A big, national reason why more jobs aren't being created:

Posted: Sep 21, 2012

Link to CNC special report on jobs--"What's really going on out there."

"Discussions with numerous middle market company CEOs on the subject were striking in their uniformity, even though the industries represented were wildly different: All said their hiring was relatively flat because they were aggressively using technology to get more output from the same number of employees."

http://www.cnbc.com/id/48326918/Technology_Grows_Freelance_Economy

NOTE: This is actually good news: A nationwide trend of employers concentrating on making existing employees MORE valuable--instead of eliminating even more jobs. My question is, will we see more unemployed people able to transition into jobs like these by making retraining more affordable?

or like in the MT cases....getting more work out of them.... - anon9

for less pay and benefits, instead of hiring more employees.

Yes, 'fraid so, but at least it is a change from - a strong trend of job elimination. But note

[ In Reply To ..]
that the national trend described is for greater production from specifically USE OF TECHNOLOGY, not from the greater exploitation that we are currently suffering in our field.

In MT, we are unusually hard hit because of an especially large number of people willing, and apparently able, to continue in the work for much less than they could get in other positions they could transition to.

FWIW, many industries have trouble filling jobs for lack of people available to do the work. Obviously, those wages are holding and even increasing in some cases.

I have been doing a lot of job searches recently... - anon3

due to "elimination" of my three (3) different transcription jobs due to EMR and VR. What I am finding during my job search is that there are a LOT of available jobs out there, but the biggest thing is the college degrees involved. MANY of even the more menial jobs, like customer service rep, proofreader, etc REQUIRE a BA in "an associated field." MA in this BS in that...even "car salesman," which was never required in the past. This is a big deterent in finding a job in today's market....AND they still only start out paying at $10 an hour!! These aren't "jobs", this is "exploitation!" ANY kind of a college degree should be worth more than $10 an hour!
Agree. You know, when I went to college, a full schedule - at our local community college cost
[ In Reply To ..]
about $150 for me as a LOCAL resident, that was for five 3 to 4-credit classes. The state university cost more, but a tiny fraction of today's costs.

Costs weren't so low then (1970s) because they just were, they were low because our country invested in an higher education level for its populace. That is, state and local tax dollars built an educated populace. I paid for college by writing little checks, like at the grocery store, and when I finished college I didn't owe a dime.

When we think about how we came to be the greatest country in the world historians always look right to the role of government investment in higher education.

Contrast that with today, when students are literally viewed as consumers to be milked for everything that can be gotten from them. When soldiers who enlist for 6 years to get education benefits get out and discover they've been lied to, that what they do get won't pay for a degree. When going badly in debt for a degree carries a real risk of long-term financial disaster. A degree used to be available to any energetic, hopeful person willing to sacrifice his free time for it.

State Jobs To Be Created By Obamacare?Jan 14, 2013
A friend of mine, who used to be a low-level manager for a big hospital system, talked with someone recently who expected that our state (and presumably others) would have to hire a lot of people for jobs related to admin/support of Obamacare.  Does anyone have a CLUE what education/qualifications might be relevant?  I'm vaguely thinking coding/billing might be part of the mix, but mostly I'm just totally drawing a blank.  Accounting?  IT?  Anyone feel like yo ...

When Were Superdelegates Created?Feb 15, 2016
I don't know when superdelegates got to be legal or in elections. From the time I was in high school way, way back, there were no such things. Are they legal. If you ask me, we are letting the elections be manipulated by just the elite or certain people instead of the whole country. I think we should abolish the electoral college, superpacks, superdelegates and get back to a popular vote. That is the only way that the elections are not bought and paid for by anyone. It is time th ...

'Job-killing' Obamacare Actually CreatedApr 19, 2017
"The anti-Obamacare crowd has been trying to torture job statistics almost from the inception to try to justify their job-killer meme. As part of their campaign, they’ve claimed that the law has pushed more Americans into part-time work, since the mandate requiring employers to provide employees with coverage won’t apply to part-timers.  Right-wing billionaire Charles Koch floated this claim via USA Today in 2014 and Andy Puzder, the CEO of the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee&r ...

Anybody See The Article On The National Debt?Jan 17, 2011
$14T and growing at a rate of $4 billion a day! Isn't that just ducky! The government borrows 41 cents for every dollar it spends and we, the people,  every man, woman, and child, equals $45,300. I'm so glad my 3-yo grandson will have a good life. Has the TARP money been applied to this debt? I didn't see anything in any article on that. What to do? Raising the debt ceiling will keep us "solvent" for a little while, but what happens when that limit is reached? Will they rais ...

WikiLeaks - The MSM And National SecurityJul 27, 2010
By Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 27, 2010; 10:03 AM Question of the day: Should the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel have done it? Should they have collaborated with the organization known as WikiLeaks in publicizing 92,000 pages of secret documents about the war in Afghanistan? The White House wasted no time in denouncing the leaks as "irresponsible." The news organizations can argue, above all, that these documents provide vital information about ...

How About A National Obamacare Waiver?Mar 25, 2017
nearly 20 percent of exemptions from Pelosi's crowning health care achievement were doled out in her backyard. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's home state—received a partial statewide Obamacare waiver, too. If you're keeping score, Reid was Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate fighting to get Obamacare passed into law. Now his state will be one of three to get a waiver from the law's requirements, while the rest of America suffers. Why did Nevada get a waiver? ...

Regarding Heated Debate Blow Over National DebtMar 07, 2010
I would like to lend a little perspective to the great debate below regarding national debt under Obama and Bush.  By October 2008, due to increases in domestic and foreign spending, the national debt had risen to $11.3 trillion, an increase of over 100% from the start of the year 2000 when the debt was $5.6 trillion.  This is an averge rise of 12.5% per year.  The debt was $12.3 on Feb 5, 2010 which would roughly represent one year under the Obama administration.  That wou ...
