step down. Obama is the WORST leader that I remember in my 50 years.
People get mad when he does and when he doesn't - Oh well!
[ In Reply To ..]
There was a big ruckus about how he, the American President, should lead the world. Then if he comes out with a strong message, part of which I agree with and part I don't, people will say that he's too strong and telling other countries what to do. There is nothing that he could do that could please people who do not want to like anything he does.
I am of the opinion he should address - his own country's
