Extreme fear if bridges

Posted: Jan 25, 2011

I have an extreme fear of bridges which keeps me from venturing anywhere there's a bridge.  Even freeway overpasses affect me in a similar manner.   Others either laugh or get annoyed with me, but I'd give anything to not feel this way, to just be like everyone else.   Does anyone have this problem?

I too have a fear of bridges. Unfortunately, I live where Illinios, Missouri and Iowa meet (about 5 miles from the Mississippi) so I have no choice but to cross it on a pretty regular basis. The bridge I have to cross is a swing-span bridge which means when there is barge traffic, the bridge swings open to let them through which leaves you sitting on there while it opens and closes which can be at least 15 minutes if not longer. Even after all of the years living here, my heart still beats fast and I get really anxious when I cross the bridge, especially if I get caught on it for a barge. I have a recurring dream that the bridge collapses and I end up in the river; I have had this dream for years and more often than I can count. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone, I can totally relate!

I have been afraid of bridges for as long as I can remember but only high ones. It is really a fear of height more than bridges, but a lot of bridges are really high up. I live near the Bay Bridge and can not drive over it, I can't even keep my eyes open and usually you have to pry the toll out of my fingers if I am holding it for the driver. I also have extreme claustrophobia, both to the point that if I am watching a movie that has people is tight spots, such as those cave movies or height places, I start to hyperventilate. So, no you are not alone.

of driving over it. Even as a passenger, it was tough. My mother moved near Rehobeth Beach, which was over this bridge, and she got cancer. At this point, I had to drive over that bridge frequently. This is what I did. I stayed in the far right lane (3 lanes) so I did not have the extra pressure of faster drivers in the far left lane and also avoided cars on both sides of me in the middle lane. I started singing one of my favorite rock songs as I crossed. I kept my eyes straight ahead, did not look to the right at the water. I took deep breaths as I headed to the high point of the bridge. I almost put myself into a "trance" with the singing, not letting my mind wander to where I really was. This actually worked for me. If you have a favorite CD, maybe you could have that ready to play and try singing along. :) Hope this helps.

Extreme Fatigue SmAug 24, 2011
Does anyone else suffer from extreme fatigue?  I'm so tired I can't even type.  Just walking a few steps is tiring.   Some days are better than others.  I have a hard time lifting my legs to get into my truck or into bed.  I do have hypothyroidism.  I'm overweight but can't seem to lose any weight.  My metabolism is pratically nil.  Now my doctor has put the depression tag on me so I'm basically screwed about having anyth ...

HELP - Extreme Light SensitivyJan 18, 2012
I need to find a remedy and fast.  I've got too much work to deal with this.  I have such extreme light sensitivity.  I'm typing with both eyes squinted almost shut.  One iI hold closed the other one all I'm seeing is a little bit.  The light is so bad.  What I'm typing looks blurry so I type then shut my eyes a few seconds open and try and read a sentence at a time.  This is no way going to work.  I put a warm compress on my eyes every ...

Anyone See That New TLC Show Extreme Couponing?Jan 05, 2011
I only saw one episode and am addicted. It's insane! For those of you who have not seen it, this show follows 4 people who are considered extreme couponers.  These people spend hours and hours finding and cutting out coupons to save money. It shows how many items they bought, what they bought, what their original bill would be, and how much they actually paid after their coupons. They have a system down, very organized almost to the point of OCD. They showed their stacks upon stacks of ...

Extreme Fatigue (worse Than Normal) Any Ideas?Mar 05, 2013
I know it is the most common complaint doctors hear - and for years I have had the stressed-tired-overworked fatigue - I know how that one feels.  But this has been going on a couple of months.  I am bone tired even after I sleep a lot.  My blood work showed I am hypothyroid so I started on medicine and also some supplements for that.  But nothing seems to be helping.  I have pain/fatigue across the area of my back right at the braline.  My arms and neck feel heavy. ...

Extreme Weather At All Time Lows As Climax Hoax Apr 29, 2017
The Church of Global Warming has many followers and, because it’s a cult-like religious belief to them, no amount of hard data will ever convince them they adhere to the teachings of a false god. Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon the non-establishment, honest alternative media to report what is and what isn’t: And what isn’t is the supposed increase in “extreme weather” due to “global warming/climate change” caused by humans. Climate Depot points this out in a new report tha ...

LDB's Biggest FearJul 07, 2011
If you will recall, Ms. Burdick's greatest fear was "common sense being lost."  That's exactly what happened.  I just heard a woman who was protesting outside the courthouse and she summed up what I feel completely.  She said that jurors should be instructed strongly on using common sense, and not just looking for reasonable doubt.  I know this was mentioned during closing arguments, but it went out the window.  I feel this jury failed us.  If common ...
