Former Federal Election commission chairwoman Ann M. Ravel

Posted: Apr 18, 2017

on social media. She presented her remarks in a speech at UC Berkeley, calling for regulations against “fake news.”  Speaking at an event called “Future of Democracy,” Ravel argued the proliferation of “fake news” and political advertising on platforms like Facebook influenced elections. She warned that the lack of disclosure by the creators of these campaigns was becoming a huge problem... During her tenure as the chairwoman of the FEC, Ravel previously called for right-leaning websites like the Drudge Report to be “regulated,” and blamed hostile responses towards her proposals on “misogyny.” She claimed it was within the purview of the Federal Election Commission to oversee internet political activities, including the airing of political viewpoints. In 2015, the Democrats tried, but failed to expand the FEC’s regulatory powers to cover social media posts and other forms of political speech on the Internet, which are not subject to the same scrutiny as political advertisements on old media. At the time, liberal watchdogs complained to the FEC with allegations that (then-probable) presidential candidates like Jeb Bush and Martin O’Malley were skirting finance laws to campaign. Conservatives managed to stall the vote, fearing that the additional powers would chill political speech on the Internet. Since then, Revel has only doubled down. In her speech at UC Berkeley, Revel claimed that companies like Facebook have “no real knowledge” of who sponsors the posts of political viewpoints on their platforms.;

Another activist who can't control political narrative - anymore.

Bipartisan Deficit CommissionFeb 06, 2010
Last month, a bipartisan commission went down in flames in the Senate after 7 republicans who sponsored the bill voted against it. Now, Obama is putting together a bipartisan commission and the republicans are still complaining it's not good enough. Obama is telling them to come to the table and present their ideas. They are saying no. And then accusing him of not listening. The problem seems to be that the republicans expect Obama to follow their platform (tax breaks for big busines ...

U.S. Deficit Commission Recommends Changes To SSNov 10, 2010
(The true suggestions will be coming out on Dec. 1.) U.S. Deficit Commission Recommends Changes to Social Security A draft proposal by the deficit commission suggests curbing Social Security benefits and raising the retirement ageto 68. It is currently 67 years for retirees to receive full benefits. The panel leaders also propose reducing the annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. The increase to age 68 would be implemented by 2050 and then would increase again to 69 by 2075.&n ...

Deficit Commission Final VoteDec 03, 2010
Guess it's back to the drawing board. It's true that a commission that began with only limited authority failed in its most significant goal, which was to win at least 14 votes among the 18 members. Fourteen votes were needed to send the package to Congress as an official recommendation and force a vote on the proposals. It's also true that prominent members of Congress on the committee took a walk on the commission report. That group included Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), who will ...

9/11 Commission Chairman Says Would-be Plane Bomber 'did Us A Favor'Jan 05, 2010
(Probably will "boost" McCain's campaign, as well, in his next campaign. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/24/johnmccain.uselections2008) By John ByrneMonday, January 4th, 2010 -- 8:56 am The Republican chairman of the Bush Administration's 9/11 Commission declared Sunday that the would-be-terrorist who tried to blow up a plane en route to Detroit "probably did us a favor." The GOP chairman's quote raised eyebrows; by his logic, the Sept. 11, 2001 attackers may also have ...

This Election Ends The Political Era Beginning With Reagan's Election.Oct 25, 2012
"The last of the Reaganites: If Mitt Romney is elected, he will be the fourth Republican president in the Reagan regime. That regime is no longer in its glory days. Demographic shifts have weakened the Republican electoral coalition, while Republican politicians have grown increasingly radical and ideological."  Why the GOP Should Fear a Romney Presidency By Jack M. Debt Commission Report Targets Social Security And MedicareNov 11, 2010
As I told my little Republican friend, biotch, vote and ye shall receive! For some reason, I don't think all the old people that voted in numbers this last election were actually planning for their Medicare to be cut! Today's upcoming report by the White House's fiscal commission is expected to include recommendations to raise the retirement age for Social Security and cut Medicare benefits -- two policy prescriptions that will be met with deep opposition from Democrats a ...

