45% of US citizens pay no federal income tax

Posted: Apr 19, 2016

Is that the same 45% that support Bernie Sanders?

I doubt it: combined incomes husband and myself 37,000 - No$

and we still ended up owing 400 dollars between state and federal - and have to pay over 200 dollars a month for a health plan which basically covers only 'catastrophic' events. We do not have enough most times to even pay our immediate cost of living week to week, and have had to beg off relatives for a little help. We do not live above our means, and have no credit due to 2008 crashing, jobs going overseas, and when gas prices first started going up (4.50 or so here) all other prices sky rocketed, such as food and utilities. Since gas has gone down to about 2.20 here now, all other prices are still soaring. ?

It would seem we are the only class paying any taxes or working hard at all.

Also, we are in a HUGE red pocket area and there are 'castle' size house being built every single spot of empty land there is available - and shacks right across the street or next to them.

This is reality for so many people, if you would just stop and look around, get out of your environment perhaps. Look at how the other side lives...

So many stories lately too of people helping others (by choice) with gofundme or whatever, so people now have to beg rather than have decent jobs. How many people do NOT get chosen to be funded or to get help -

Since 24% are under 18 and 15% are over 65 and 1% - I am not surprised

Since 39% do not earn enough and the 1% has lawyers to find the tax loopholes and don't pay anything on their millions that is not exactly shocking.

Probably. - SM

They want to keep getting their freebies!

you mean like corporate welfare or tax loopholes for the wealthiest - No$

businesses shipping business overseas, storing millions in other countries, paying no taxes which support roads and programs that could help fellow Americans (if you do well, why not send the elevator back down?), and then with the trade acts, can sell their products overseas, that are made overseas, because they can't sell them here because jobs are rapidly going overseas and people cannot afford them.

May I ask where you get your educated opinion that you think poor or lower middle class people have it so great and living some life of pure luxury. Maybe I would change my mind or see things on your side, but for now, seeing only propaganda put out by churches/big business.

I hear more people say things like that, as they at the same time are living off the government either with Medicare or Social Security, or armed service benefits, or off their spouses or children -

SEND THE ELEVATOR BACK DOWN - there Is more than enough for everyone.

Not asking for welfare or freebies, just a LEG UP, which is even just a tiny minuscule of what wealthy people get.

Yup as Sanders supports are the epitome of the gimme gimme brigade. - anon

20% pay the taxes - 40% collect from the government

[ In Reply To ..]
Despite the fact that rich people paying little in the way of income taxes makes plenty of headlines, this is the exception to the rule: The top 1% of taxpayers pay a higher effective income-tax rate than any other group (around 23%, according to a report released by the Tax Policy Center in 2014) — nearly seven times higher than those in the bottom 50%.

On average, those in the bottom 40% of the income spectrum end up getting money from the government. Meanwhile, the richest 20% of Americans, by far, pay the most in income taxes, forking over nearly 87% of all the income tax collected by Uncle Sam.

That 45% number includes children, seniors and the disabled. - nm

45% of "Households" not people - did you even read it?

[ In Reply To ..]
If it doesn't fit the Bernie narrative, people don't want to know about it. The tax increases that Bernie is going to have to have to fund everything he wants to give away will be on the middle class - those in the $50,000 to $200.000 a year income - we are far below $200,000 at our house, but we do squeak into that range of being "middle class" and I don't know about you, but I already pay alot of federal income tax.

Hmm, where are you getting your Bernie.... - sm

Sanders tax info? I am seeing where the middle class, as small as it might be, will benefit the most from the Sanders plan. That includes small businesses who will no longer have to compete with mega corporations who offer health care. Healthcare will be portable all across America, and middle class families will save the most out of pocket.
and there will be a rainbow in every backyard. - ....

We are having to cut down spending.  I lost my job due to an injury and my husband makes 12 an hour (I was the main provider making twice that).  We are having to eliminate things and limit our spending, which has not been fun, but we have managed.  It is now getting down to crunch time though, where other things will have to be eliminated.  I already count all my pennies at the grocery store and fly into a panic when it goes over a little over budget, and keep my eyes glued ...

International Monetary Fund: Income Inequality Is Bad For Economic Growth.Nov 03, 2012
Income Inequality May Take Toll on Growth By ANNIE LOWREY WASHINGTON — Income inequality has soared to the highest levels since the Great Depression, and the recession has done little to reverse the trend, with the top 1 percent of earners taking 93 percent of the income gains in the first full year of the recovery. The yawning gap between the haves and the have-nots — and the political questions that gap has raised about the plight of the middle ...
