A simple law that would completely disrupt the entrenched

Posted: Sep 8, 2016

"No financial contribution, to include contributions-in-kind, made by any individual, group, organization or other entity to promote the candidacy of any candidate for office shall exceed $100 in total in any calendar year, whether made directly to such candidate or to any organization that has been established for the purpose of electing such candidate." In other words, no one and no corporation, union, etc. can donate more than $100 per year to elect (or defeat) any candidate, whether it's given directly or through a PAC. Period. End of song. No one has more influence in elections than the average citizen, just because they have money. Of course, I say a "simple law", but the law itself would probably need to be made more comprehensive to include various ways that people might try to get around the law...for instance, giving funds to others to donate on their behalf. The mere fact that someone has a lot of money should not give them one iota of greater influence than the average hard-working American citizen. If "contributions" are a form of political "speech", as SCOTUS has declared, the principal of one-citizen-one-vote must still be preserved. Until we get money out of the equation, it will be money that buys electoral outcomes. This leaves the average citizen completely powerless. ;

P.S. "Contributions-in-kind" are nonmonetary favors - like using a private jet, etc.

[ In Reply To ..]
Contributions-in-kind are rarely discussed for the simple reason that they fall under the radar. The fact is, we have very little idea what huge monetary equivalents are "contributed" in the form of contributions-in-kind. It might be something like using a corporation's executive villa in Aspen for a few days of respite during an arduous campaign, etc.

It might be publishing something favorable about you in my newspaper's editorial page (as opposed to a genuine news article).

It might be a video that an organization creates to support a candidate and puts up on YouTube.

Anything that can have a dollar value attached to it is a contribution-in-kind.

$100 a year, whether monetary or having a monetary value. That's it. Period.

Americans: Rise Up Against Entrenched Pieces Of Disgusting CrapSep 09, 2016
Let me explain this to sincere liberals who love this country: Your last hope is not Clinton, but Trump. Remove the party blinders. There have been nearly 70 years of liberal dominance in this nation's inner cities and other poor communities. There has been no shortage of money (almost $11 trillion). ...Now, if you DARE, take a drive around any inner city. Okay - did you survive? Great! And what did you see that the liberal philosophy has given us? Vote the same, get the ...

Anti-Israel Students Disrupt Israeli Ambassador'sFeb 15, 2017
On Monday night, an event put on by the Columbia University chapter of Students Supporting Israel (SSI) was disrupted repeatedly by anti-Israel attendees. The event centered around Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon giving a lecture to a crowd of 300 students. Originally, the crowd was going to have invited pro-Israel students and alumni who wanted to hear Danon speak, but the university would not allow this. According to The Algemeiner, Columbia University forced SSI to slash the number of in ...

Now For Something Completely DifferentAug 05, 2011
If you get really bored this weekend, some delightfully amusing snippets of unabashed hypocrisy is flying around the internet about Chris Christie's appointment of Sohail Mohammed.  Most of them center around this crazy notion that you can't let someone who might let religion color their decisions on the court.  I'll bet you there will be a lot of partnered but unmarried gay and lesbian science teachers with pregnant rape-victim daughters who sure as heck home nothing li ...

How to cut government spending: WHERE TO CUT – DISCRETIONAL SPENDING Unnecessary government programs should be eliminated, such as agricultural subsidies, “corporate welfare,” and tax credits for favored industries.  These programs do not serve the interests of the general public, and the beneficiaries do not need government support.  Agricultural subsidies primarily benefit big agribusinesses and wealthy landowners, for example, while driving up food prices for all ...

Today mortgage is officially late. I didn't sleep last night and usually sleep every other night due to exhaustion from not sleeping the night before. this not long ago.  It is funny, but the point is simple and valid.   Father-Daughter Talk A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and was for distribution of all wealth. Simple Solution For Conservatives.Oct 14, 2009
If you are unhappy with the current administration, start volunteering your time, put your money where your mouth is, and get more conservatives out to vote in future elections.  If your candidates have the majority of votes, you will get the change you seek.  If your candidates do not have the majority of votes, then you are obliged to abide by the laws set forth by those elected to office by the majority.  That is how democracy works. Simple But Intriguing Tax Plan -Jan 10, 2013
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing to eliminate Louisiana’s income and corporate taxes and pay for those cuts with increased sales taxes, the governor’s office confirmed Thursday. The governor’s office has not yet provided the details of the plan. “The bottom line is that for too long, Louisiana’s workers and small businesses have suffered from having a state tax structure that is too complex and that holds back economic prosperity,” Jindal said in a statement released by ...