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission Is Not Letting The Black Panther Case Go AwayJul 08, 2010
Those who don't like Fox News will miss a really good report by Megan Kelley with Ashley Taylor, a member of the U.S. Commission of Civil Rights. and also a former DOJ from VA. The video is there of their chat. It is important to hear and to keep following up this story that MSM does not report. "The bipartisan panel investigating allegations that the Justice Department wrongly abandoned a case against the New Black Panther Party plans to issue a new round of subpoenas and call for a separ ...

building sports stadiums says President Obama in his new budget proposal. President Obama’s most recent budget proposal takes aim at a tax exemption that has helped drive an explosion in publicly-financed sports facilities across the United States, a move that would end federal taxpayers’ role in subsidizing the construction of stadiums and arenas that often provide little economic benefit to their cities and states. As it stands now, cities and states can help pay for st ...

Is No One Noticing That The Federal Government Feb 23, 2015
Read the headlines and you'll find that there's virtually no small corner of your life that the Federal government isn't trying to exert control under this administration through an enormous body of regulations that either already have been, or will be, implemented. You like meat?  Grab it while you can, because feed lots are "harmful to the environment". You like water?  The EPA is proposing to make every drop of water on the face of the land a "waterway" over which i ...

What Will The Federal Bureaucrats Do When Their AgenciesDec 17, 2016
First, I hope a lot of them are polishing up their resumes.  The federal government is as bloated as a hog that got into the corn crib. Second, those who remain will want to delete those porn sites from their browser bookmarks. Third, they'd better get used to working.  By which I mean, working.  You know...work.  Labor.  Toil.  Getting things done.  Meeting deadlines.  Taking care of business.  ...and not so much of the "retreats" with hot tu ...

Federal Judge To Stein: Go Away.Dec 08, 2016
When I was considering the various candidates, I gave Stein a serious listen, and quickly realized that I probably wouldn't even consult her as a physician, much less entrust her with high office.  The woman's ideas were simply goofy.  ...and the electorate resoundingly said so. Sadly, instead of simply allowing her legacy to be one of many who have aspired to the Presidency but failed, she has forever secured her position among the lowest of political life forms - namely, ...

Guns In Federal Facilities.Jul 18, 2015
I really don't get the prohibition on guns in recruiting offices, etc.  Lots of federal facilities have armed officers, as anyone who's ever visited Washington DC knows - or are politicians and bureaucrats the only ones who deserve protection?  Heck, 3 years ago I took my FIL to the local Social Security office to file for his benefits and not only was there an armed officer walking around the office, but the employees worked behind bullet-proof glass with a little slot in i ...

Arresting Federal Authorities For Implementing ACA.Nov 14, 2012
Good luck with that!  Geezz! Rep. Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield) is one of the nine from Wisconsin who told the Campaign for Liberty he would back legislation to declare Obamacare illegal and allow police to arrest federal officials who take steps to implement it in Wisconsin. He said he believes the health care law is unconstitutional, despite the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that it passes constitutional muster.   Link to full article in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Online: h ...

Facebook - No State/federal TaxesFeb 17, 2013
It hasn’t drawn much attention, but Facebook’s first annual earnings report contains an accounting gem: a multibillion-dollar tax deduction for the cost of executive stock options and share awards. Even though Facebook (FB) reported $1.1 billion in pre-tax profits from U.S. operations in 2012, it will probably pay zero federal and state taxes—and even receive a federal tax refund of about $429 million—according to a Feb. 14 statement from Citizens for Tax Justice. The tax-research ...

Trafficante: We Are Prisoners Of The Federal ReserveJul 23, 2016
There's no way to know for sure, but given what happened to Lincoln and JFK after they bucked the international banksters I'm willing to bet that this speech is what got Jim Trafficante imprisoned.  (The Fed was officially established in 1913, but the international cabal was around long before then, controlling currencies, etc.) Americans are Prisoners of the Federal Reserve -- JT addressing the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993 ...

Federal Court Strikes Down Texas Voter ID LawAug 30, 2012
It was the state's second major loss in court in three days, coming after a separate federal panel ruled Tuesday that Texas' Republican-dominated Legislature failed to avoid "discriminatory purposes" when drawing new maps for congressional districts and both houses of the state Legislature to reflect the Texas' booming population. A report by the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan legal think tank in New York, determined that new voting restrictions could suppress the vote ...
