What Do You Do When The Power Is Out?

I always want a place with a wood burning stove, something for heat other then power, comes in very handy and is the main source of heat at this time.
At this time I have enough gadgets and power for them to most likely last a week, and there are ways to cook, lighting, food, water stays on etc... so it is mostly an entertainment issue when the power goes out and with all these gadgets these days it is easier to stay entertained. Of course if the power goes out during the day I can still work on anything that I normally would.
Having been without power for over a week when - we lived in Washington state...
[ In Reply To ..]I know what I would do. We spent time with neighbors, we barbecued, we played cards and board games. It was actually very nice. We really just enjoyed each other. The downsides were than we had to truck water in for the horses and go elsewhere to shower. Luckily for us, my husband's shop had a shower and power came back on there about 2 days in. :)

[ In Reply To ..]when we lose power, came in handy in Sept. 2011 when the hurricane took us out for 3 days, I was still able to work as I use an air card (phones and satelite internet were out too) though cell reception stunk for about week. We also have a woodburning stove, got that 2 years ago, best $375 we ever spent. Got it used and is a big one, good deal, and heats a 2000 sq. foot house. We also have a propane fireplace so no electric we can still crank that up if we don't feel like lighting up the woodstove. We got the woodstove to help save money on propane as that is our main source of heat with the house furnace but the cost is killing us, saving a fortune with the woodstove, spend tops $400 a year on wood (versus $1600 to $2000 on propane). I eventually want to get a more powerful (propane) generator and have it hardwired into the house so when we do lose power it just kicks on automatically. My dad has one and it is pretty cool, expensive though.

[ In Reply To ..]We had lost power a bunch of times and had our basement flood because of the sump pump not working and lost a ton of stuff, so we finally broke down and spent the cash on a generator and we have not lost power since other than a flash here or there. Five years and we have yet to use it. We got it out a couple times and sure enough the power went back on.
Board games and beer - when I lived in FL
[ In Reply To ..]I lived in a small town in FL one year when about 5 tropical storms came through. A big city probably could have handled it, but we were w/o power for probably 5 weeks out of 3 months.
No gadgets back then. We just played board games day in and day out. It was really lots of fun.
Had a gas grill and beer. We survived and have great memories.
