Need a dog food that will fill the dog up but keep weight down

Posted: Mar 2, 2011

Is it a full moon or something? Now it's the dog! She get 2 meals a day, a half can of dry food and half can of wet for breakfast. in the evening, she gets a full can of dry food, a half can of wet, and 1/2 can of veggies. She acts like she is starving. She paws 'daddy' for more during her meal times, whines, walks around the kitchen and under the kitchen table after eating looking for a wayward piece of dry dog food or hoping we dropped a piece of our dinnerwithout  knowing it, sits by the dish and cries. She just started this last week.

She weighs 106 pounds now (black lab)! Too heavy. We need to get her weight down in a way that we can cut her food and she would feel full. She also drinks gallons of water a day. We've been feeding her Beneful for about 2 months. It's the only dry food she would eat.

Her last vet check in Jan. was A+. Perfect health except for the weight, so she's not sick.

Any ideas on any good filling food? We were going broke buying other food she won't touch. We did find a food that lists meat/fish and not many grains in the ingredients, but it costs $48 and that's a big ouch!

Oh no! Throw away that food! She likes it because Beneful is like the Twinkie diet for dogs. :-(

Our Golden breeder suggested Flint River Ranch (practically insisted) for our dog. Her family has been breeding Goldens for 45 years and have had a lot of winning show dogs, so I took her advice. My "puppy" is now 3 years old and about 70 pounds. We feed him once a day. Flint River Ranch isn't sold in stores, and they ship to your door - fresh from the factory. There were one of the few dog food manufacturers that did not have a recall a couple of years ago.

I also heard that Eagle Pack is good for larger dogs too. That one also wasn't on the recall list.

I know you said perfect vet check, but... - momofjacks

did that include blood work for thyroid disease or diabetes? I can't remember which it is, but the symptoms of constant thirst (specifically that symptom!) and hunger along with the inability to lose or maintain weight are typically symptoms of an endocrine problem in dogs. If your vet visit didn't include blood work specifically for either one of these issues, and normal vet checkups don't include blood work for these, I would suggest calling and making an appointment. Just my experience and opinion. Good luck to you and your doggy.

Good advice... also this helped my dog - sm

My Samoyed (5 years old) had a weight problem. He was obsessed with food it seemed. He snatched food whenever he could from the garbage, off the counter and from in the pantry if the door was left open. The vet even wanted to enroll him in a trial for FDA approval of a weight loss drug for use in canines.

His lab work was normal and he was otherwise healthy, but very sluggish and lethargic. Another issue was an itchy skin allergy in my other 2 dogs.

I found a great recipe to make my own soft food that is very filling and made with all human-grade food. My dogs absolutely love it. It contains oatmeal which seldom causes skin allergies. It's very cost effective. The recipe also calls for canned salmon or ground beef/turkey(no chicken as the vet said that can also cause skin allergies), veggies such as broccoli, peas or green beans as well as cottage cheese and boiled eggs. I use this with Natures Recipe grain-free kibble that contains sweet potato and salmon.

The difference in all the dogs' energy levels is really noticable and the Samoyed has gone from 118 to 103 in a little less than a year.

The homemade recipe takes only a few minutes to prepare about twice a week. My 16 year old son does it unsupervised as part of his chore list for his allowance.

Fling River Ranch is a Great premium dog food. I used Dry/Water for years, until I realized that the cost was waaay more per pound than if I bought chicken or ground beef or other regular people meat.

Grocery store dog food and pet store dog food is mostly road kill or carcases of dead animals that might contain meds they were giving.

To fill up your poor hungry lab, add some canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and green beans. It fills them up without adding pounds. Be aware - pumpkin makes their poop orange.

Lab = hungry all the time - LK

[ In Reply To ..]
Labs are eating machines. They don't regulate their own intake like many other breeds. I think experimenting with dog foods is a good idea, but it may be unrealistic to think that your lab will ever act like it's not starving. My lab is the same - acts like she's famished all the time, and always has. I just follow my vet's advice to give her a total of 3-4 cups of food a day (Science Diet dry) and that's it. Almost no treats. She's at a perfect weight, 75 pounds, and acts like a puppy at the age of almost 7. So what if she acts hungry? She's a lab and they always act hungry. It's more important that we preserve their health by keeping their weight down than worry that they act hungry, in my opinion.

when it comes to food. The only time he isn't thinking about food is when he is sleeping. Come to think of it, he may dream of eating. LOL.

He always acts hungry, but he's not. He just lives to eat and would be huge if I let him eat whenever he wants. I give him a stuffed Kong to chew every day, and I think that may take his mind off his hunt for crumbs of food on the floor for a bit.

Give her plenty of exercise too - that should trim her down in no time. :-)

them anymore. She used to love them.

She also gets sick and throws up if she eats a bone. To me, that's abnormal but she's been that way since a pup.

The neighbor's labs don't get sick from bones and his one dog is from the same 'family'. We don't give her bones but she did grab a small ham steak one from the garbage (never used to go after garbage) and practically swallowed it whole. Didn't know it because she was so quick but during the night, threw it up.

But she was never like this. This just started last week. - Backwards Typist

I think I will take the advice of the other poster and get her blood checked. Her disposition of a happy active dog is now that of a whining, sad, hungry pooch.

She wasn't overweight until a year ago. We just thought it was because she was not getting as much exercise because of the weather at that time, but she has gained even more weight since then and she doesn't want to play catch or even chase rabbits. Because of her weight, she has also started "wheezing" when laying down and she snores so loud, I thought it was DH at first!

She turns 5 in May, so she's not that old. DH takes her for walks every day and she did lose 2 pounds, but I'm afraid she put it all back on again.

