Your thoughts Re: Diabetes

Posted: Aug 15, 2011

My mother has type 2 diabetes (uncontrolled because she is noncompliant. Frown).  I have been experiencing some symptoms that are concerning me and I wondered if I should get tested.  I probably am going to go ahead and call the doctor, but wanted to hear some other thoughts and opinions.

#1 I am always thirsty and seem to always have the munchies.

#2 I have been having intermittent bouts of nausea and sweating/claminess.

#3 Swelling in ankles and feet.

#4 ? of blurry vision.  I am not sure if I am actually having blurry vision or not, but sometimes it seems as though there is a film over my eyes hindering my sight.

Anyway, like I said, I am probably going to get checked either way, but was curious about other's opinions.

Thanks in advance.

I would definitely go, especially with the bouts of nausea and clamminess. I had those symptoms too, but attributed them to the pregnancy. I had gestational diabetes. A year after the delivery, symptoms started again. I was very borderline, but definitely needed help with my diet to figure out how to even it out. My doc is very reluctant to start medication as my cholesterol and A1c have gone down with just changing my diet.

Take care of yourself!

Anon - do go. My dad's only symptoms were blurry vision. - rose

He actually was seeing double and went to his ophthalmologist and his optic nerve was swollen. She told him it was probably diabetes. The sooner you go the better. Blessings on you. This is such a horrible disease because being noncompliant elicits no immediate symptoms, but you will pay for it later in life.

You really need to get checked. - Type 3 diabetic

Those are all symptoms of diabetes, except for maybe the leg swelling which could be high blood pressure or something like that, which goes hand in hand with type 2 diabetes. I have had type 2 diabetes for many years and you need to be on a diabetic diet at least. If your sugar is high enough, you will probably need oral medication. The sooner you get checked the better, so you can start on treatment and hopefully start feeling better quickly. Good luck to you.

Diabetes - No more high blood sugar

I agree that you should get checked. Also, note that high blood sugar often leads to fluid retention.

For me, after spending 20 years as a cooperative diabetic patient, following their diet and taking oral medications, the final thing that worked for me was to just not eat foods high in sugar and complex carbohydrates. This meant, replacing "just 2 servings a day" of foods like bread, potatoes, rice, etc., with maybe 2 servings a week, as a "treat."

Within 2 days of making this change, I no longer needed either glyburide or HCTZ, as my blood pressure also decreased as a result.

Btw, no doctor would have recommended that I follow this regimen. They would much prefer that I stay on their recommended diet and take their drugs.

I have been following my "new" plan for 5 years now. As a "side effect", I have lost over 150 pounds as well.

Best to you.

Way to GO! - oaf

I've been diabetic for 15 years and I too have been following "their rules". I had to start insulin and I hate it! Your solution makes so much sense and sounds so simple - I am going to go on the no sugar and low-carb approach! You have inspired me. Thanks

Foregoing sugar is good for everyone but I know of one doctor who cures his patients with diabetes using starchy/carb foods. Carbs aren't the bad guy if they are unprocessed. Whole wheat bread, brown rice and potatoes are never a problem for my husband. It's when you add the butter and jelly to the bread and gravy, butter and sour cream to the potatotes that cause the problem. My husband's lost weight and his blood sugar is NEVER over 120 and he eats carbs...the good ones. Why sacrifice when you don't have to and especially give up carbs that are good for you? If you give up potatoes and rice, you might as well give up all fruit (which is good for you) and some vegetables. The sugar in potatoes is the same sugar in an apple. It makes no sense. But to each his/her own.

Hello all.  I have been an MT for 20 plus years, yet not being a doctor, I can't seem to put a finger on what may be going on with me, but I do have some ideas.  Ten years ago I had a bowel resection for an obstruction and have since developed 4 massive incisional hernia in my abdomen.  They don't hurt, but occasionally flareup and change and it sends me to the ER everytime because Im afraid they may have gotten incarcerated.  Over the past 6 months I have noticed t ...

Diabetes And InsulinAug 05, 2012
I've had type 2 diabetes for around 20 years and have been moderately controlled on pills - eventually reaching the maximum daily doses of metformin and glyburide. Over the past few months, the numbers have been creeping up, and my doctor wanted to add a third drug. I've opted to start on long-acting insulin (Levemir), since I think insulin is actually healthier for the body than the pills. On the day I started the insulin, a week-and-a-half ago, my glucose was only 103 (very unus ...

Type2 Diabetes QuestionJun 13, 2010
My sister was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and asked me if I could help with meals/menu ideas, etc.  She stopped sodas, milk products, is drinking more water, and has already lost 8 pounds in an effort to get her weight down (she's current at 220), but asked if I could find some info for her on nutrition.  She went to the website for diabetes (ADA?) but was very confused and overwhelmed.  Does anyone have any suggestions or know of websites that are easy to understand. ...

Newly Diagnosed With Diabetes And Question AboutFeb 11, 2015
Spoke to the doctor's PA yesterday.  Had to stop taking metformin as it made my ankles and feet swell.  So they have given me glipizide.  He told me to make sure I eat 30 minutes after taking the medication.  Two questions: 1.  Does it have to be 30 minutes or can I eat sooner if I want.  I'm not a breakfast person and a lot of times I forget to eat, so was wondering if I can take the medication then fix myself something and eat it then or do I have to wa ...

There are actually two things in this article.  I am a believer in the second ammendment and a democrat.  However, I also believe there are people out there who should not own guns.  Perhaps this bill was vague (I haven't seen the actual bill), but I do believe people with severe mental illness with violence tendencies should not own guns. The other issue is the last paragraph:  "The goal of the rule was to minimize coal mine pollutants in waterways and would have requ ...

Some Conservative ThoughtsOct 22, 2009
If a conservative doesn’t like a news organization or a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.  If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.  A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.  If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.  If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.  If a ...

Some Liberal Thoughts Oct 25, 2009
If a conservative doesn’t like a news organization or a talk show host, he goes on multiple chat boards and blogs and does everything he can to discredit them. Liberals just don't invite them in.  If a conservative decides he needs health care coverage, it is after he has taken advantage of the system by not carrying it; making payments to healthcare providers who are not in the business of lending money, and sometimes he has filed bankruptcy.  A liberal recognizes that eve ...

Election Day Thoughts ...Nov 02, 2010
I used to vote for who I wanted in office because we had credible, responsible candidates - promising, at the least.  Now I vote to keep out the lesser of the evils. All that aside, my thoughts for the whole nation on any election day: 1.  May we all vote in peace, without threat or harm or intereference. 2.  May all who are able to vote soberly cast their vote. 3.  May we be able to pull together and get behind those who prevail and make the best of the process, regardle ...

Some Thoughts About This Board, Etc. Mar 18, 2012
I respect everyone’s right to their opinions.    We have a 2-party system in this country, thankfully, although  at times I wish it were more, and if we all thought the same, or weren’t allowed to disagree, we would probably not be living in a democracy.    This is my issue.   When I hear, for example, some conspiracy theory on how Obama’s (or it could be anyone) agenda is to ruin the country, turn it into a socialist state  (wh ...

Just heard prediction there could be as many as 21 Republican candidates.  I wonder how bad they are going to tear into one another.  This has, in the past, made it very difficult for the candidate to recover from some of the accusations.  Of course, depends on the accusation. On the other side, Democrats, with 2, not as certain there will be more.  I think Sanders will argue on the issues.  I think Clinton will give thought to the those issues/accusations and answer.&n ...
