A True Story...

Posted: Jul 18, 2012

In the early 70s, I was a new wife and mother without a lot of money, living in a small mid-western town of 1200.  One day a well-meaning friend called me and said,"The Government is giving away free cheese at the Auditorium. You should go stand in line and get some." I said to her, "Why should I go stand in line for the free cheese?  I don't want a 5 lb. brick of cheese." She replied, "Everyone is doing it."  So, I went and stood in line for the free cheese.  But, really, was the cheese free?  No. My taxes paid for the cheese.

My point is - those were my tax dollars paying for the Government cheese to be handed out to people that didn't need it.  When the Government spends other people's money - our money - they don't care how it is spent...it isn't their money.

According to www.theccpp.org "the Government cannot identify how many Government programs exist, much less whether they are working."  But, according to Forbes, there are 185 Federal Means tested welfare programs.   Among those are: WIC, CHIPs, Summer Food Service Program for Children, Commodity Supplemental Food Program {my cheese!}, Rural Rental Assistance Home Investment Parnership, Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids, Shelter Plus Care Program, Home Ownership and Opportunity for People Everywhere program called HOPE, Food Stamps {$36 Billion spent in 2008 and $75 Billion was projected for 2011}, and many more programs.

President Lyndon Johnson implemented the War on Poverty in 1965.  What has been accomplished?  Things have to change.  All of these Government programs aren't working.  More and more people have become dependent on the Government.  Last week, Obama gutted the Welfare Bill with an EXECUTIVE ORDER!  In this bill,  it is now OK for people on welfare to stay home and among other things write in their journal all day!  So, now we have to pay for people on welfare to stay home and write in their journals.  REALLY!!!  And he has the nerve to tell us that "you didn't build that...somebody else made that happen."

Things have to change.  Our taxes keep going up and up to fund programs that aren't working, Obama has made things worse and continues to make them worse, and he is going to be out of a job this coming November.

Thank you for your time.

Welfare cheese! - Zville MT

[ In Reply To ..]
That's what my grandma called it, anyway. I'm not sure how she got it (I know she wasn't on welfare, but she was on SS, so maybe they gave it to them, too). She would take it, but she would never use it - she always gave it to us. My dad would say why not, his taxpayer dollars paid for it. I didn't understand that when I was a kid - my grandparents had plenty of money, why did they need a freebie?

What you're saying about all of the goverment programs is all true - the war on poverty has been about as effective as the war on drugs. All the money thrown at it has done nothing but make more people dependent on the government. I pray you're right about Obama being out of a job in November.

BTW, I like the way you close with "thank you" every time :)

There is way too much abuse and way too little oversight with entitlement programs. Our government has yet to run anything successfully without wasting our money. Over and over again they have proven that under both republicans and democrats. I truly would like to fire them all and start from scratch.

We have become a country that ridicules and envies success. We have become so divisive and unwilling to compromise that we can't even begin to fix our problems. It is truly scary and sad the road that we are heading down.

United we stand and divided we fall...and my friend...we are falling!

Corporate Cheese, Kraft anyone? - Time Traveler

[ In Reply To ..]
Nice story, interesting interpretation. Did you ever wonder why they gave CHEESE to the low income people (and anyone who got in line--even people who did not need it)? Could it be that corporations were buying the politcal system to meet their ends?

The rest of the story to my recollection: There was a surplus of dairy products. Remember when there were all those beautiful little farmsteads dotting the countrysides and the farming community supported the little towns? Well, in the 60s and 70s there came a push on the small farmer to upgrade to grade A milk. Grade "B" milk was used to make cheese and other products. The prices of grade B milk dropped so low that there was a huge surplus so the government stepped in to support the small farmers transitioning to grade A and the small farmers getting out of business. I am not sure of the exact reasons for the sudden rise in corporate farms (you might want to check with Tyson, Con-Agra, Kraft, etc).

Well, this is just a little back information to your spin. By the way, President Obama was about 5 years old, if even born at this time. A plot conceived in the womb, I am sure.

