2-year-old Kentucky girl accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother

Posted: May 1, 2013

"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home.;

A 5yo has a rifle? A 5-YO HAS A RIFLE AS A GIFT? OMG - That poor family.

Why is it okay to use a child in an advertisement for a gun, but not okay for other adult products?

So sad. - sm

I can't imagine the horror that family is going through right now. Giving a rifle to a 5-year-old is unfathomable to me...how many of us don't want our children playing with dangerous toys that may contain lead, have sharp edges, etc? To hand a child a rifle is unimaginable. I cannot understand it, at all.

imagine the poor little boy - heartbreaking...sm

He probably loved his little sister. How will he cope with this? It's a tragedy all around. Even though it's not for me, I believe it's a family's prerogative if they wish to teach their child about guns and shooting. Nevertheless, even a 16-year-old has to ask for keys to the car before he uses it. It's unfortunately mind-boggling how easily this accident could have been prevented. I feel for the family. It's a terrible tragedy.

I'm sure the NRA is proud! - nm

It was a legal gun and no one is being charged - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
It is NOT that common. The media is now making a big deal out of every accident using a gun because of Sandy Hook. Before Sandy Hook, you wouldn't have heard a word about this accident except locally.

You may not like it, but there are a lot of states that allow kids to have guns. It's a way of life in those states, mostly used for hunting purposes.

"The child safety lock was in place and operational, White said. Officials believe a shell had been left in the weapon from the last use and no one realized it.

“In my fifteen years as coroner, this is the first such case,” he said. “It is very, very rare.”

It is legal in Kentucky to give a child a rifle as a gift, White said. Nor is it unusual for children to have rifles, often passed down from their parents, he said.

Right. It's the media's fault. - and it's not that common...

[ In Reply To ..]
So because it doesn't happen every day, it's not a problem or what?

These incidents have been reported in the media before Sandy Hook, so I don't know why you're even saying that. And why does it matter, anyway?

The family "may not like it," but their child is gone now and is not coming back. Their 5-year-old is probably traumatized for life.

They are idiots who left a bullet in a gun and handed it to a 5-year-old. These are the kind of people who own guns. Anyone who refuses to see the problem here because they are too lost in their own political agenda is not even worth engaging in conversation, IMO.

just want to weigh in on this... - heartbreaking...sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I think the kind of people who own guns are, by and large, responsible with their weapons and respectful of their communities. This family made a terrible mistake, but I don't believe their behavior can be attributed to all gun owners.

I am in favor of gun control, but I am not anti-gun, and I would like to think that even card-carrying NRA members would be in favor of firmer legislation and penalties for parents who fail to protect their children from home-based gun danger.

It seems to me like this is one area where both sides of the argument can come together.
You would think so, but don't count on it. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter that both sides can agree children should be kept safe, the NRA has spoken and any legislation that tries to prevent these things from happening is going to be filibustered by the NRA-bought idiots.

At least 90% of Americans are AGAINST how the Republicans voted, but Congress' loyalty is to the NRA and the money they receive from gun lobbyists.

In a Congress that's more than willing to remove the only source of food for seniors (Meals on Wheels) and whose sequester results in turning away cancer patients. Yet, they can fix the air traffic controllers and the airports for those with money who fly.

It's absolutely heartless and demonic how those in Congress are willing to starve people, deny them treatment for cancer, etc., etc., etc., just as long as the rich keep getting richer (7-some percent so far this year) and the least among us will starve to death or just die a painful, possibly unnecessary death by turning away patients.

I don't know about you, but THIS America is a place I don't recognize any more, and its callous and blatant preference for the rich shames me.
You responded to my post, but I believe we're on the - same page

Also, to expound on the air traffic controllers, Congress flies frequently. They were getting ready to leave DC right after that vote was taken. Coincidence? How nice it must be to be able to legislate one's own personal comfort and convenience.

You are spot on on everything you posted.
Both sides of the argument SHOULD come - sm

But we have every Republican in Congress who refuses to even begin to compromise with this President, they hate him so much, and I believe every one of them should be impeached or recalled.

Everybody in my family/extended family owns long guns . . . several actually. let's see . . . DIL is an APN, daughter working on her BS in nursing, 1 son owns an insurance agency, another son is VP of his company, cousin owns his own security analysis company, niece is a collegiate trainer in the Bronx . . . what a pack of IDIOTS!

I realize that - heartbreaking...sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I remarked above that I think it's a family's prerogative if they wish to instruct their kids in guns and hunting. I fully recognize that guns are widely used by all kinds of families all over the U.S.

The fact remains, it is a tragedy that could have easily been prevented - and would have been prevented - if an adult checked the gun for bullets. I too read that the safety lock was in place, so it's a little hard for me to understand how it fired.

As for the media, they always tend to "make a big deal" when children shoot each other in tragic accidents. I don't think this is a new phenomenon.

This was a needless, totally preventable tragedy. I can't imagine you would disagree with that, or the fact that parents are responsible for their kids.

The lock wasn't in place, the kid's dead, but it's only one - rare life...all's well

Senator. They can't be very bright.

To give a 5-year-old a gun, marketed as "my first" gun is absolutely insane.

Two days ago, I told my best friend (a male in a platonic relationship with me)that I would really like to go on a road trip this summer, but I wasn't sure where I wanted to go.

I know where I DON'T want to go: states like Kentucky, Texas, and predominantly the south where people vote for heartless, cold-hearted people (like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, etc., etc., etc.)

