What are your thoughts on the young boy shot by the neighborhood watch guy

Posted: Mar 22, 2012

I get sick when I hear that boy calling out before he was shot.

I personally hope they hang the person that shot him.

I think there are some unstable people out - mthead

who should not be in possession of a firearm at any time, and the shooter seems to be one of those people. How he can claim self defense against an unarmed BOY is beyond me. What was he doing, trying to put the guy's eye out with his bag of Skittles? I also feel this was not handled properly or expeditiously by the police department. I know the guy had a carry permit, but I'm wondering what training these neighborhood watch folks get and who trains/screens them. More than that, I feel so, so sorry for this kid's family.

Neighborhood watch not neighborhood patrol - watch captain

I am the Neighborhood watch captain for our street and have been for 20 years. I have NEVER patrolled our street like this guy and the other guy they keep interviewing on the news do. It is "Neighborhood watch", not "Neighborhood patrol, follow and confront someone." We (meaning other members on my street) are supposed to watch what is going on and report suspicious activity to the police. It is not the job of neighborhood watch members/captain to play police officer and follow/chase and confront someone. They should put the guy in jail and throw away the keys, he is a wannabee cop who could not make it on a police force so he is studying criminal justice and playing cop in his neighborhood.

Why has no one brought up the size difference when this guy says it was self defense? The picture of Travon did not look like he was a 215 pound defensive tackle on his school football team. The guy that shot him, from his picture, looks like he is a pretty good sized man. So he was defending himself from a smaller person, who was talking on his cell phone, carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea. Unless Travon was deformed and had more than two hands it doesn't sound like he had much of a way of attacking the guy unless he threw his ice tea at him.

I feel so sorry for the boy's parent's. Not only did they lose a son who was a good kid, his death has resulted in a fight for justice and a media circus when they should be focusing on grieving the loss of their child.

I too.... - alias

feel very badly for the family, and I whole heartedly agree with Travon's mother when she says "this is not a black and white thing, but a right and wrong thing." There are so many unanswered "why's" in this incident, it is pathetic. My question is WHY was the person who "threatened" the police chief (who was not doing anything for the victim in this case), why was he arrested for just making verbal threats, when the perpetrator, who actually took a life, still walks free??? Can anyone answer that? In other words, the police chief's life is more important than the victims. I don't think so. Verbal threats are nothing compared to carrying a gun and stalking a 17 year old boy wearing a hoodie, who just happened to be black. I too am outraged.

Kudos to you for captaining your - mthead

neighborhood watch, and thanks for chiming in here. Have you heard anyone in the media talking about the EXPECTED role of neighborhood watches as compared to what transpired between Travon and the shooter? I wonder if there are laws in Florida that protect the shooters in these instances. Just curious. And I so agree with the comparison regarding Trayvon and the shooter. When I look at that beautiful boy and that shooter side by side, I get so angry; it's obvious who the aggressor was. Sometimes I get a little freaked out when I'm alone and pass by a group of teenaged guys, of any color, because I know teens males can get kind of stupid in groups, but one kid on their own would not be threatening to me, whether I was carrying a gun or not. So sad...

my heart goes out to the family and I think that guy should be charged with murder!!! I sure wouldn't want him guarding our neighborhood, especially with a gun!

I want to know what a neighborhood watch person was doing with a gun! - Zville MT

We have neighborhood watch in our neighborhood too, but it only goes as far as if you see something suspicious, you call the police, you don't go out and hunt the person down and shoot them, especially when the 911 operator was telling him not to do that. This man needs to be charged and spend some time thinking about his racism in jail.

I just don't get it - sm

It's hard for me to understand why the shooter was not arrested. It's not like he shot someone in his own home. It's not like he shot someone who was armed. I just cannot believe that simply telling the police he shot in self defense was enough to let him walk away. I wonder how many people in prison are slapping themselves on the forehead, saying "doh", and wishing they had thought to say the same thing.

The shooter.... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The shooter's parents were in a judicial position for years, not in Florida. I believe they said Georgia. His father was a judge and his mother was and/or is still a court clerk for over 20 years. Think that has something to do with it? The police chief also resigned his position yesterday, "temporarily" and no body knows why. Money talks....

Not only money - SM

Death threats carry a lot of weight, and you can't tell me he and his family have not received a few. This situation in 2012 is unbelievable to me. You can hear Trayvon saying "Why are you following me?" How can you claim self defense when you are the one doing the stalking. Someone in a previous post said no one mentioned the size difference between the two. They did mention it, and they said the shooter was about twice the kid's size.

