California Prop 187 in 1994 LOST California for the GOP

Posted: Nov 7, 2012

red for Reagan and H.W. Bush, but NO more. California's gone very blue in Presidential elections ever since.

For those who don't remember, 187 was an attempt by conservatives to deny schooling and healthcare to illegal immigrant children. It outraged MANY of all backgrounds, but it especially activated the Hispanics it was aimed at; and although it was later voided as unconstitutional, the damage it did to the GOP lives on.

If no 187, we might well have woke up to a President-Elect Romney this morning. If no pandering to a spiteful, bigoted base by the GOP this election even, perhaps...President-Elect Romney.

Just a thought for pubs to chew on.

I remember 187. - RC

I wasn't old enough to vote at the time, I was still in school. In fact, I was just starting high school. Our school was about 50% white kids and 50% Hispanic kids, Asian kids, black kids, etc, mostly Hispanic kids. None of us really realized that there was a racial issue until that prop came up and people started talking about illegal immigrants, etc. Now I know for a fact many of the kids I went to school with and was friends with came to this country under the radar, and I couldn't image any of them being shipped away from us. I was not alone in my feelings, and prop 187 did not pass, but it still left us feeling tainted.

More recently, prop H8te came along and stirred us up again, and I was shocked that it passed. My city was overwhelmingly against the proposition, so I apparently lived in a bubble in that regard. I was terribly disappointed when it passed. I love my state very much, and I hope it can be revisited in the future, to a different end.

That was quite a rant!

An old white conservative is on TV right now saying they have to find a - way to deal with immigration RESPECTFULLY!

Yes. You can almost see the lightbulb that went on in his head, like floating in a cartoon bubble.

SUCH a radical notion. No to illegal crossings. No to creating jobs here FOR people here but requiring them to enter illegally, then cheating and abusing them. Yes, to treating people decently.

I'd say a real advance in this knuckle-dragger's thinking is already being made. Nothing like hitting money men in the pocketbook to get their attention. (And losing an overly business-friendly presidency WILL cost them big).

Illegal - NO benefits - Should be my choice - Tax Payer, Not moocher

[ In Reply To ..]
Not tax-payers debt, if parents are so irresponsible to bring their children with no legal status....should not be our burden. Should be sent to their home country and should be those individuals' responsibility. If I do something illegal, I will be punished, not rewarded. I know I will get lots of hate mail, but enough is enough. There are so many immigrants in our country that came to our country through legal channels and actually support their families....by all means come legally and we all will welcome with warm hearts and open arms.

You're very sincere, but the idea that children should be - turned away from ERs outraged most

people, who were shocked and disgusted. Most importantly, it was a real eye-opener about the GOP, including to many conservatives about what their party had become and the hateful ideas they had inadvertently been empowering. The vast majority of churches came out against 187, leaving no doubt in the minds of decent people that it was a shameful manifestation of our very worst faults as a society.

As for those who supported it anyway? They got what they deserved. Rejection of their ideas and from then to now years of failure and disappointment.

The whole point of this thread, Payer, was to point out that what began in California, and other places, is now a national situation. Put a leash on the meanspiritedness or be prepared for years of bitter disappointment.

When Nuance laid off all California MTs, I began to wonder what was happening but that was employees.  TTS wrote me and said they will not hire any from California. How awful this whole thing is.  It is apparent that the school officials just wanted to avoid any unrest, but they ended up setting the stage anyway.  I don't think they could have avoided it no matter what they did, but it seems it would have been much better if they had announced that there would probably be those who choose to wear the American flag.  The students should have been counseled on how to handle situations such as these as a group, and made fully aware of the c ...

What a crazy political climate in that state. I feel for ya'. Banks were mandated to make these risky loans, then were asked to absorb the financial loss. that many of the exchange plans will not have the same doctors as the non-exchange plans. Blue Shield will only offer 50% of the doctors and only 40% of the hospitals as the same non-exchange plans. I guess you have to sign up for it before you know what's in it. Pun intended. The silver lining to all of this is that market forces are about to be re-introduced into the health CARE industry. Anyone On Covered California (Obamacare)?Mar 05, 2015
I am thinking of letting go of my terrible work insurance where the premiums are nearly $200 per month. I can quailfy for subsidies from Obamacare because my income is so disgustingly low. I'm wondering if anyone has trouble with getting prescriptions covered? Do you have to pay full price for them and are those costs rolled into the deductible? Did you have to change doctors? I believe I would have to do that if I select the bronze plan. I figured out the cost of my current premiums and ...

California Illegal Immigrant TuitionNov 16, 2010
I should not be surprised.  Leave it to the idiots in California.   The California Supreme Court has reversed a lower court holding and sided with California Regents and illegal aliens on the issue of in-state tuition breaks. Part of the story is from another news source.   The unmistakable contrail of a missile streaking into the California sunset was captured on video last night by a KCBS news helicopter flying over Los Angeles at around 5 p.m. Pacific time. The missile firing drew more attention when local news stations were told by Navy and Air Force officials that they did not launch a missile last night. Flying above Los Angeles, the crew aboard the helicopter estimate ...

Obama Stimulus Funds Went To California Feb 20, 2017
The 2009 stimulus package funded millions of dollars for safety improvements for a dam in California that was in “good shape,” but not to the Oroville Dam that is now on the verge of a spillway crisis. Nearly 200,000 residents north of Sacramento were ordered to evacuate after fears that erosion would cause the emergency spillway to fail, which would lead to “catastrophic flooding“ from a 30-foot wall of water. Despite more than a decade of warnings about Oroville, there is no publ ...
