Power Windows

Posted: Jul 26, 2010

A few days ago my driver's side window does not work.  My friend told me that she had the same problem some years back and had to take it to the dealer and it cost $300.00 to have it fixed.   My stepfather says it may be $400.00.

My inspection is due by August 31st.  Can someone please tell me if it is required to have it fixed for inspection?  I am just sick about this.  The last two years I paid $700.00 and then $500.00 for inspection;  first one needing 4 new tires, etc., brakes, etc.  Last year the engine light would not go out.  They worked for hours and replaced something, and finally it went out.  There were other minor problems in addition to that.  The cost of the labor was ridiculous.

I thought this year would just be the inspection fee.  If I have to put another $400.00 on my charge I will cry.  I am afraid it will be required.  If you are pulled over by police they want you to put the window down.  The last thing they want now is for someone to open the door without being asked to get out.   HELP!    Thanks so much!

My power window went out on the driver's side during a snow storm. The cost to fix was around a $100 at the dearler. Try checking around for replacement motors. It was in a rural town so there was no competion.

Thanks, Pearl (and everyone) - Christine

I just spoke to a man in the service department at Pep Boys. He told me it is not required for inspection, but the source of the problem must be evaluated. It could be one of many things. He said the eval would cost #39.95 plus tax. If it is the motor it will cost an additional $300.00.

Thanks, again everyone! At least now I know I can wait, but I want to have it fixed. I am at the driveup ATM more than I can say!

Why are you getting a yearly inspection on your car? From your post it sounds mandatory, but who is telling you to do this? I don't understand that.

Yearly inspection - Christine

I live in the state of Pennsylvania. You wouldn't get three blocks with an expired inspection sticker. Mine is due by August 31st each and every year. It is the law in Pennsylvania. Otherwise you wouldn't drive.

That explains it. I've never heard of such a thing, but then again I don't live in PA. Guess I'm glad I don't! I certainly wouldn't want to have to go through that every year. That is some harsh law. Good luck with your inspection!

You are correct! PA is very strict about this. EVERY year for as long as I have been alive, and lots of years before that. It is really a worry to so many drivers here. It gets very expensive!

When my brother lived in California some years ago (many) they had NO inspection, which I did not agree with. He had an old klunker and was driving us around on the freeway. I asked him why there was a rope on the door. (I was in the back). He said, "Oh, don't touch that. It's holding the door on!"

Picture it . . . flying along an eight-lane freeway in an old car with the back door tied on! Lord, have mercy!
Thanks for your kind wishes!!! LOL!

I lived in California for 20 years and you had to get your car smogged every other year unless it qualified as being a 'classic'.

I also lived in PA and those checks were nightmare. It could cost you as much as you paid for the car to get it past inspection.

And you can either edit your own post to get your email address out of there or write to the moderator and get them to do it.

It's the same way in the county I live in (Georgia), you have to have an inspection (sm) - GaMT

before you can purchase your tag every year. However, our inspections here are for emmissions which really ticks me off because if they are going to require this then do it right and have the brake lights and blinkers checked also. I see so many people driving around with no brake lights and it is as dangerous, if not more dangerous than checking the dang emissions!!! It also always amazes me at the vehicles traveling down the road with horrible smoke trailing behind them but yet they have an up-to-date tag ... something fishy about that. I'm not sure but I don't think that it is a statewide requirement about the inspection but I could be wrong.

Yep, good ol' PA, glad I moved, remember getting - sm - ECMT

shafted just about every year...$70 for the inspection give or take, then for whatever bone head thing they could find wrong, hated that. I rarely came out under $300 each year. Then moved to Maryland, I was quite happy, only have to get it inspected one time after you register it...though they do require very 2-year emmission inspection. Then moved to VA....yearly inspection here too, but it is a joke, $10-$16 depending on where you go, takes about 15 mins, not hours like in PA, and have yet to get nailed for anything other than a burned out light I had not noticed. One time the guy gave me a hard time about my brakes saying they failed but he had not even taken the tire off to measure the pad, so I made him take the tire off and measure the brake pad, they passed, barely but they passed. Had my DH put on new brakes promptly, not about to pay them for the labor when he knows how to do most car repairs. So not so bad here in VA, pain to have to do it every year of course but at least I can just sit there at the Exxon I take it to and wait for the 15-20 mins it takes and relax while I wait, read, pet the station cat, not a hardship!
There are yearly inspections in MS, too... - Kendra

I have never lived anywhere that required them before here, but they are a joke. It costs $5 and the guy told me that both my 2005 F250 and 2008 Charger are new enough that he really did not need to look at anything other than the VIN to write it down. I don't know if I am relieved to not have to deal with what you all deal with or if I am irritated at having to waste my time and $5 to have them not even look at my car.

Hearing the responses I am surprised to hear the different requirements depending on state. I have never lived anywhere but Pennsylvania, and I am used to having to go through this every year. I am used to it, don't like it a bit. I worry about the expense every year. A $5.00 inspection charge would be unheard of here. I think the base charge is approximately $26.00, and that's if nothing is wrong. I am shocked that two places today told me the window does not need to be fixed to pass. The one service manager said "Believe it or not, that's one thing they don't make you do." Then he said some years ago it would not have passed without being repaired.

Sometimes they get dirt in them. They're inside the arm rest, but if you don't know how to get to them, it can be a hassle. I think you have to take the door panel off (can't remember). This happened to us. Thank heavens, DH grew up taking cars apart. LOL

I've lived in Minnesota my whole life and never knew such a thing as yearly car inspections even existed!! I would think with all the crazy winter conditions (which equals crazy winter drivers) that something like this would be required. Not that i'm complaining about not having to spend the money. The most I worry about it a $30 oil change ever few months, and even that gets me stressed out! I guess I have it pretty good...

Always something - Been there

[ In Reply To ..]
In a previous car I owned that happened to me too. My window was fine and then all of a sudden one day it would no longer go down. This was an older car and I didn't have to have inspections so i don't know about that part...but I was pulled over a time or two in that car :-| The officers that pulled me over never said anything to me about having to get it fixed, but when they came to my window I just very slowly opened it a bit and let them know that my window was broken and wouldn't go down. They never said anything. Hopefully you don't have that problem....and depending on what state you live in or something maybe it would be different. Hope you get the info you need!

I have to tell you all that this is already getting old! The other day I forgot and pulled up to the ATM, and then later to the mailbox at our Post Office and darn near threw my arm through the glass. It's kinda like looking in the refrigerator 100 times a night when you already know what's there. I keep pushin' that darn button and NOTHING! GEEZ!

The Power To Say NO Is Huge.Nov 01, 2010
As few as 41 senators, which could represent as little as 12.3% of the U.S. population, can make a filibuster happen.  The Republicans have been using the filibuster continually, even filibustering bills they previously were FOR, just because they believe it makes Dems look bad.  The Republicans currently have 41 senators and block everything.  The Democrats have 57 senators, so by the rules they cannot override the Republican obstructionism.   ...