It just so happens that my friend is white, and we might be treated favorably (unless people look for wedding rings), but I can't help but wonder what kind of reception we might experience if my friend would be black instead. Either way, I want no part of them.

I realize that limits my options, but, truly, I just don't want to be around people like that. I want to have a nice trip.

Hate, table for one. Hate, table for one, your table is ready - Your post is wrong on so many counts - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Reading your post is one of those rare times that the hair on my neck stands up. The hatefulness and spite that exudes from this makes my heart sink to know people actually think what you just wrote. Looks like someone needs to be set straight on some of your points.

1. The people who vote for Mitch McConnell are no worse than the people who vote for Pelosi, Reid, and Obama. I will go by your same logic and state that people who vote for them can't be very bright (p.s. Mitch McConnell didn't shoot this little girl).

2. I would never give a child a gun as a gift, however, these people live in a state where they probably depend on hunting to provide their food. About 8 years ago I did know a co-worker and her husband who had moved from Kentucky and he would tell us about what life was like growing up. As a young boy he and his dad would go hunting because that is how they ate. They didn't kill more than they could eat, but they were poor and that was their way of life. His dad was always there and gun safety was always #1 top rule.

3. You're statement about not wanting to go to Kentucky, Texas and the south "where people vote for heartless, cold-hearted people (like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, etc)", has got to be the most cold-hearted and one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard and falls right into that "can't be very bright" category. First, not everyone in those states voted for a republican. Second I find the people of Kentucky and Texas and the south to be the most heart-warming, loving, people in the country. Third, those republicans you named are not "cold-hearted". They are people who were voted in by people just like you vote for people you feel best represent you. Don't know about Ted Cruz, but Rand Paul, Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan are wonderful human beings who truly care about the country and are doing their best to try to make life better for all citizens. You want to start naming cold-hearted that would be Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Clinton to name just a few.

Since you know nothing about people from Kentucky and the south, I'll fill you in. Yes, there are black people who live their too. They are treated the same as white people. They are freindly and loving and they could care less what the color of your skin is or if you are wearing wedding rings. This is the year 2013 now and believe it or not, they do live in current times. Psssst...they even have indoor plumbing in the south too.

It is best you don't go to those areas on vacation (that is best for the people who live there) I'm sure they will be relieved not to have to be around someone filled with such anger and hate an contempt who professes that anyone who is a republican, (i.e. someone who has voted on issues that have help better their lives and who truly care about the country as a whole and making life better for all citizens no matter what political party they belong to) as "cold-hearted", I'm sure they will not miss that.

Since I know you will not be there, I believe I will now plan a trip specifically to one of those areas. Knowing you will not be there I will have a wonderful time and enjoy the beauty of their states, heart-warming and kind loving nature of the people. By the way, I am of mixed race and my husband is a person of color and we have no problems there. Unlike places like Seattle and San Francisco which surprisingly we usually get the strange looks and whispers behind our back. Big cities does not equal sophistication.

Funny after watching Jesus of Nazareth earlier today and feeling very upbeat through the day and then reading your post tonight I find the contrast of what a loving person he was to reading this, which goes against everything he was for and against everything that is good in this country.
You're mixed race, husband a person of color, and you agree - w/Rand Paul's civir rights

priority list of things I look for in a politician. Heck, I'm not of mixed race it is way up there, as it is a reflection of class and morals, loving thy neighbor, something Jesus of Nazareth advocated.

Rand's view of civil rights, IMO, in no way merits a statement that he is doing his best to make "life better for all citizens."

"PAUL: I like the Civil Rights Act in the sense that it ended discrimination in all public domains, and I'm all in favor of that.

INTERVIEWER: But?

PAUL: You had to ask me the "but." I don't like the idea of telling private business owners—I abhor racism. I think it’s a bad business decision to exclude anybody from your restaurant—but, at the same time, I do believe in private ownership. But I absolutely think there should be no discrimination in anything that gets any public funding, and that's most of what I think the Civil Rights Act was about in my mind."
Wow you sure twisted that into what you want it to be - You link doesn't prove anything - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Nowhere in his statement is he saying business owners should discriminate against black people. YOU EVEN QUOTED HIM "I abhor racism" and its bad to exclude anyone from your restaurant. Can't get any simpler than that. He is not for discriminating against people of color and where in the world you get that from I have no idea. Just because you want something to be true does not mean it is.

So, he believes in private ownership. We all do (well at least those of us who want to see the country prosper), what he is saying is the government should not come in and tell a business owner what to do with their business.

Believe me, if there is racism I'LL be the one to point it out. Here there is none:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20005512-503544/rand-paul-i-support-the-civil-rights-act/

"I have clearly stated in prior interviews that I abhor racial discrimination and would have worked to end segregation," Paul said in the statement. "Even though this matter was settled when I was 2, and no serious people are seeking to revisit it except to score cheap political points, I unequivocally state that I will not support any efforts to repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

I think you might be the twisting one.

"what he is saying is the government should not come in and tell a business owner what to do with their business."

So if a business owner wants to deny admittance to blacks, Cubans, gays, long-hair freaky people, or the guy inspecting for roaches and filth, etc., that's okay?

Certainly he would not support any efforts to repeal the Civil Rights Act, just as he wouldn't challenge the health inspector's right to inspect a business, but he clearly stated his belief system--a belief system that should be rejected by any voter who believes in human equality--in that 2010 interview, and not masked or even able to be twisted. He believes any establishment not publicly funded should be exempt from the Civil Rights Act.

LaPierre would probably say the 2-year-old - should have been armed. nm
