obesity in America

Posted: Jun 12, 2012

People wonder sometimes why some peole are obese.  One reason is because the food that we can afford is doing it, like potatoes, pasta, and rice.  All of which are cheaper and great fillers.  Not necessarily overeating sugar is doing it.  What do you think?

;

I've said the same thing for a long time - - Isn't it ironic? - nm

I absolutely agree with you. All sugar is bad, including those complex carbs that you listed, and these will turn into fat if excessive, plus ad to clogging of the arteries, etc. When I gave all those up, I lost a ton of weight.

It's really the excessive carbs that we eat that add to heart disease, and is not necessarily only saturated fats that are to blame.

Also, have you noticed that food is used for entertainment and is always included at any event we attend, and not just on holidays? What do some people do on special occasions like birthdays, but "go out to eat." Everyone thinks that they need to feed us, whether it be at a church or community event, a visit to friend or family, a fair, an event that's really not related to food in any way where refreshments seem to be everywhere.

I, for one, would love to go to a movie theater where food is limited or totally prohibited. I think popcorn and candy are bad enough, but a new theater just came to our town that serves full meals, has waitresses and waiters, and even serves alcoholic beverages at any time. This addition to the movie theater atmosphere has apparently increased their overall business substantially. So, what does that say about our society?

I recently wanted to go see a movie and didn't want to have to keep getting up and down to allow the waiters to serve the customers in the middle seats, and really didn't want to have to listen to the added noises, so I chose to go to a different theater 10 miles further away. But, I'm the one who is considered the odd one because I just want to see the movie, not stuff myself while doing so.

Oh no, you didn't! - Dickens

Anyone tries to take my popcorn away at the theater, and I will revolt!

there is sugar in potatoes? - huh?

[ In Reply To ..]
I just saw on Dr Oz yesterday that pasta is fine in the proper amount and without all the crap added on top of it, butter, cheese, etc.

So, you think pasta, ricke and potatoes are making me fat? Are you saying all carbs?

I am so confused on this diet garbage. One day carbs are bad, one day good. One day low fat is good, the next day it is bad. How the heck am I supposed to know what to eat anymore?

Starches turn into sugar so of course - MTMT

there is sugar in potatoes. The main thing is if you eat these types of foods, eat them in moderation. Our plates have become bigger over the years. They used to be much smaller, but we have these extra large plates now but we don't have to fill them up. Also, if we take our time to eat, we will get full faster and won't overeat. We are all always in a hurry. I say "we" cause I am one of those "obese". I know what to do, but saying it and doing it are 2 completely different things. But, my main thing is some people are just too poor to buy the better foods, so they eat what they can afford "ramen noodles, potatoes and such". I'm just saying all the snack cakes (little debbie) and such are not the only culprit for making us overweight.

that is really simple - fitness instructor

Eat whole foods like lean meats, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

A combination of things. - What I think.

[ In Reply To ..]
I did read years ago that our consumption of carbs and sugar has gone up the last 25 years or something like that(seems like a bakery shop is on every corner these days), but, IMO, the lack of movement is the bigger culprit. Factor in all the times we are static: Car/other transportation rides, TV, computer for work and recreation, plus general relaxation. I once kept a week-long log to see how much time I sat, and it was a real eye opener.

My theory on obesity. - It started getting really bad

[ In Reply To ..]
When they started putting corn sugar in EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING that is prepared food, even stuff where you would never suspect it. What do they use to fatten up cows and pigs? Corn.

exactly!! - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
been saying this for years and nobody believes me, call me a crack pot, conspiracy theorist, etc. well, the proof is finally starting to come out and it pleases me that it is finally being recognized as a leading factor. guess we are going to have to start growing our own food pretty soon if we want to live a healthy life. we can't rely on the gov. to look out for our health. heck, they WANT us to be obese and sick so the pharmaceuticals, insurance co's, and even drs can make more money!! "and that's the truth!"
You can't blame Michelle Obama - maybe some government though
[ In Reply To ..]
The minute Mrs. Obama starts working with kids to combat obesity, the other side starts pounding on her that "it is our freedom to eat whatever we want and be as lazy as we want!" (and develop diabetes, heart disease, and all sorts of health problems). The food industries (Kraft, Kellogg, Con-Agra) as well as the pharmaceutical companies spend tons of money on advertising to feed us junk and convenience food. As they say, shop the outside rim of the store where the fresh produce, meats, dairy, etc., are located. Avoid all the other aisles where the chips, candies, soft drinks, cereals, and convenience foods are.
who said anything about Michelle Obama?? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
good grief! nobody said a word about her. how do people just off the wall insert these assumptions into somebody elses postings?? ugh!
Because someone blamed it on the government - Connections
[ In Reply To ..]
government wants people to be obese? somebody named anon said that.
the "government" does not entail JUST the Obamas. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
the government is made up of many, many, many different departments and thousands of people. how can you even possibly think that when mentioning that the government is allowing food additives and preservatives and hormones into our food supply that it only means the Obamas? talk about being single sited. no wonder this country is in such a mess!
So it makes sense to blame ALL government? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I prefer to blame the big money that buys the government policies and the people that allow it.
true. you have a point there, but neither are blameless. - anon

enlightening. The body does not process it like real sugar. Also, low fat foods can work against you big time. Did you know fat-free and 2% milk will make you fatter than whole milk? Without the fat in the milk it digests very quickly and puts on the pounds. I read a health article where they quoted an oldtime farmer and he said, When I was ready to take my pigs to market the quickest thing to put extra pounds on them was skim milk."

Plus the fact that we do not work our bodies any more.
My doc said to avoid wheat products - glycemic index
[ In Reply To ..]
Wheat is an ingredient in almost all junk food and cereals. Apparently it makes your blood sugar bounce around like a ping-pong ball, making your LDL cholesterol go up and increasing your weight and chance of diabetes with related diseases. Apparently, the genetic engineering that the chemical companies have done to increase yield have replaced the protein in wheat so it just has more carbs.

I think that obesity started getting really bad when - most people began having sedentary jobs,

[ In Reply To ..]
but continued to eat the same foods and quantities. If people are fat, it is simply because they eat too much and exercise too little. It would be nice if there were some boogie monster to blame it on, but the facts are that if you exercise more and eat less, you will lose weight. I really think that it is an interesting commentary on our society that people want to blame being fat on everyone but themselves. And I am not an incredibly thin person, but I am working on it and I understand that it takes just that - work.

It's lifestyle. - Dickens

[ In Reply To ..]
Barring any medical conditions, with moderate exercise and portion control, I think most people can eat the foods they want without too much trouble. I'm not talking 5 pounds here or there, but if you live this way, you likely won't fall into the obese category. I'm living on a budget, but I do find a way. I used to be 50 pounds overweight, and I know exactly why. It wasn't money.

As proof that I am not rich--I work for Nuance. :P

Those foods with corn syrup added are usually pre-packaged, which are generally more expensive than if you just buy some ingredients and make yourself a much simpler, healthier meal.

I just think too that the older you get - the harder you have to work

[ In Reply To ..]
to keep off the lbs. I think in order for me to lose weight I would have to limit every meal to one spoonful of food, and I am not obese, but not exactly skinny either.

I do try to make it to the gym at least 3 times a week, but other than that I am going from chair to couch to bed every day. Even when I go to the gym I am obsessed with finding the closest parking space possible, LOL!

that's interesting, because the harder I work, - the older I get!!
