My 'baby' is graduating from high school this weekend

Posted: Jun 2, 2011

I can not believe my baby is graduating high school.  This May my two boys turned 18 and 21 and now in September they will both be in community college.  I am so probud of them coming this far but it is bitter sweet.  They both have Asperger's syndrome (very high functioning autism) and although they are growing up, not sure if they will ever leave home.  They are good boys and I have done all I can to help them succeed in the world and there are new life lessons every day.  If the day comes that they do leave, I will be happy in that they can go out in the world and survive on their own but sad to see them go, but more happy that I know they will be able to take care of themselves when I am gone.  I do think the younger one will be able to do it some day, but worried more about the older one, although he seems to be getting a handle on what he wants to do with his life, so baby stems encourage me.  Just had to boast.  Feeling very proud this week and wanting to scream it from the rooftops, but since scared of heights, this is close enough.  Lot of years of lessons ahead, but we have made it this far so far!  I am proud of my children.

I say you should pat yourself on the back as many times as you want! Congratulations :) You must be an amazing parent, your sons are lucky to have you.

Congratulations Mom. - They grow up so fast, dont they?

You have every reason to be proud of them and of yourself. I am curious about how each of them views their future and why you are more concerned about the elder son. Also, I am not making the connection between the encouragement you feel now that he seems to be getting a handle on that and the reference to baby stems. Is he a candidate for that therapy?

No one can know what the future holds for their children and the concerns you express here are shared by most parents. I worry about the world my son (age 33 now) will face after I am gone and what a different place it is than the one I grew up in. At times I feel ill-equipped to advise, guide or influence him since the changes have been so drastic between the mid 1900s and the millenium. The following is a poem I have referred to many times during my parenting years that has brought me much comfort in this regard. I hope it can do the same for you.

On Children
Khalil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

my first thought was that she meant to say - wimt

baby steps encourage her, not baby stems. To the OP, as I am sure you know, all parents have concerns for their children as they grow and hope they will live a successful and enjoyable and safe and smart, etc. life. I cannot imagine the magnification of those feeling when you have a child/children with a disability. I wish you and your boys the best in their lives as adults. You sound like you have a positive attitude and that is a wonderful thing.

Thanks. That makes sense. - nm

My 18yo Son Wants To Drop Out Of High School And Get His GED.Mar 10, 2011
I understand why he wants to drop out.  He and his girlfriend of nearly three years broke over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Basically, he found out that she had slept with two of his supposed good friends and also tried to get with a third.  I'm not sure why she did this as my son treated her like gold.  He followed her around like a little puppy.  Did everything she told him to do.  He all but stopped attending family functions because she wa ...

My 40th High School ReunionMar 26, 2012
I haven't been back to a reunion since my 10th one. Now, I'm debating whether to go because so many of my classmates are successful, two published authors, military officers, doctors, lawyers.  Very small graduating class.  Many of them have taken early retirement, live on Hilton Head, SC, etc. I don't want to tell them my pay has been cut in half and I work for an Indian company. Is that pathetic? I would also add that I was the geeky, awkward, nose-in-a-book, dateless, ...

Need Idea For Get Well Gift For High School Girl....Nov 20, 2009
My son, who is in his mid 20s, is assistant coach for the high school girls' soccer team.  The young lady, who is team captain, has injured her ACL severely and probably won't be playing anymore but shows up for every game of course.  They all are getting her a little  inexpensive "get well" to give her tonight.  My son has no earthly idea what to get her and frankly, neither do I.  He wants to keep the  gift very generic, so as to not let the young lady g ...

Baby Einstein Giving Refunds/school Kids Oct 27, 2009
I just thought that was interesting and wanted to share.  I found this story in my email inbox.  Apparently, Baby Einstein does not make your baby smart and is just a way to keep them entertained or as stated in the article from Yahoo... "According to the article, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under two years old stay away from watching screens. In the letter threatening Disney with a class-action lawsuit for "deceptive advertising," public health lawyers ...

Oh, Those Good Ole Days Of High School Detention. Spent A Lot Of Time There.Feb 03, 2011
The post below made me think bad, and every time I do I laugh.  Now, I was not a bad kid but I spent more than my fair share of time in detention for the least little thing.  I would go to sleep in class and get detention.  Then I would go sleep in detention.  Our high school in Atlanta was grades 8-12, very large.  So you may have had 50 or more kids in detention.  Usually, the teacher monitoring detention did not even know you.  Sometimes I would have someon ...

White Power Signs At Texas High School GameFeb 18, 2015
"It's just so sad that kids have to take it to that level," she said.  What level is acceptable, I wonder.  Once again, some racism is okay, okay to think it, just don't hold up signs.  Okay to say it, just don't let the media publish it--Mississippi legislature. In my hometown which is say 70% white, 20% black and 10% Hispanic (sort of a guess), I am fairly certain these "kids" would have been de-signed by other fans, the administration or their very o ...

Any Ideas For 25th Anniversary Weekend?May 03, 2012
We are taking a week's vacation at the beach with our children and grandchildren in June.  We split the cost of a beach house.  Everyone has a nice place to stay on the beach, much cheaper when cost is divided. Our 25th anniversary is coming up in October, and my husband and I would like to take a vacation without the kids.  It will only be a 3-4 day stay over a weekend because of limited time off for both of us, and of course limited funds since we will be paying for everyt ...
