send me your tips on sitting still

Posted: Nov 28, 2012

I seriously need some motivation tips on sitting still.  I have work but cannot seem to stay glued to my chair.  Instead I'm up pouring a water, or yelling at the dog, or or or or or LOL.   Help me!

im bored out of my mind!

;

I have a mini DVD player on my desk - RC

And I watch movies while I work.

How do you do a movie - and transcribe/edit at the same time?

[ In Reply To ..]
I could see having some background music, but how do you watch/listen to the movie and also transcribe/edit? When I'm editing, I have the voice along with it. Maybe for rad it's different, I do acute care only and I can't take my eyes off the screen or my ears off the voice for one second.

I don't pay much attention - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
To the movie, not the dictation. LOL

I don't do radiology, so I don't know how different it is.

I put the movie on so I can see it in my peripheral vision, and in moments when the doctor is going "uhhh, ummm, uhhh, hey carol, can you bring me that paper, uhhh..." I watch the movie.

Those are the moments when I tend to start googling or goofing off, then I waste time because I don't get back to work. But if I just glance over and watch the movie for a few seconds and wait it out, I get right back to what I'm supposed to be doing.
Wow - I cannot shift gears like that. LOL

I think I would short-circuit my brain if I did that. I also find competing voices from a radio or TV distracting. However, interestingly, voices of people nearby my office and such doesn't distract me. I can have music on lightly, but only easy listening instrumental type.

I have the same problem. My way of solving it is to have a timer and with empty bladder, set it for 2 hours. I am not allowed to leave my desk while that timer is ticking, unless the house is burning down, NO EXCEPTIONS otherwise. At the end of 2 hours, I can take a break (approximately 15 minutes.) Then with bladder empty, I reset the timer for two hours. This time I take 30-60 minute break, have lunch, go outside and take a short walk if the weather is pleasant, etc., then back to my desk (bladder empty) set the timer, when 2 hours is up, take a 15 minute break, (empty bladder!) set the timer again, and voila I have put in my 8 hours.

I may try this - grits

I'm eat up with ADD (you see me here on the boards with a job waiting) while under the gun for my production.

One thing that has worked for me in the past is to set little personal goals. 5 jobs per hour is my current one - it may not seem like much to some of you speed demons, but it's a challenge for me.

thanks everyone i appreciate the help! - radmt

[ In Reply To ..]
I'll start tomorrow and give the 2-hour interval a shot. Although I know its been tempting in the past and barely get through 1 hour w/o peeing. haha But tomorrow is a new day! right?! Everyone is working on my account today and feel somehow this has given me motivation to work right along ... it's been a pleasure. not feeling so 'alone'.
Speed demons invade me tonight while i sleep! :)

Sometimes I set up my laptop on Xfinity and do the same thing...have a show playing in the background. You are so right, if i start googling, it seems 20 mins flys right by ... Lots of ideas for tomorrow! I'll report back in!

set up your desk so you can occasionally stand and work - - moi

It's a hassle to re-arrange everything, but worth it.

over the years, i have struggled with the same .. after finding i would spend more than 8 hours a day getting in my lines/work, i finally (talk about slooow LOL).. realized there was more to life that chasing the day b/c i couldn't sit down and type!.. so yep - i can relate

That's one of the biggest reasons why I had to get away from home-based transcription and get back out of the house and working in the real world. I could NOT force myself to sit still, as I was bored out of my mind. I know work in a small office doing medical records, etc., and am very happy.

However, here are some of the tricks I tried to motivate myself to work longer:

1. A jar of M&Ms: For each report you finish, you get an M&M.
2. Have a TV or radio playing in the room just to give yourself something else to "listen" to.
3. Take a break every hour and stretch, do jumping jacks, run in place. Get your blood flowing, then sit back down.
4. Deep breathing/relaxation exercises, but not to the point you fall asleep!
5. Make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. It's hard to sit still and work when your body is worn out.
6. When you are NOT working, get out of the house. Do not spend ANY of your non-working hours sitting at the computer for any reason.

Good luck!

I love the M&M idea!!! to reward myself with food is a fabulous way to live :) especially with chocolate

Afraid of the M&M idea. Sure, it starts as 1 at a time, then it becomes a spoonful, then, "oh heck, why not a handful." (Just kidding.) Really good ideas posted, though.

produce in excess of required amount by the end of the pay-period. Edit/type like there is a man standing behind you and holding a gun to your head.

Seriously though, just think about your bills. Everytime you want to get up, say I gotta pay that gas bill or I gotta pay my rent. Just imaging how much money you are losing out on everytime you get up.

Today I used the gun to my head theory!lol - boredradMT

each time i wanted to rise from my seat I remembered the gun to my head! It kept me seated to pay my astronomical utility bill. with the beauty of the a/c running in the summer. :) and winter months here in south florida.

To Send Or Not To Send Christmas Cards? SmDec 17, 2010
In the age of cell phones and computers, I figure that I would text Merry Christmas to everyone and/or send free e-cards via email or other social network sites. Some disagree with me that that is too informal, lazy, what have you. I do have some cards that I do send to people with no phone, PC, or do not have their number or email, i.e. elderly folks and neighbors. My thoughts on this are: A. I already pay for my cell phone and email so texting and e-cards are free. B. I can send the same car ...

VR TipsMar 13, 2013
Does anybody have any ideas on how to improve my speed with VR?  It's supposed to be so terrible to take your hands off the keys, but we have to do that constantly to hit the arrow key, the control key, the delete key, etc.-- then when we need to make a correction, we have to put them back on, and I always put them back on in the wrong place.  It seems as if we need two extra hands.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks. ...

