Conservative Case for Gay Marriage

Posted: Mar 25, 2013

I loved this article and I love even more the obvious turn of the tide regarding same-sex marriage.  It's mainly about a former Bush aide, explaining why conservatives shoudl support same-sex marriage.

...One hundred thirty-one prominent Republicans have signed a pro-same-sex marriage legal brief that is clearly at odds with the House GOP leadership and the party's platform in the most recent election.

..."if you believe in freedom, if you believe in limited government, if you believe in family values, then allowing adults who love each other to form families is something that makes a lot of sense."

...Mehlman compares the right to marry to other fundamental rights conservatives embrace — for example, the right to bear arms and the right of corporate free speech embodied in the Supreme Court's controversial 2010 decision striking down the ban on corporate spending in candidate elections.

...Alex Lundry, 35, who was director of data science for Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign and who also signed the Mehlman brief, is representative of that younger generation. Like most in his age group, he has always supported gay marriage. "For me, I think it's kind of a no-brainer that if you believe in freedom, then you should believe that gays and lesbians have the right to get married."

Nice to hear it compared to other fundamental rights. - Also, half of us are 15-44, and

this group is overwhelmingly for minding one's own business on this. If the GOP wants to woo the young it just has to change.

It is mind blowing to me that gay marriage is even a debate. - Me

I don't understand how if can even be an option to take away a PERSON'S right to do something, if that action doesn't hurt anyone else. It is mind blowing that so much time, effort and money is put into this.

It's mind-blowing to me that we speak of governments - performing sacred rites. Most states

[ In Reply To ..]
make it perfectly clear that they make no pretense of sacredness, that they perform CIVIL unions.

This nonsense of bringing the word marriage into it has caused a lot of grief, and the gay community has a good share of the responsibility for it. They came very close to getting legal civil unions approved in California long ago but insisted that the law use the term "marriage." With all the legal rights of union secured by the power of the state, they could have gone on to fight with their churches/spiritual groups for the right to be married or otherwise joined in sacred union by them.

I'd really like to see the Supremes clear this up--that the separation of church and state means a state-issued certificate is a legal document establishing a legal relationship under civil law. That's a lot, after all. The rest should be between individuals and their churches.

Well, as long as most of the world is calling it - sm

"marriage," and people who get married in a court house are considered "married," and most (if not all) applications/forms/documents you fill out ask if you are single, widowed, or "married" (NOT if you are in a civil union), then I guess the word "marriage" is still at issue here. Right?
Yes, it is an issue. But most states do not issue "marriage - licenses" even if people call them that. As
[ In Reply To ..]
for Russia and Nigeria, etc., they will of course serve or abuse their people as their people allow. It's American law at issue here.
I chose the wrong word... - sm

When I said "world," I should have used "country," or some other word to imply that I meant the US. I actually didn't mean the rest of the world literally.
Okay. :) - nm

My MarriageJun 27, 2015
So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS. Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege. The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...

Same-sex Marriage. Excellent Dec 02, 2009
A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj. Nidal Hasan, the accused killer of 13 people at Fort Hood, had entered the officers club there with a nice handbag on his arm, perhaps a Gucci tote, he would have been out of the Army by the end of the week. Since he was merely antisocial, a misfit, an incompetent psychiatrist and a likely Islamic fanatic, he was retained and promoted. This says something about America. On the subject of gays, we a ...

Marriage Opinions PleaseOct 23, 2014
May I please vent and get a few opinions on this?  My husband works with a lady who developed a crush on him.  I would not call my husband "flirty" but he is one of those people who are extremely nice all of the time and I could see myself even getting the wrong idea and maybe thinking he was flirting with me if I didn't know him.  So, the lady he works with apparently developed a crush (we have been married 18 years) and she knows a mutual friend of mine and spoke about my h ...
