DeQuervain's versus rheumatoid arthritis

Posted: Jun 28, 2012

A good friend of mine believes she has DeQuervain syndrome or it could possibly be also rheumatoid arthritis but more likely DeQuervan.  She has made an appointment to see a rheumatologist but can't in until August.  She has her wrists tightly bounf with adhesive tape and it feels a little better.  Has anybody ever that this and what did you do for it?

I had DeQuervain's - ....and this is how I was treated (SM)

I had DeQuervain tendinitis from overuse of the toggle motion of Tab+Alt keys to go back and forth between screens. Had it in that left wrist/thumb area. My manager had me go to the occupational health doc, and he did cortisone injections on 2 occasions and had me wear an immobilizing splint for a while. Can't remember how long, but it eventually went away. Seems like he also had me take Aleve (or maybe Advil) during that time, too. At any rate, no surgery, not even any physical therapy....just cortisone and resting that movement.

I had to develop a new habit of using a different finger for that keystroke combo, to give my thumb a rest. Every once in a while, I can feel that familiar ache start up again, and I have to be careful to stop whatever repetitive motion is causing it.

My pain was mostly right at the very base of the thumb, where it meets the wrist. I also had some pain-like numbness(?--hard to describe) going up that ulnar part of my forearm.

I've never had RA, though, so I can't speak to that possibility. Good luck to your friend!

She should try to get an appt with an orthopaedic - orthogirl

as she can probably get in much sooner and if it is Dequervain's, she does not need to see a rheumatologist and also the ortho can also order the blood work for an arthritis work up and she can keep the appt with the rheumatologist in case the blood work comes back positive, but in the meantime, the ortho can do the injections for her if it is DeQuervain's. Good luck to her.

I had this condition in November of last year, and in January got a steroid injection by an orthopedic specialist. Since then the pain is gone. It is a very painful condition that made it literally impossible for me to write, as I am righthanded. Thankfully, one injection did it for me. I also wore a brace for several weeks and tried other conservative measures like applying ice, etc. I was also put on a course of oral prednisone, which really did nothing for it. Good luck to your friend.

Arthritis Pain In KneesNov 22, 2010
I was diagnosed with arthritis in my right knee in January and I cannot believe how fast it is progressing.  I now have it in both knees.  Transcribing makes it really ache because of the foot pedal.  I take Vicodin but some days that doesn't help and sometimes it makes me very sleepy.  Does anyone know of anything else I can try?  This is really affecting my ability to get my line counts and therefore my income.  Thanks! ...

My Lab Mix Is Seriously Ill Today Because I Overdosed Him On Arthritis MedMay 08, 2011
I must have been distracted when the vet told me I had to get my dog blood tests every 6 months if he stayed on his arthritis meds. I thought he had poisoned himself eating something out in the yard, but the vet thinks it's the medicine. I was supposed to give him half a pill and for the past several days I've been giving him a whole pill, because I thought he needed it. It can cause stomach ulcers, which in his case are causing acute vomiting and diarrhea. Earlier today I saw way too ...

Knee Arthritis. My Knees Are So Stiff, When I Get (sm)Jan 16, 2014
up from a sitting position especially.  I have to stand there a minute to get moving.  Stairs are even hard.  What can I do to keep them bendable?  Is it better to keep bending and exercising them or trying not to?  I hate getting old.  I just hate it.  I'm feeling sorry for myself today. ...

Minor Question - Finger ArthritisDec 19, 2016
In the grand scheme of things this is a very paltry question, but it's new to me, so would like to hear about any tips or fixes. I'm in my 60s but have never had arthritis, no pains anywhere, even with doing MT for 30 years. I do have the Heberden's nodes on a couple fingers, but again, no pain associated with them.  But one night 2 weeks ago, I got off work and realized my left ring finger was swollen and stiff at the PIP joint. My wedding ring, which I've always been a ...

For Those Of You With Various Health Issues, Including Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, EtcNov 01, 2013
As an older MT, I started suffering from "aches and pains" as well as some other health issues.  I had been taking 8-12 Tylenol a day and didn't like that idea, because of potential liver damage.  My doctor subsequently put me on tramadol because of the pain issues and I had been taking 1-2 of those a day. I had been talking to a couple of friends of mine who knew of my health issues and they suggested that I try a relatively new nutritional supplement.  I decided to give it ...

THAT Versus WHOAug 05, 2016

IUD Versus TubalFeb 03, 2012
Does anyone have advice on the pros and cons of these 2 procedures?  I am so unsure of what to do.  I am 39 and sure I want no more children.  The price for the tubal is why I am hesitating.  I have a $2500 deductible to meet and then pay 20% after that.  The operation is anywhere from 6 to 8000.  I hesitate about the hormones in the IUD and other side effects I have read about.   ...

What You At First Thought The Doc Said VersusMay 17, 2017
My most memorable was a doctor I was transcribing who was obviously from India and had a very strong accent.  I was typing away with very little problem understanding him until he stated, "De peshent hez a heestorrrry of sorrrry asses."  He said it just like that, a heestorrrry of sorrrry asses.  After listening for the third time, I finally heard it; "a history of psoriasis."    ...

Olbermann Versus GoreApr 06, 2012
And Rush is still on the air. Ding. ding, ding.  Round #2..... LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Current TV on Friday counter-sued former host Keith Olbermann, claiming he failed to perform his duties for the progressive television network and saying it does not owe him "a dime" of the millions Olbermann claims he is owed. Style Versus SubstanceOct 04, 2012
Being the raging Liberal  that I am, I was feeling somewhat disappointed that President Obama did not slam Romney into the mat.  Then I reailzed that Obama was being Obama.  Obama gives cool, thoughtful, measured answers when he is discussiing things.  The debate was not a football game or wresting match where the loudest, longest, most forceful talker wiins.  I did think Romney looked a bit wild eyed and caffeined up.  I am thinking that his eyes looked l ...

Media Versus FactsAug 24, 2013
As I read this forum a few times a week, first of all, I am convinced that some of those posting are only here for a fight and are not transcriptionists. I am not a political science student and I only know about the things that affect me and I know very little about those things that do not directly affect me in the world. Hillary Versus Obama For PresidentFeb 20, 2014
When Obama and Hillary were up against each other for the Democratic nomination, my  thinking was that neither of them had the experience to be president of the United States.   The only office they held was a few years as a senator, no military service, didn't run a business, never ran a company, nothing.  My fears were borne out with Obama - 5 years later and he still doesn't know how to be a leader.  Now we talk about Hillary as if her dabbling in the senate ...

MEDICAL CODING/ANDREWS VERSUS ALLIEDAug 28, 2015
Hi fellow MT's: Been stuck in the 20 year MT rut! Southern Conservatives Struggling Over Economic Advancement VersusOct 21, 2012
is running into much the same intractable head-butting instead of sensible solutions here as the rest of the country. “I’ve been in politics for 30 years, and I saw firsthand after I was elected the split within the Democratic Party,” said Eric Johnson, who was in the Georgia legislature for 15 years. “Now you’ve got the rural conservative Republicans and the suburban moderates and libertarians. I don’t think you have as broad an ideological split as the ...