I Need Organizing TipsFeb 25, 2011
Has anybody out there gone from an office where paperwork is everywhere to a serene, organized work environment?  What changes did you make to bring this about?   I share a home office with my husband.  He lets paperwork pile up (medical stuff, school paperwork, as well as work-related - even junk mail sometimes, if he thinks there might be anything interesting in it) and things really get out of hand quickly in our office. I want to walk in and see everything put away with clear ...

Wrinkle TipsJan 17, 2015
Help, please!!  I am turning 40 this year and I have started getting the lines under my eyes and I hate them.  Does anyone know of any creams that I can buy that legitimately do help with face wrinkles.  I'm an MT, on an MT budget, so I'm talking Wal-Mart or pharmacy creams, not anything super expensive.  And, one more question.  Also facial makeup.  Anyone know a good base foundation that covers wrinkles really well?  Again, I'm talking Wal-Mar ...

I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010
I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.   Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.   I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.   Thank you. ...

More Money-Saving TipsOct 15, 2013
I had wanted to respond to money-saving ideas but didn't get to it until the post was way, way down the screen! I go to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. These days, they're like regular shops. Everything is clean, not ripped or stained or anything. The ones by us have the racks color-coded---if you want a pink shirt, you go to the shirts and from there, the pink shirts are all in a row. If you need green pants, you go to where the pants are, and the green pants are all in a row. T ...

Tips On Making A Shadow BoxDec 10, 2015
I decided to make one for Mr. Nik for Christmas with some mementos.  I bought the box (plain black wood and fairly deep), but that I look at some completed shadow boxes online, I am overwhelmed by how lovely they are (but intricate)! Has anyone here made a shadow box and if so are there some helpful hints you can give a first-timer? ...

Any Tips On Finding Decent Doctor?Jul 08, 2010
Went to a new doc after many years of not going.  As I was speaking of a series of upsetting deaths and started to cry a tiny bit, he just kept clicking away on his lap top (and maybe nodded a couple times).  Aside from that, my TSH was in the normal range (but near one end) and no free T3 or T4 were done, but I have had numerous thyroid symptoms for 12 years or so (didn't realize they correlated for several years and never had it assessed).  He said my TSH was VERY normal so ...

Any Tips On Using Cold Water To Defrost A 17-pound Turkey?Nov 17, 2011
I usually buy fresh birds, but opted for the more budget-friendly 39-cents-per-pound rock-solid frozen version this time  This turkey will be cooked before Sunday (hving an erly get-together), so I don't quite have enough time to defrost it in the fridge.  The instructions suggest submersion in "cool" water in the sink for 30 minutes per pound, with frequent water changes.  It has air-tight vacuum sealed packaging.  I'm thinking that changing the wat ...

What Sitting At Desk All Day Does To UsAug 15, 2015
I bet I'm not the only MT who has near-debilitating pain in the "sitz bones," aka ischial tuberosity pain.  It's directly related to the fact that I sit all day long at my keyboard.  I've tried buying ergonomic chairs and expensive seat cushions, adjusting my desk, sitting up as straight as I can, all to no avail.  I've even had 2 rounds of corticosteroid injections in both ischial tuberosities, right and left.  Ahhhh.....the effects of the steroid injecti ...

So...I Was Sitting On My Couch Thinking...Oct 23, 2012
and I remembered the debate in which President Obama pointed out that Mitt Romney didn't have an actual plan outlined and that if anyone had gone to him with an idea without the plan outlined, that person would have been crazy to invest in it...kinda thing.  I find that funny actually.  Didn't we do that with Obamacare?  Pelosi said we had to pass it to find out what was in it.  As far as having a plan, what happened to Obama's plan when he ran in 2008.  ...

Sitting Here Crying, Can Hardly See Thru Tears.Jul 24, 2014
I am so sad, broken hearted, things are not going well, I am so unhappy I dont want to even go on.  Please, pray for a fellow MT who is in a life situation with many stressors, and fearing for my job like so many others.   Hoping that even one small prayer from someone will help turn things around. ...

Instead Of A Big Brown Box Sitting In The KitchenJan 21, 2015
I buy sweet potatoes by the box load, about 25 pounds at a time, also buy onions and oranges the same way at the farmer's market. Would anyone have any ideas about how to store the items instead of their being in the boxes like they are now, out in the kitchen? I have no storage space in my cabinets and where they are located now is like a cubby hole under a desk, not a movable one but one made into the countertop. Thanks for any ideas. ...

These 73 Sitting Democrats Voted To Ban Visas From Muslim CountriesFeb 02, 2017
Trump’s executive order is so modest that the foundation of it is essentially existing law. That law was passed unanimously by both bodies of Congress in 2002. In fact, it garnered the support of 16 Democrat senators and 57 Democrat House members who are still serving in their respective bodies! Following 9/11, Congress passed the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act, which addressed many of the insecurities in our visa tracking system. The bill passed the House and Senate un ...

U.S. To Send Delegation To Chavez's FuneralMar 07, 2013
The delegation will be rubbing elbows with a lot of enemies. Will the delegation even be allowed in the country? Guess time will tell.   Venezuela’s long, weepy goodbye to Hugo Chavez carried on Thursday as foreign heads of state — and even a delegation sent by the Obama administration — made their way to Caracas in advance of Friday’s funeral. Venezuelan authorities have not said when Chavez will be laid to rest, nor exactly where. It was just one of many uncerta ...

House Democrats Send Wrong SignalNov 21, 2010
I think Pelosi's ego needs some downgrading. Our country does not need "me-me" politicians.  We need to watch them closely (and I'm not just talking about Pelosi-even though I can't stand her) but this article shows how much she doesn't care for protocol or the rules.   When the rules of the House of Representatives forced the Democrats to confront a painful choice among their leaders, they did what Democrats are often inclined to do. They changed the ru ...
