Another extreme measure in Texas

No joke: some Texas schools putting cameras in cafeteria to monitor food consumption...don't touch those fries, Tubby!

Taters are cheap. - Old Woman

I have long had an issue with the quality of food served in school cafeterias. Most of it is high-fat, high-carb, high-calorie, easy-to-prepare food that offers little to no food value. Sure, the general idea is that they follow the food pyramid guidelines, but they do so with foods that are nutritionally empty. And we wonder why we are raising a generation of picky, overweight eaters. Go figger!!

1st step to solving a problem is defining its nature & scope. - Extreme measure to some

logical common sense to others. Did you read the article or just the irrelevant flopped humor in Reuters lead sentence?

Childhood obesity has doubled in age groups 2-5 and 12-19 and tripled in age group 6-11 in the past 30 years with a corresponding hike in obesity-related type 2 diabetes typically associated with adult onset. Other adult ailments in children, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea (sometimes leading to learning disablities and memory problems), higher risk for heart disease, liver disease, orthopedic problems and asthma, are associated with childhood obesity and re on the rise.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I seen nothing extreme about studying the eating habits of school children or efforts to reverse this trend.

you should. And it's not a documentary slamming one political party and praising the other (I wouldn't do a general recommendation of something like that). It's a good starting point to get some insight into what is going on with our food industry and its effect on society. Trust me, if you did and then went back and read the article you posted over again, any concern over a big brother style camera wouldn't be as strong (from your post, I got that that's the part you have an issue with... apologies if I'm wrong).

It is absolutley laughable that the USDA is funding this study. If they want to know what is contributing to childhood obesity, they can save a lot of money, skip the cameras, and simply get a mirror and look into it. They play a huge part.

USDA - Fed up

[ In Reply To ..]
I have 2 average, healthy kids. They drink vitamin D whole milk at home because it is what my husband prefers, and 2% at school, because that is what is available, at least until this year. The USDA has decided that school children need to cut back to 1% or skim milk, and according to the woman in charge of the their meals has told me that starting next year if they want chocolate or strawberry milk, it has to be skim only. Apparently that extra 1% of milk fat in a single 8 ounce container five days a week is what causes childhood obesity, who knew?

High fat intake interferes with glucose sensors, cell absorption - Triggers type 2 diabetes

[ In Reply To ..]
and makes overall diabetic managment less efficient according to a recent extensive US study. Could be their decision influenced by that study.

I get irritated because I have an underweight child - All of this focuse on obesity

is actually detrimental to him. I have been advised by his doctor to have him drink only whole milk because he needs the calories. The school has asked me not to send whole milk. I send him Muscle Milk protein shakes and have been told that this is unacceptable. I send him a tiny candy bar as a treat and they take it away. I send protein bars for a snack and am told that this is inappropriate. Meanwhile, this school who is so concerned with being the food police for my son's healthy lunches (aside from the one Hershey's miniature bar I sent once) serves chili cheese Fritos in the cafeteria. It makes absolutely no sense. I do not have my child eat their lunches because we try not to feed him that sort of crap, but I have been confronted nearly every day with something that I have put in his lunch or snack bag. I don't send him juices or koolaid or cookies or cakes. One candy bar and protein supplements. The whole thing is out of control.

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Anyone See That New TLC Show Extreme Couponing?Jan 05, 2011
I only saw one episode and am addicted. It's insane! For those of you who have not seen it, this show follows 4 people who are considered extreme couponers.  These people spend hours and hours finding and cutting out coupons to save money. It shows how many items they bought, what they bought, what their original bill would be, and how much they actually paid after their coupons. They have a system down, very organized almost to the point of OCD. They showed their stacks upon stacks of ...

Extreme Weather At All Time Lows As Climax Hoax Apr 29, 2017
The Church of Global Warming has many followers and, because it’s a cult-like religious belief to them, no amount of hard data will ever convince them they adhere to the teachings of a false god. Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon the non-establishment, honest alternative media to report what is and what isn’t: And what isn’t is the supposed increase in “extreme weather” due to “global warming/climate change” caused by humans. Climate Depot points this out in a new report tha ...

Texas Rolling BlackoutsFeb 03, 2011