Hello there,
I, unfortunately, don't remember your reference to the milk upgrades in the 60s and 70s. I do know that the reason there was surplus cheese is the Government was buying out Dairy farmers to control productivity and prices. I think the reason for corporate farms was related to the Government paying farmers to get out of the Dairy Business, but I could be wrong. I will try to check out your references to Tyson, Con-Agra, etc.

I don't like the Government paying people to be unproductive as in forcing dairy farmers to sell their herds...it just creates more dependence on the Government.

Thank you.

Anyone with money (product/service) has been trying to gain favor with those in power since the beginning of time. The goal is to be vigilant and stop the practice. Start by getting rid of Citizens United, eh?

The Corporate Cheese stands alone - Now think about it

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would "the government" just decide to implement a policy that changed the family farm forever? I don't think "the government" (who is that, by the way?) woke up one morning and said "let's get rid of family farms by subsidizing cheese producers." That just doesn't make sense, does it? I don't know if you can find out the corporate links after all this time, but be assured, they are there. Just like the people who think war is an economic stimulus (for who? Halliburton?) Lets put the money into education and the health of OUR country (not the Cayman Islands). We should not be protecting the status quo of corporate contributions to political leaders for greed and profit (Citzens United). Thank you for the example of the cheese giveaway. You can see the repercussions in our lifetime, which reminds me,have you seen the price of grains lately? Food is going to get very expensive. Global warming impact is coming.

I don't know what that says about a - person who would (s/m)

take something being given away when it's something they neither need nor want. And you think OTHERS are the ones who always have their hands out?

It's like the staunch conservatives I know (and I know a LOT of them, living in one of the reddest states in the union...almost all of my hubby's family and our acquaintances are Republicans) who say, "Heck yeah, I'm getting all the unemployment money I can get....I paid for it!" I was laid off and offered a job with the outsourcing MTSO that my hospital was going to use. I found out that I COULD have gone on unemployment because the pay with the MTSO was nowhere near comparable to what I had been making at the hospital. I have a husband who works, and although we aren't rolling in the dough, we manage to keep our heads above water. I didn't feel it was right to take an unemployment check when it would take away from funds for single mothers, sole supporters, or households where BOTH spouses were unemployed. Every one of my conservative friends told me: "You SHOULD take advantage of that....I would!" I guess that makes me stupid, but my conscience just wouldn't let me do it.

To: I Don't Know - Liberty

You are absolutely correct...if I could take back that day in the early 70s, I never would have accepted that cheese. I have never done anything like that since that day in the early 70s. When we fell on even harder times after that, I never accepted another hand-out.

And, please tell me, you said I think others are the ones with their hands out? When did I say that? However, the Government has it's big hand out... yah, this includes Obama... raising my taxes to put more money into welfare programs that don't work. I hope this clarified my point.

And, that is too bad about your Republican family and friends saying, "Heck yeah, I'm getting all the unemployment money I can get...I paid for it." My Republican family and my Republican friends aren't anything like that. But then it could be because we are Conservative and not just Republicans. We do have a name for Republicans like your aquaintances - RHINOS...Republicans in Name Only.

You have a good day and I hope all continues to go good for you and your husband. We are in tough times right now too, but we just keep pushing on like you.

Thank you.

being given away when it's something they neither need nor want...does this include those people who took their Bush tax cut even though they didn't agree with it and didn't need nor want it? Just curious.

Also, your comment about republicans taking unemployment...I'm sure there are those out there who are using up their unemployment. Obama kinda made that easier since him and his buddies kept extending unemployment but thanks for pointing out a GREAT example of why that shouldn't have been extended. Also, I find it rather ridiculous that you suggest only republicans are doing that. I'd be interested to know some stats on that because I'm sure there are a lot of registered democrats who are doing the same thing. Not that it makes it right, but I get so tired of people generalizing a group of people because of the actions of a some when their own group has some who are doing the same thing.

Thats funny. All the people I know milking - unemployment checks are libs. nm
