Pros and cons on medical marijuana???

Posted: Jun 8, 2012

Well here in California, we have passed a prop that OK's the sale of marijuana in pot shops, although it restricts exactly what areas they can run these businesses.  Such as they must be at least 1 mile from schools and churches.  Other restrictions too.  But evidently the people of California do not want to make medical marijuana illegal.  So they are still in business.

In my opinion, selling marijuana is beneficial for patients with chronic conditions, such as cancer, some painful diseases of the spine and nervous system, etc.  The only problem here of course is that it is abused as always by those who are not sick.  I have heard it reported that young adults or teenagers will steal medical marijuana from their sick relatives -- that is pathetic in my opinion.

Kids will take Percocet, Vicodin, even Benadryl... There is no keeping kids from anything. If it is in production, kids can get their hands on it.

I personally dont believe it should be legal, for any reason. There are other drugs for people with cancer and other diseases.

I think money spent on law enforcement of people smoking marijuana is really a waste and I dont see how we can say well you can go home and crack open and drink a Bud...but ya cant smoke one. Doesn't really make sense to me.

dangerous, not only to health, but to life and limb, and yet it's legal. I don't do either drug, but have lots of friends who smoke pot, and know too many drinkers, that's for sure.

The ONE MAIN DIFFERENCE I see between the two is the generalized psychiatric result: Pot seems to make people relaxed and mellow, whereas SO many people are "mean drunks". I have yet to see a pot-smoker pick a fight with anyone, yet I see alcohol-induced fights all the time. Frequently, the violence that erupts after sports events, such as the near-fatal beating of a Giants baseball fan last year in Los Angeles, are fueled by alcohol.

If I'm at a party, and someone offers me a drink and I politely decine, they often respond with something to the effect of, "Oh, c'mon! Don't be such a stick-in-the-mud! Have a drink and loosen up!" Yet if I'm a at another party, and someone offers me a joint and I say "No thank you", they're cool with it.

I've known people suffering through chemotherapy who have benefitted greatly from using medical marijuana, especially when it comes to stimulating their appetites.

I realize pot isn't for everyone -- it's not even for me -- but I think everyone has a right to use it if it helps them. And if it's legalized, then there's no need to steal it when you can grow your own.

in any way or, if you do not have any, you have withdrawals, should be illegal.

Does that mean even prescription drugs? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There are many prescription medications that are useful drugs that people need that if you stop them too fast, you have withdrawals. Are you saying those medications should also be illegal?

I think that if a medicine is not abused and used properly and it helps a condition, it should be legal. I think there are many arguments for marijuana that it can help certain ailments, it is just a matter of it should not be abused, which unfortunately, it is but should you punish those who use it correctly that actually need it because of some bad apples? I totally agree with above, that alcohol has the same issues and it is legal.

I recently made an attempt to stop eating everything "white" in my diet, sugar being the main one. Talk about withdrawals! ugh! Very painful, indeed. If you think that sugar is not a drug, try "getting off of it!"

My fiance was diagnosed with bipolar disorder recently and refuses to take any meds for it because, as he puts it, "I'm not crazy." The only time his mood is regulated is when he smokes. He doesn't just sit around and get stoned out of his mind, just a couple of puffs here and there to keep his mood under control. He really does some crazy, off the wall things and has really bad spurts of temper when he hasn't smoked for a long time. The mood swings were awful and would come on without warning. There were times that he wouldn't be able to sleep for days at a time. He used to get really violent when he was younger, but now we have it under control. It isn't legal here and we are considering moving to where it is. I don't support smoking just to be "cool" or to get high, but I fully support medical marijuana because I have personally seen the effects it can have when used appropriately in moderation. He hasn't had all the nasty side effects that he might have had with prescription meds either and he can sleep at night.

I do agree about the alcohol. I have seen too many uncles end up with cirrhosis from alcoholism.

In my personal situation... - sm

My youngest was 16 when she sustained her first brain injury in a car accident - stole my truck while I was sleeping. She and her friend were plastered. They ended up totaling my truck and she got hurt really bad, skull fracture, bruised heart 6 in sternal fracture, the list goes on. She sustained a significant frontal lobe injury that turned her into an absolute stranger - no lie. It honestly took me 3 years to get to know her again. The daughter I knew was completely erased and I was left with a violent, out of control, destructive person who had no short-term memory, no impulse control, couldn't put two words together or add 2 + 2. Of course, first things the doctors do is want to put her on pills. With this type of injury, it's impossible to find the right combination because there are too many things wrong in different areas of the brain. She started smoking pot and honestly, that was the only thing that could control her volatility and horrific mood swings. No more calls to the police department to come get her. She settled down, starting healing and actually was able to get her high school diploma, but not in regular school where she had to attend a classroom. Her neurologist gave her the thumbs up on smoking pot because he witnessed the benefits of her in her situation. She had been thrown out of several doctors offices here because of how volatile and uncontrollable she was.

Four and a half years later, she sustained a second brain injury in a car accident - this one caused by a drunk driver (not her). This was a re-injury and not as severe, but caused new damage to the frontal lobe. Honestly, I am not a pot advocate, but because of my personal experience and have seen the true benefits of what it can do to help someone like her function as normal as she can, hold down a job, and is now thinking about going to college, I have to say I am for it.

My thinking, tho, is that it should be totally run by the government. The government needs to run all of the dispensaries, oversee all of the growers, and tax the sales. Get rid of these "doctors" who are prescribing it to the every-day pothead. It is a total racket out there. There are "doctors" who for $100 will give you a medical marijuana card. They will tell you to use x, y or z as reasons on the application. These are the abusers of the system, which then makes it impossible for people like my daughter and the elderly couple with cancer a few houses down to be able to receive their "medication." They are forced to go to the "street" drug dealer, which my daughter also does for the couple because they obviously aren't able to do it. It needs to be regulated by the government either at a federal level and/or state level.

I don't understand why everyone seems so - down on using pot for

[ In Reply To ..]
a recreational drug versus alcohol. I would much rather smoke a little weed for the relaxing effects than drink alcohol and literally feel poisoned the next day. I think it should be legal and controlled for any adult person who wants to use it, just like booze is legal.

Agree with all posts for legalizing pot. - Suzy Q

[ In Reply To ..]
I too think that legalizing marijuana is a good idea. I think alcohol should be banned, although we have tried that in the past and it did not work -- prohibition. Alcohol does cause a lot of social problems, huge medical bills, etc, etc. On the other hand, as one poster here pointed out, you hardly ever hear of anyone stoned on pot starting a fight or going out and committing a crime. In the state of Colorado, people are allowed to grow marijuana as a business and and sell it to plants which process it to be sold on the market. Through extensive research, they have created health drinks and foods with marijuana made for the purpose of better health and nutrition. This has added many millions of dollars in tax revenue to the coffers of Colorado.

Now California is facing a severe budget crisis right now with massive lay-offs of teachers, policemen, fire-fighters, etc. This seems like the perfect solution to help California get back on its feet. Of course there are still those super conservative politicians who think marijuana will lead to more crime and to hard crugs. Well I have known of many pot heads in my time and honestly cannot think of one who has turned to hard drugs. I am sure they are out there, but not where I live. Many of the former pot smokers are now school administrators, nurses, firemen, and even politicians.

So if any drug is harmful in today's world and caused huge losses financially, I would have to point to alcohol. But no our society will continue to make this available to all over 21, no matter the cost.
If they legalize it and tax it in NY, - Maggie May

it will be just like tobacco - nobody will be able to afford it. People here are switching to pot because it's cheaper than tobacco (unless you live near an Indian reservation). Tobacco is from $8 to $10 per PACK.