Please, please, please see your vet - momofjacks

I worked in various animal care fields before pursuing MT. I am begging you to make a list of the changes that you have noticed, every single one of them, and please speak with your vet, ask about appropriate blood work to be done or imaging if necessary, make sure that you stress that these changes have just been in the last year or so. Every thing you can think of that has been different with your dog, write it down. Take the list with you, make a copy for your vet, and verbally go over the list and make sure that the veterinarian sees, hears, and understands what is on that list. A good veterinarian WILL take the time to listen and address the needs of your pet.
sorry, meant changes this last week or so, not year. N/M - momofjacks

re: Dog food - lab mom

[ In Reply To ..]
I have to first of all disagree with the poster who says labs are eating machines. This is my thought on your dog's new behavior. The dog is bored. This breed is a working dog and needs to be stimulated by more than an occasional walk and some play. They need to "work" or will develop strange behavior, such as overeating, digging, sleeping too much, getting destructive.

I've bred and raised labs for more than 30 years. My current dogs train on a backyard course with a variety of challenges ( I am fortunate enough to have a very large back yard) and 4 days a week they also hitch a ride with my sister and "work" on a horse ranch.

My dogs are svelt, shiny, very powerful and very muscular. They are the most beautiful labs! They are good dogs too. They also "volunteer" at a veterans home every other Sunday and go "visiting".

These dogs are so intelligent they seem to understand words, not just commands! I love them so much as does the rest of my family. They baby sit my grandson when he's over, following him around and playing gently with him.

We take them to the river park also and they retrive balls and duck toys. (They wear live jackets!)

My suggestion would be to keep this dog stimulated and busy. I know some people will say that dogs get used to their environments, and this is true to a degree, but a responsible and loving pet owner will take into consideration the breed. Research the breed and commit to doing your best to do right by the animals that you are taking home. A dog will eventually "give in" to an occasional walk, but like I said, other behaviors will appear.

I hope you at least think about it.

By the way: We use Blue Buffalo dog food.

Tell me about intelligence! Mine even knows how to spell lately - Backwards Typist

We had to find new words for ride/r-i-d-e, going/go, truck/t-r-u-c-k, treat/t-r-e-a-t, and others. If I am talking to DH about someone coming over later, she starts barking her head off because she thinks someone is here now. When we are talking, you can see her ears perk up and she watches every word/mouth movement and you can see that she's processing it for a meaning.

When we used to play ball, all we'd have to do is say ball and she'd get it. We used to hide it and tell her to "find ball" and she would.

One thing we can't get her to do is swim or even get in a kiddie pool. She hates water. She refuses to go out when it rains. She used to love playing in the snow but this year, she wouldn't go off the porch or play in it.

We just don't know how else to get her to play anymore. The only excitement she shows is when we say ride or truck. Then she jumps 6 feet straight up in the air, ready to go for that ride. She was also trained to 'go pee' before the ride and she does every time. Love it.

At Christmas, she was disappointed that she didn't get a gift to open like the kids, that when she was given her gift (a package of rawhide bones), she opened it and carried that bag around to show everyone so proud of her gift. I video taped it but it's so long, I couldn't upload it to my FB page or YouTube and it broke my heart because it was so cute.

I'll check on Blue Buffalo food. As for the stimulation, she won't play anymore so I don't know how else to stimulate her.

re:Backward typist - lab mom

Fear of play is one of those behaviors that develops. If it is a retriever dog that doesn't want to get in water, that's a negative behavior. Try rewarding her as you coax her off the porch, further and further into the yard. Use a Kong ball, you can put treats it it, throw it out and walk beside her out into the yard and re-teach her to play.

Never force though! Try sitting a way out in the yard with the door open, occasionally call to her. I bed after a while she'll start to wander over, especially if you take a favorite toy.

You can re-teach her to get in to a pool also, gentle coaxing with a reward. Put her in a very shallow pool or body of water on a leash, giving little treats for the longer she stays at your side without trying to escape.

You can re-teach an old dog new tricks. It takes a good effort, but the rewards is so worth it.

A dog that spells huh? That's so awesome. They are really smart and really bless us, enriching our lives!

around the house if she doesn't get her way with 'daddy'. If she is not with him 24/7, she gets mad and will not look at him. She will lay with her back to him and ignore everything he says to her. She has him wrapped around her paw. In the evening, he cannot sit on a chair to watch TV, he has to sit on the floor with her. I find it funny 'cause he's the one that 'made' her this way. I warned him when she was a pup that he had to be the boss, not her. Now he's stuck and even if I tell him how to change her behavior, he doesn't follow through. He doesn't understand 'dog talk' and gets frustrated when she wants something and he can't figure it out. He'll ask me every time or she'll look at me as if to say, "tell him what I want!" She does listen to me and I don't have any behavior problems with her.

Maybe I should teach her how to talk. Words like 'wide (ride)', 'water', 'wood (food)', 'treat' (wheat), 'out' (woof), then DH will understand. LOL

BTW, we do have a kiddie pool for her. That was my idea for summer grooming since we could never get her in a bathtub or other body of water.

Thanks so much for your ideas. I will try them.

That's a good size lab. I have a little black lab - she's 62 lbs. Before her I had a dalmatian that was always hungry. The vet told me she was overweight and said to put her on light/senior dog food. When I went to the pet food store the woman working there recommended the light/senior version of the dog food I was currently using - but half as much and supplementing with a can of no salt added green beans. My dalmatian lost about 15 lbs and was sleek until she died - loved her green beans. For some reason my black lab doesn't like them but loves Fresh Pet mixed with Costco brand dry. She doesn't seem to have a weight or eating issue. It's worth a try - canned beans are cheap - I think I gave her half a can a day.
