Was in a medical office today - wanted a job there

Posted: Jan 28, 2013

"The lights were low" - no, this is not the beginning of a romance novel, it's how it was when I walked into this doctor's family practice clinic.  I felt really uptight - I don't have insurance, and was expecting the worst, some zinger of a bill at the very end, some fee, something they hadn't told me about.

The front office was kind of cramped, I admit, the phone ringing, scheduling...but then this calm relaxed medical assistant led me to the room, took my blood pressure (I mean, put a cuff over my arm that automatically inflated and deflated and gave the reading), asked me a few questions...there was some fake plastic lawn growing on the windowsill, and then two of those curlique bamboo plants in glass vases...all very calm, serene...I almost started asking her about her job...I could do her job...how much training did she need for her job, and what did it pay?

So then the doc examines me wth two nurse practitioners...yes, shingles, which I already had figured out from my symptoms..."a very bad case"  - so then he was talking about pain I might have, after shingles subsided - I said, "postherpetic neuralgia" (that's right, I was a medical transcriptionist, I know what he means) - he said, "you are knowledgable" - of course if I was so knowlegeable would I have a bad case of shingles?

Anyway, it was a positive experience, and made me think, I can get out of daycare and away from toddler illnesses...I mean, I've worked in clinics before and never gotten anything from patients...there are all kinds of jobs out there...maybe I don't want to work at a hospital, but at a small clinic where the lights are low....now maybe that's a possibility...I've got a whole week off from my daycare job to job hunt!!!  Thanks, doc!

nice idea, WMJ... - sm

I'm having complete brainlock, so I appreciate hearing about new possibilities.

By the way, I don't know how you feel about homeopathic medications, but many who suffer with shingles and postherpetic neuralgia benefit from Rhus toxicodendron. Feel better soon!

When you say toddler illnesses, you do not think - P

do you that you got shingles from a kid do you? You do know it comes from the fact you had chicken pox as a child, right and it just lays dorminant until later on in life?? I had a slight case of shingles, knew what it was before exam by doctor as right at belt line, itchy but caught in time. Also would do people good who have had chicken pox as kids to get the vaccination against shingles.

If I know what postherpetic neuralgia is... - wheres_my_job

I'm pretty sure I comprehend what "reactivated" means, when it comes to latent chicken pox in adults.

I also comprehend that no one has of yet pinpointed exactly what causes that reactivation to occur. Stress, lack of sleep, compromised immune system - but maybe an additional trigger is grubby hands of toddlers with virus and rash themselves.

I congratulate you on your sterling proactive health care behaviors. Bravo for you. But I reject your attempt to shame me (and everyone else with shingles) because our response to our illness was different.

You were the 1 who stated getting away from - P

toddler illnesses as if that is where the shingles came from, that was the gist of your post, right? Why get so huffy when you yourself posted this getting out of daycare and away from toddlers. You said that, not me.

Just having some fun, it's allowed, I have shingles, the doc gave me a note to have fun 5x a day.

Sigh - Herpes comes from chicken pox, and the best - place to get chicken pox is from kids.
[ In Reply To ..]

So is it that you actually want a different job or just to come here - and brag about how knowlegable you are?

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, we ALL know what postherpetic neuralgia is, we too are MTs. Yes we also know the causes, symptomes, etc.

I saw no indication of her trying to "shame you" or anyone in her message. You don't need to get snippy about it to her. I read your message and you are the one who said you had shingles and wanted to "get out of daycare and away from toddler illnesses". I too thought the same thing, shingles is not a childhood illness. If you've never had chicken pox and said you had chicken pox and wanted to get away from childhood illness that would make sense. My dad and a cousin on the opposite sides of the country both have shingles right now, they didn't catch it from kids.

I think you need to chill with being so defensive. I congratulate you on your knowledge of what you had before you went to the doctor. I'm sure he was very impressed that you knew a medical term, but cheesers man take a chill pill (might not cure the herpes, but it might help to not be snippy to other posters, especially where snarkyness was not needed).
Nah, just came to brag here, that's all :) - wheres_my_job