...that we live in a world where we can become misinformed faster than ever before.

Now it seems that the neighborhood watch guy has a broken nose and an injury to the back of his head, so maybe it isn't all quite the way the media hacks want to make it look.

Isn't it time that we learned not to believe about 95% of the first reports that come out?

Certainly the media today likes to put a spin on anything it reports on....but....I stand by what I said, it was not his role as a neighborhood watch member to follow and confront anyone. His role was to observe and inform. The 911 tape clearly demonstrates that he was asked if he was following the boy and when he replied "Yeah" he was told "We do not need you to do that". It is on the tape loud and clear. That should have been the guy's clue to back off not continue to follow the boy and confront him with "What are you doing around here?". That was the role of the police when they arrived on the scene. Doing nightly patrols with a gun is not the role of a neighborhood watch member. That fact the media cannot distort. Now one month later, he all of the sudden went back to his car, was hit in the nose and had his head smashed into the ground. None of these excuses were ever given by the people that say he has been crying ever since. Yeah, I would be crying too if I killed an unarmed 17-year-old kid that was walking down a street. I am sorry, if the kid did fight back, well...... that is human nature, "fight or flight"; what was the guy doing confronting him? That was a job for the police, whom he had called, and who had told him to not follow the kid.
The media can't change those facts....the 911 tape doesn't lie.

There was another man interviewed that also patrols like this guy, BUT he said he leaves his gun at home. Then he tried to make it sound better for the other guy by saying he had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and that he didn't. I read somewhere on the rules for a a CCW are to abstain, disengage and then fire is necessary, (not the exact wording but meaning you do everything you can to resolve the situation before you shoot).
The media can't change those facts....the 911 tape doesn't lie.

I think you will see that Florida law repealed after all of this is over. Protecting your home is one thing but having the right to shoot anyone who you perceive as a threat when you are harrassing/confronting them is just ridiculous.

Just a little background, I come from a family of police officers and my father was Chief of Homicide for many years. My grandson is 17 and plays football and is half black (that boy could have been him), so I am looking at it from two very different sides and what I have seen just doesn't add up.

Stay tuned - Trampled underfoot

Your scenario isn't quite what happened either. The neighborhood watch guy lost sight of the kid and was returning to his vehicle when the kid came up to him and confronted him, punched him in the face, knocked him down and was pounding his head on the pavement. (This "kid" is 6 foot 3 inches.) People heard Zimmerman calling for help before shooting. (Apparently also heard in 911 call.) There was an independent witness who gave the same story; kid on top of neighborhood watch guy, beating his head into the ground. Police arrive, find corroborating witness, find neighborhood watch guy with injuries consistent with the story. Hence, no arrest.

Apparently, the shooter was allowed to - mthead

shoot the kid under Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law," which is an extension of the Castle Doctrine, which allows Floridians the right to shoot anyone in self defense if they feel they are being threatened in their homes or on their property. I didn't read all of it (trying to get my son out the door to school) but it sounds like the Stand Your Ground Law allows you to use deadly force in self defense outside of your home/property. I've provided a link that I found on Reuters.

Our neighborhood watch program is out of control. Our neighborhood is approximately 1 square mile with 1700 lots that is located in a rural/unincorporated area and is about 12 miles from any shopping district. It is in a low-crime area and we are controlled by an HOA. Our neighborhood watch committee waits in their vehicles on street corners in and outside of our neighborhood taking notes of the comings and goings of the residents. They take shifts and patrol the neighborhood on foot day and nig ...

Neighborhood WatchesApr 26, 2014
I'm just looking for some opinions on so-called organized (or general) neighborhood watches. When we leave town for more than a day or so, I tell just my immediate neighbors. With all good intentions, one of them said, "Oh, okay. I'll tell everybody I know." I asked her not to do that, that I just wanted a few people who lived nearby to know in case they saw something "funny." I don't think it's a good idea for the whole neighborhood to know. All it takes is one errant kid ...

Sad Week - One Of Our Friendly Neighborhood Cats Is GoneAug 26, 2015
We live in a neighborhood and a lot of cats come and go through our yard.  For the past 4 years or so a neighbors cat has been a constant visitor.  During the cold winter nights she would come over and sleep in the boxes with blankets and an outdoor pet heating pad.  She also would eat here too when she was not at her own place.  Actually all of our neighbors take care of all of the cats so that none ever go hungry or don't have a place to get out of the cold.  So f ...

10 Reasons Not To Get The Flu ShotOct 27, 2010
The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict: 1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots.  A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots are on ...
