May be having a TAH-have a question

Posted: Jun 23, 2011

Due to huge fibroids, bilateral ovarian cysts, and a myriad of symptoms, I've been told I need a TAH.  Doctor tells me I'll be out of work 6 weeks but as I'm an MT and just sit at my desk anyway, I don't see a 6-week absence as being necessary.  Has anyone here had a TAH as an MT or with a desk job and how long was it necessary for you to be off work?

I did... you dont need 6 weeks for sure - sm

I am not a pain pill type of person, so after surgery, the only medicine I would take is regular Tylenol. I came home the day after (they wanted me to stay an extra day but refused). I had surgery on a Thursday morning. Came home Friday afternoon. Worked on Monday, however, I split my shift all up the first week. I told my boss I needed to work, but was unsure how I would do, and he said work when you want, so I probably did about 30 hours that week. The next week, back to regular schedule.

We sit for a living. Doesnt matter if your sitting in a recliner taking it easy or sitting in the desk chair working.

I also used a bungee strap attached to my laundry baskets to take them up and down the stairs cause it hurt to carry them, but I did not have help at home, so did what I had to do.

Hope all goes well... I am so glad that I had mine!

It might help - SM

to specify if you had a vaginal hyst, lap assisted, or open. If you had an open, seriously kudos to you, there is no way I could have taken nothing but Tylenol starting the first day postop. I was happy I was up walking!

the question is whether you are having an open abdominal TAH or a vaginal TAH. I had an open hysterectomy, although because of my age, they left in my left ovary but other than that, I had everything else removed for severe endometriosis. I worked in an office at that time as director of medical documentation and it required walking back and forth between three building when I was not working at my desk and driving. I was out for six weeks. Had I been doing straight transcription from home, not having to drive and not having to walk around a lot, I probably would have been able to start typing again after two weeks part time and three weeks full time. Another person I worked with had a vaginal hysterectomy right before I had mine and she was back to work in five weeks. From what I understand the vaginal hysterectomies are much easier to recover from. With the open abdominal hysterectomy, they cut you across the bottom of your stomach between your hips to remove everything, so being opened up like that, it takes a couple of weeks to be sitting at a desk and working again, especially using a foot pedal.

Did you tell your doctor what you do and that you work at home? Good luck with your procedure. It was the best thing I ever did. Of course with the severe endometriosis, I had to take hydrocodone for my menstrual cramps they were so disabling and usually had symptoms three out of four weeks. Some days, I would curl up in the fetal position even with the pain meds.

At the time of my surgery I had a desk job doing care plans in a nursing home, which also required a lot of walking back and fourth between five separate units and carrying heavy patient charts and going to meetings left and right. None of those meetings ever accomplished anything, but had to be done and required walking to and from. I had a laparoscopic assisted total and was really hurting afterwards. I had four small abdominal openings and one became infected and required weekly visits to the doctor. Had that not happened and if I had not had to do all that walking back and forth to the units for charts and meetings, I think I could have been able to go back after 3-4 weeks. I took six weeks because my doc insisted on six weeks without exception. My then employer wanted me back the next week and said they would fetch patient charts and stuff for me. But, quite frankly, they weren't very good at keeping their word about anything else, so I had no real reason to trust them for that. I needed my pain medication and I don't know how well I would have been able to focus on MT work if I had been doing it then while taking it. I certainly hope your procedure goes well. It was liberating for me and am so glad I had mine. God Bless.

I work from home, have my own contracts, and took about one week totally off. I was in the hospital for 4 of those days. The second week I SHOULD have taken totally off, but I worked for one of my picky doctors offices about a couple hours a day. There were days where I could work 15 minutes and then had to go lay down. The next 2 weeks, I was able to work part-time "ish." I really don't think I could have worked an 8 hour shift in my chair the whole time, but I was working about 6 hours day those days, split up.

If you are having an open abdominal depending on what all is involved and any coexisting conditions, you could be in the hospital several days. I would expect you'll be able to work, if you have to the next week some. But seriously, there is no way if you have an open abdominal that after a week you are going to be able to sit at your desk for 8 hours straight without being miserable.

So, what it comes down to I think is how is your work distributed? Can you take "less" work so you have half a workload for weeks 3 and 4? Do you have to sit at your desk for X hours or do you just have to meet a certain deadline? I think you'll be able to work sooner if you are working on a 24 hr TAT then if you are working on an butt in chair for X hours.

That I agree with the above posters in that it was one of the best things I ever did, despite the filleted open like a fish part. As I recovered I literally was astounded that I didn't have abdominal pain all the time from the cysts, adenomyosis, etc. until that pain stopped, I never realized how much it was affecting me. It wasn't a horrible miserable recovery, I just don't want you to have this rosy picture if you are having it open that all will be well in a few days and you'll be your normal perky self working 8 hour days and smiling. I do believe you'll be perkier than your normal self in 8 weeks though!

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
