About the Course
Reasoning is important. This course will teach you how to do it well. You will learn some simple but vital rules to follow in thinking about any topic at all and some common and tempting mistakes to avoid in reasoning. We will discuss how to identify, analyze, and evaluate arguments by other people (including politicians, used car salesmen, and teachers) and how to construct arguments of your own in order to help you decide what to believe or what to do. These skills will be useful in dealing with whatever matters most to you.

Week Eight: Probability and Decisions
PART IV: HOW TO MESS UP ARGUMENTS (or commit common but tempting fallacies)

FAQ
Will I get a Statement of Accomplishment after completing this class?
Yes. Students who successfully complete the class will receive a Statement of Accomplishment signed by the instructor.

What resources will I need for this class?
Only a working computer and internet connection.

What is the coolest thing I'll learn if I take this class?
Nasty names (equivocator!) to call people who try to fool you with bad arguments.

What are people saying about this class?
Here are some remarks from students that have taken the class:

âI'd like to thank both professors for the course. It was fun, instructive, and I loved the input from people from all over the world, with their different views and backgrounds.â

âSomewhere in the first couple weeks of the course, I was ruminating over some concept or perhaps over one of the homework exercises and suddenly it occurred to me, "'Is this what thinking is?" Just to clarify, I come from a thinking family and have thought a lot about various concepts and issues throughout my life and career...but somehow I realized that, even though I seemed to be thinking all the time, I hadn't been doing this type of thinking for quite some time...so, thanks!â

âThe rapport between Dr. Sinott-Armstrong and Dr. Neta and their senses of humor made the lectures engaging and enjoyable. Their passion for the subject was apparent and they were patient and thorough in their explanations.â

The course has also been featured in a number of news articles and news reports. Here are links to some of these:

OMG, do you actually expect anyone to read this drivel? (sm) - LM

You people complain you can't discuss topics in a reasonable manner. Well, I gave you one, and this is what you answer. This is pathetic. There were many things on that list that if you didn't agree with, we could have discussed. Not surprising, really. You can't defend the indefensible. I hope I never hear (ha) another liberal on this board complain that conservatives don't want to discuss issues rationally. I believe the shoes are on the smelly liberal feet, not the conservatives'.

LM, it's free, anonymous, and you can drop out - any time. Plus, you may learn

[ In Reply To ..]
to make arguments so powerful you actually change a mind. Come on. Hit the link. There's an initial forum forming up right now. The lectures are already recorded, and you can listen to the first one right away and unenroll as quickly as you signed up if you don't like it.

Give something new a try?
Change a mind? I am always hearing here, ad nauseam, I might add(sm) - LM
[ In Reply To ..]
that this board is to DISCUSS POLITICAL ISSUES. I posted something that was political, and liberals won't discuss it. I'm not surprised. When you're part of the Obama cult, you don't like to hear anything negative - you libs never let truth get in the way. I don't need your condescending attitude to take a course in more lecturing because it's free. You take it if you're so inclined. Meanwhile, I'll keep posting possible discussion topics and see if any liberals dare address any of the real issues. I won't hold my breath.
Where's the discussion in posting a propaganda - list then tossing insults back and forth?
[ In Reply To ..]
You say you want discussion, so where is it? Post something you hope we can all come a little together on. Throw out a little comment to invite comment back. If you don't want to be taken for an arsonist come to set the forum on fire, spreading dissension instead of discussion, don't act like it.

You KNOW presidents can't always make good on their promises, also that many repeated efforts to do so may be made in future. So why not discuss that? Obama recently delayed rolling out a provision in Obamacare, but it's a bad one that I suspect may be delayed until it just dies. That can be discussed.

Well, I've calmed down and come back. One reason to try the class out is to be able to understand our beliefs--to explain them better to ourselves.

FWIW, there's a really funny Monte Python segment in the second video lecture. BTW, a characteristic of MOOCs is that segments are typically just a few minutes each. None of this sitting in a lecture hall for an hour.

No he is not. Please justify "regime." He'd have Congress in his - palm if that was true.

Really. Regime? Please.

If you seriously believe that, please, in your own words, say why you think this is true.

LM-there is soemthing seriously wrong with the Libs - on this board - Seems they are the only

[ In Reply To ..]
that are completely clueless because they are so mired in the ideology, they cannot reason through anything.

Obamacare all by itself is screwing over every single average American - and all they come up with is mindless, blind devotion to Bozo the Chief that is

-Destroying the 40-hour work week.
-Destroying the job market.
-Destroying medical care, ESPECIALLY for the elderly.
- Destroying employment opportunities.
- Destroying the unions.

I seriously hope that if they belive so strongly in this Bozo he White, they are the ones first hit and hardest hit to give them a taste of reality...probably will not get it. To bad we are not all spared from the evil Obama has dumped on America in more ways than one. They are so blinded by their ideology the only descriptive for them is pathetic.

None of them will be spared the excessive Obamacare taxes, lack of medical care, drop in weekly employment hours, increase in premiums, TAX on those premiums paid on their behalf, employers dropping the spouses and family because the cannot afford to provide coverage under Obamacare, lackm of physicians, rationing to name a few.

Sorry, I couldn't get past "in this Bozo he White." to merit this post - credibility