I probably was a little more "brunt" than I should have been, sorry. I did like your story though because it read like something I'd read in Reader's Digest. I think with your writing skills you should try and get some short stories or something published. Bet it would be more lucrative than a "job". You do write good posts here. Sorry to hear you were sick. Shingles are miserable. My DH had them and oh he was in so much pain. I guess I don't have to worry because I never had the Chicken Pox, but did get vaccinated for it as an adult. They had to put me on BCP so I wouldn't get pregnant for a few weeks and I'll tell ya I was like a mad women for a week. Major mood swings and extreme PMS. DH said Jeepers man got off those things, well deal with defects if it happens. LOL
I agree - I should get some things published - wheres_my_job

You or I could be the "Erma Bombeck of medical transcription." Maybe you're too young to know who Erma Bombeck is. Don't know about "lucrative" part of getting published - but I admit, I do harbor ambitions in that direction!
Didn't she write The Grass is not always greener over - the septic tank?
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm 53 years old. Her name is familiar, but mostly stuff my mom would read.

You know "The Grass is not always greener over the Septic tank" could be about our field. LOL
Yeah...I think that's her - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
I can pick up her paperbacks at the Salvation Army for 33 cents. If you read her stuff, she's like a sitcom on TV - that is, the jokes are like, 1, 2, 3, one right after the other - it gets a bit tiresome in a longer piece - like, if she could slow down and reflect a little...but she was one of the first female writer-comics, or whatever you want to call her - oh well, I'm rambling now.

If I had time...I just went back and looked through my novel, and realized I haven't printed up the last revision of the last 2 chapters I worked on - I was reading my novel here and there...and I liked it! It wasn't cringe-worthy! (It has been cringe-worthy, trust me).

Anyway I have to get those 2 chapters printed up. I think it would be a gas to just, all in a marathon writing session, throw together something maybe 50 pages long, about medical transcription, a humor book, but symbolic of all these kinds of "jobs disappearing" situations - time, time, time, time though!!!!!!

Novel first....
You could look into web content writing. - grits

seems like they always want you to write about stuff that would require a lot of research time...and then lots I've seen, you do it for free......so I don't know. Or review restaurants or local "scene" - LOL. Oh well. I've got to get some stuff printed now.

I'm a little baffled. - recent shingles here
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not here to fuel any flames, but I don't get the point of even going to the doctor.

When I discovered I had shingles, not from what I knew from MT, but from researching my symptoms, I realized there was no point in even going to the doctor unless outbreak was caught in the very earliest stages.

So if not caught in earliest stage, The Google said the only treatment was symptomatic and comfort care, i.e., Caladryl, and depending on living situations evacuating the house so you can walk around unclothed in respective shingles outbreak body points ;-)

But my daughter nixed that approach since she insisted on driving 2 hours to bring me a lifetime supply of Caladryl. It was helpful, but I would have preferred to be naked.
Your daughter has never seen you naked? - L&L
[ In Reply To ..]
You have seen here naked.

Anyway, I had a pharmacist offering shingles shots ($200, btw) who said they were not effective after you had an outbreak and a doctor on a local newscast who say you could still get vaccinated after you had had an outbreak.

Any of you smart___ MTs out there know which is them is correct?
Well, yes, I guess she has... but her husband - hasn't :-/ (nm)

[ In Reply To ..]
A shingles vaccination will lessen the symptoms of any new outbreak but it won't be as effective as if you had the vaccination before the outbreak. I got my shot from Kaiser, my insurance provider, and it was, thankfully, free.

Is that "the very earliest stages?" Ophthalmic shingles can make you go blind, and some people can have multiple dermatomes involved. It's always best if you have a doctor or NP or something, to go see them (in my opinion) if you're having a health issue. "The Google" is not sufficient, "The Google" doesn't know your individual medical history.

But hey, that's just my opinion. No flaming intended (I leave that to the experts, which appear to be quite a few on this board) :)

Medical Office / Constructive Feedback X-postedFeb 22, 2017
At one time, the office may have been less professional but also friendly. There was a change in office manager and things are very rigid. I think they try to act so professional they lose something in the process. A lot of reviews have stated the front-desk people are rude. This was true in the past for some time but staff has changed. They are very rigid. I liked the office more when you could hear the staff chatting among themselves at the beginning of the day. There once was a worker who got ...

Should I Mention About A Possible Medical Issue Or NotDec 27, 2009
Some time back I mentioned to my DIL that her father should get his heart checked out. I noticed he had creases in his earlobes. The reason I mentioned is was for the fact I had a cardiologist who says this over and over in dictations, then when studying further found it could mean heart problems. Well, you would have thought I had tried to kill someone, everyone sprang into action stating there was nothing wrong with him at all.
