CPAP problem

Posted: Feb 28, 2015

Last Tuesday, I started on a trial period using the CPAP.  The company gave me a loaner of the machine, mask, and hose. Because I'm immune compromised, I asked them whether anyone had used the equipment before me.  They assured me they autoclave everything before they give it out.

On Thursday night, exactly two & a half days after I started the CPAP, I came down with a bad head cold.  This is the exact incubation period for the cold virus, and I'm extremely reluctant to re-start using the machine.  I haven't had a cold for 3 years, I live alone, and I wasn't in contact with anyone with a cold during that time.

I'm planning to call the company on Monday to tell them what happened.  I want to bring in the equipment and watch them autoclave everything.   I'm still motivated to use the CPAP, but it's just too much of a coincidence that I got the cold after using it. I'd really appreciate some advice on an assertive but polite way to talk to them.

Is there any way you can sanitize it yourself? Perhaps there's something that can be used at home to sterilize equipment like yours. Could be worthwhile to call a home health equipment service & see what they do with the stuff they have. If nothing else, maybe you could take CPAP to them & have them sterilize it.

My thoughts on that - sm

You already used the equipment! It is too late to do anything about it now ... you already breathed in anything that was there.

Chances are far better that you got the cold from the CPAP guy himself or something you touched.

Personally, given the difficulty in sanitizing machinery, I would not have accepted a used machine.

However, you did. Taking it back to make them clean it in front of you is a bit excessive because what they will now be cleaning are YOUR germs. It also won't clean it any better because you are watching.

I've actually been putting off getting a CPAP because of my fear of... - OP

contamination, and now I'm even more afraid. I realize there's no way of proving how I got the cold. But if a loaner can't be completely sanitized, then my only option would be to buy a new one. This would be a very expensive proposition if it turns out I can't tolerate using it.

Then talk to your doctor about your fears - sm

It isn't a question of "proving" that you got the cold from the machine. It is most likely that you got it somewhere else. However, it is a lot like believing in UFOs ... nothing can change the belief because nothing can disprove it. You will believe it is the machine until you no longer want to.

This is something you need to discuss with your doctor.

Did you wash the mask and hose with soap and hot water? (sm) - nunya

Did you also wash the humidifier before using? That's all you really needed to do. The machine itself only blows out air. If you did get a cold from using CPAP, it was probably from the humidifier. It's why I quit using a humidifier. It was too much of a pain to clean daily and I would forget to buy distilled water so used tap water. It was nothing but a big petri dish.

I now have the hose plugged right into the machine and sleep like the dead, but with very pleasant dreams. I love my CPAP. Wouldn't want to be without it.

The company told me the mask was new, so I didn't wash it before - OP

I used it. They gave me a used hose, but said it had been autoclaved, and I didn't use the humidifier.

Thanks very much for your encouraging words. I'm hoping that things will work out after I've spoken to the company about my concerns.

I use a CPAP. I wash all my hoses, humidifier tank, nose pillows, filters, etc with antibacterial soap and warm water, and then clean them with vinegar. if the smell gets to you, then wash after the vinegar soak. My humidifier tank recently got mold and lime build up, and had to replace it. No things are not cheap, but so worth the effort. I feel so much better and when I don't use my CPAP, I am a zombie all day the next day. I am going to try the suggestion without the humidifier though, worth a shot. Good luck.

CPAP USERS???Apr 15, 2010
Hi.  Just had a sleep study test.  They think I have sleep apnea causing my hypertension (which I've had forever I'm afraid) because know the medications aren't working as well.  My question is basically has anyone had success with the CPAP machine?   The people I have talked to say they are never compliant with it.  Since I usually sleep on my side or on my back - I am dubious about expending the time and money for one!   I was a little pi- ...

CPAP MACHINE (sleep Machine) Feb 21, 2010
I got one on Monday and for some reason I take it off at 3am. My DH said he came in later to check on me and I snoring like a logger. When I wore it in the hospital for the test, it was much more comfortable than this one. Maybe I keep the straps too tight so no air will blow out. And maybe after a while I will get more use to it. My DH has had one for about 10 yrs. and I always punched him when his machine made a sound but he hasn't punched me once. In your mind can you imagine 2 people in ...

Have A Cat ProblemSep 10, 2010
I recently gave away the last of my momma cat's five kittens and she is now engorged and leaking milk.  The babies didn't go all at once--one one week, two the next, etc.--but she is still making milk.  She looks uncomfortable but I don't think she has a fever.  Will this resolve itself or will she need medical attention (besides the spaying coming up soon!)?  Thanks for any suggestions. ...

OMG - I HAVE A PROBLEM!!!Sep 09, 2010
I have a dilemma.  I brought in a woman to rent my room on Saturday for 200.00 without a lease.  Within 3 hours, the entire house reeked of very strong cinnamon incense.  Fine...then comes Sunday, she begins by making coffee in my coffee pot and cleaning my kitchen counters, her first load of clothes goes in at at 9 AM and she washes clothes until late that night.  She puts her dish towels in place and takes it upon herself to wash mine.  She then finds a Sun-T ...

South Korea's president convened an emergency national security meeting Friday, a day after an official report concluded that North Korea was responsible for the deadly sinking of a naval patrol ship. for example, we have people today posting on the MM board that they cherry pick and that if we were smart, we'd do it to.  We have people who post that if I get my feelings hurt by something posted on these forums, it's because I'm too sensitive (certainly not because what they said is too harsh, oh no!).  Bet you anything these people claim to be Christian.  It's okay though because they believe.  They got their get out of jail free card.  They' ...

Am I Expecting Too Much...What Is My Problem?Feb 12, 2011
I feel myself sliding into a horrible depression and I honestly don't know why.  I've never been depressed before in my life except for fleeting circumstantial incidents that resolved within a few days but I just can't shake this. What confuses me is I don't know WHY I'm depressed.  I'm married to a wonderful, beautiful guy who treats me like a queen.  We have a very nice little life together, albeit not with a huge amount of financial freedom.  ...

The Real ProblemSep 07, 2011
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man ...

Problem With NeighborJun 21, 2014
I'm starting to have a problem with my neighbor. We live in a community of little cottages that are very close together. The decks of the individual cottages are actually joined, so there is really only a few feet between our back door and their back door. They just had a baby, and the other day, he came over and was complaining to my husband about his smoke coming in their window. We are not supposed to smoke inside the unit, and when we moved in, the property manager said that eve ...

Family Problem...Apr 26, 2015
Hi :) I have a family problem.  I will give you some background information first.  Sorry for the length as I try to explain. I was raised in a small town by my mother and stepfather (she has been with him since I was 1, so for many years). I grew up with one sibling, my half-sister (my mom and stepdad's daughter). I always knew of my biological father.  I would see him at various events, and he was at my 6th grade graduation, although he never really said more to me than h ...

Cat And Litter Box ProblemJun 01, 2015
Long story short (I wish): I realized our cat was peeing on the new carpet in the family room. She has 2 litter boxes and has always used one for pee and one for poop, but as she in an indoors/outdoors cat, she rarely uses either box except in winter.. We took her to the vet who said that he didn't think she had a UTI but that she might have/have had an infection of the vulva (blank stare from my husband at that point). The vet gave us meds which we used without really knowing if she did ha ...

This article mentions the FBI, Homeland Security, etc., are all concerned at what is going on and how bad the situation is with cyberattacks.&nb ...
