Future of the GOP: Big changes are inevitable, but all agree it

Posted: Nov 5, 2012

The GOP would have walked away with this election if it hadn't alienated Hispanic and other minority voters. Minorities are key to the future of the GOP. Birth rates of hispanics alone are above the national average, but  per Pew Research, the GOP is 90% white.

From the Associated Press, "...that's a problem for the GOP. Steep racial divisions this year that put overwhelming numbers of minority voters in President Barack Obama's camp mean the Republican Party must attract more nonwhite voters in coming years, or watch Democrats walk away with a sustained Electoral College majority. "

From the Wall Street Journal:
Many Republicans believe they will eventually win over more Hispanics. They cite the decades-old quip from Ronald Reagan, that Hispanics are Republicans at heart; they just didn't know it yet.

Hispanics have higher marriage rates and church attendance than most Americans. They tend to be strongly antiabortion. They have high rates of entrepreneurship.

In most polls, around 40% of Latinos describe themselves as politically conservative. Yet, when it comes to voting, they are more Democratic now than when Mr. Reagan predicted they would eventually find a home in the GOP. The GOP has lost the support even of the Hispanic evangelical movement, almost entirely over differences on immigration."

The money and power interests in the GOP have been placating and energizing their "base" by antagonizing other groups, particularly Hispanics, but that is going to have to stop--for the sake of their money and power. Ultimately, the large number of authoritarian followers in the base will likely obey their leadership and quiet down, but others will find new leaders and...what? What will those who've lost their home in an overwhelmingly white party do as the GOP inevitably becomes multicultural and multicolored to survive?

And this is only one of the issues forcing big change on the GOP. Things are still going to be interesting after the election. :)

I think Obama and his team have alienated a lot of Hispanics, not Romney - backwards typist

A lot more Hispanics are voting Republican this year. They are frustrated with Obama. They believed in him and he let them down big time.

So the article you copied is not true.

What's your source for THAT? - Umm...

A Heads-up For The GOP's Future Viability.Nov 17, 2012
If you haven't already seen this guy's blog post, it states pretty much what I think the GOP needs to think about if they want to re-build their party into a future winner in the presidential election.  (The only thing I would have added is "women's issues.")  This blog post definitely hits on some of the reasons I've switched from Rep to Dem in the past several elections.   ...

An Unstoppable Progressive Future? Maybe NotSep 21, 2013
A new report tries to stifle Democrats' confidence that demographics guarantee the party's electoral success. But it's not totally persuasive. [Maybe not, but I've known a lot of minority conservatives over the years who are not comfortable with the Democratic party, even if they're forced to vote Democratic to protect themselves now, and I expect them to force change at some point. The only thing certain about the future is that it will be different and it wi ...

Ben Carson Now Wants To Make Future Debates, Well, Less Like A DebateOct 31, 2015
Each candidate will give a statement. No debate. And fewer of them. .....this gets stranger and stranger The GOP candidates need to stop whining, put on their big-boy/girl clothes, and put their best ideas forward in the debate format that has worked well for my whole life. Just because they have no understanding of the issues and have no commendable ideas to put forth, it's still not okay to just do away with the debates. They need to just deal with it and if it's too hot for them ...

From the Washington Post (yeah, still there :): "In recent weeks, Hillary Clinton has reiterated that she will not stay on for President Obama’s second term, unleashing fresh waves of speculation about her plans.  There is hypothesizing that she is merely entering a hibernation period before a 2016 presidential bid. There is talk that she will start her own women’s rights initiative. There is the prospect, too, that this might really be it for one of the most iconic figures in ...

Whether You Agree With Apr 07, 2017
Trump acted illegally!  What he did was the actions of a dictator.  He broke the constitution and attacked without congressional approval.  We live in a democracy and one of the rules on an attack like this is that it needs congressional approval. Do you not remember what Bush went through before we invaded Iraq?  It took a long time for him to get approval but he did.  Trump is a loose cannon and acted on his own and broke our laws of democracy. I do believe that we need to bring in more tax revenue.  I agree with the pres on that one.  However, I don't believe raising the taxes on the rich is the answer.  That alone still will not cover the amount of money we are spending.  I also think that the initial step in bringing in more tax revenue is to close loopholes in the tax code.  We are in major need of tax reform here.  What good is taxing the rich more when you have big companies like GE not paying A ...
