Call to rescind pay increases

Posted: Jan 2, 2013

Alaska's senators are joining a growing group of lawmakers urging President Obama to rescind a recent executive order granting pay increases to Congress and other federal officials, saying the move doesn't jibe with the country's debt crisis.

Sen. Mark Begich said on his Facebook page that if the American people don't get an automatic pay raise then neither should members of Congress. Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Monday she was "stunned" when she heard lawmakers would be getting a bump in pay.

"We haven't been able to produce a budget in three years," she said. "The last thing this Congress needs right now is a pay increase."

Obama signed an executive order last week that will lift a ban on pay freezes for federal employees.

Rank-and-file members of Congress would all see a $900 bump next year -- up from $174,000. Congressional leaders will receive a slightly higher raise, with the House speaker receiving a $1,100 salary increase to $224,600. The top two Senate leaders will see pay rise $1,000, to $194,400.

Vice President Biden, meanwhile, will see his pay increase from $225,521 last year to $231,900 after his raise goes into effect March 27, 2013.

But the pat on the back came as a surprise to some, given the lack of progress all year toward a deal to head off the looming fiscal crisis -- which includes $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts. Even if that is resolved, Washington has still done relatively little to address the more than $16 trillion debt.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., introduced legislation Monday that would rescind the pay raises.

“I am calling on my colleagues in the House and Senate to rescind President Obama’s executive order that gives members of Congress a pay raise," she said in a statement. "This executive order was not requested by Congress and we should reject it. We have a spending problem in our country and we should be looking for areas to cut spending. At a time when families across the country are cutting back we should not increase government spending and add to the debt burden by giving members of Congress a pay raise. We need to begin with ourselves and I urge my colleagues to join me in this effort.”

Republican Sen. Rob Portman said now is not the time for bigger salaries in Washington -- at least not until the country can deal aggressively with its debt and deficit problems.

"At a time when our country is facing record debt and trillion-dollar deficits, the last thing Washington should do is reward itself with a pay increase," the Ohio senator said. "I am calling on President Obama to withdraw his recent executive order raising federal salaries -- including for members of Congress. Until a long-term deficit reduction agreement is reached, we should not consider increasing the pay for Congress."

Obama also OK'd raises for circuit and district court judges.

who decided not to shorten his Hawaiian vacation any longer and left before signing the bill. Besides, since it has not been signed yet, this may not have been included in the deal. Perhaps the ones bringing up the subject again know more than the general public does about it. It does not seem fair for the middle class (again) to bear the brunt of any raises on taxes and no spending cuts whatsoever...deferred for what? another four years? Just not right.

You-know-who took his autopen to Hawaii and - signed it yesterday.

How many different sources must be posted before you are convinced that it's in the bill? One would expect that, at the very least, the REPS, including MB, who voted on the bill would be aware of the part that dealt with THEIR pay issue, before signing onto her irrelevant proposal. Can you say "grandstanding?" Guess they were too immersed in the palace intrigue and too busy orchestrating their SOH coup to bother actually reading the thing.

Your sniper fire about the president's return to Hawaii to salvage what is left of his FAMILY'S holiday time together should stand alone and be allowed to fester in its own stench.

I think that too much is being made of this....sm - VTMT

executive order lifting the four year ban on pay raises for federal employees thereby giving ALL federal employees a teeny tiny raise of 0.5%, that is just half of 1%. This includes such employees as postal workers, the janitor in the federal courthouse, FBI, CIA, nurses in the VA hospitals, all civil service employees, not just the US Congress.

Meanies cutting loose because they think this gives - them an excuse to hurt others. nm

This has nothing to do with postal workers or janitors - It has everything to do with Congress

It is about Congress giving themselves pay raises for failing. Sorry, JB can leave with his measly 225K or others with their 175K salaries. You don't give people a raise for failing at their job.

My understanding is they are trying to stop members of "congress" from getting pay raises, not some janitor.

I can't stand MB (i.e. high school cheerleader) but she is right on this one, as are other members standing up. We have a congress who is throwing us off a cliff (of course they don't have to worry as they are all set for life and it doesn't affect them), but you don't reward them when they are failing at their jobs by giving them a pay increase. There is a saying we used to have in the Army - Mess up and move up. Guess it extends to congress too.

and their obscene politicization of THAT, which infuriated, betrayed Republican pols brought to the light of day yesterday, instead of wasting time and energy with something that has already been fixed and signed into law. Call me crazy, but I imagine that is an opinion shared by millions of folks on both sides of the aisle.

That makes me feel real secure - about our Army...

the ban on raises that has been in place for ALL federal employees, more than 3 million of them. Congress and the executive branch are a mere drop in the bucket. To put it all in perspective, a 0.05% raise for a government employee making $50,000 a year equals a weekly increase before taxes of $5! Of course MB has the right to present a bill to continue the freeze for members of congress and I would support that.

But don't you think that with all Americans hurting and all - backwards typist

wages going down not up (and not just MTs), over the past [how many] years, that this is not the time for federal employees to receive raises?

If the American people, who pay the salaries of those of federal employment, don't get raises, why should they?

"Hurting and all" federal employees somehow - aren't working Americans? No,

[ In Reply To ..]
it's fine with me. It's a pathetic little raise, and they're way overdue.
Didn't say they aren't working Americans. Said - backwards typist

that those who pay their salaries are hurting (meaning you, me, and every other taxpayer whose wages are stagnant or went down) that now is NOT the time for them to get raises.

When the economy is better; when our wages start to go up again, then I can see them getting a raise -- but I'm not including Congress...not until THEY show us they deserve one. According to Congress, they agree they (Congress) aren't worthy of a raise right now. ;-)

One Of The Adaptive Responses To Minimum Wage IncreasesOct 28, 2014
Businesses don't just sit idly by when wages are pushed up by artificial means such as mandatory minimum wage increases.  They take one or more of a whole range of adaptive measures that are available to them to protect their profits - cutting staff, cutting the hours of staff, demanding more of existing staff, reducing non-wage benefits and investing in labor-saving automation.  What I didn't mention is that, from a purely fiscal "spreadsheet" standpoint, the greater the (a ...
