Luanne Rice, Author

Posted: Nov 7, 2013

I just read my first Luanne Rice novel. Boy, I loved it. "Secret Hour" is the name of it. I never, ever pay full price for books--I always buy them from garage sales, thrift shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc., so I'm often "behind the times" in terms of authors, but that doesn't matter to me. Anyone else familiar with this author? What was your favorite book of hers? I was also wondering if she tends to use the same characters in any of her books.;

My favorite author! - Anony

I've read most of her books, and loved them all. It's been a while, because I ran out of the ones I could get free online from the library. I especially liked the "beach" ones, and the characters in each series do sometimes repeat, but that doesn't affect the storyline. You don't have to read them in order at all.

Her newest book, "The Lemon Orchard" was slightly disappointing and predictable, but I finished it. I tend to return books before finishing if I don't like them, but this one wasn't up to her usual standard.

Thanks! - See Msg--Question

I do intend to keep my eye out for her books. Since I never, ever pay full price, I'm a little limited--most of her books won't be "on the shelves" in paperback, but that kind of makes it fun, like a little treasure hunt.

One of my favorite treasure hunts was V.C. Andrews books. I didn't find out they were using the same characters until I had already read a couple, but I still enjoyed the books. I don't think the V.C. Andrews ones are a series, per se, but I do think it would have been better had I read them "in order."

I don't want to get involved in a "series." I think all you do is end up paying full price each time.

When you say "free online" is that for a Kindle-type of thing? I don't have a Kindle and I am not really planning on getting one.

Yes, I do have a Kindle, but - anony

I borrow most of the books for my kindle (and audio books for my MP3) free from the library. I bought a Kindle a couple years ago when my local library began charging around $6 for parking and I decided to boycott them.

But if you aren't picky, you can "buy it used" from Amazon.com Most of the Luanne Rice books there are 1-cent, but you have to pay postage. The only time I buy new books is if they're for gifts. Used is fine with me.
Funny you mention Amazon - OP

I went on the Amazon site before I saw this post. I found that I can get a book for 1 cent, plus shipping--all totaled, came to $3.98. That is quite good.

I may still go poke around "in person" at the Goodwill, garage sales, thrift shops just for the thrill of the hunt, and who knows, I may find another author I had never read. And the 50 cents or so per book doesn't hurt, either.....um, but don't ask what kind of gas I may have spent on my hunt...LOL.
Another of my all-time faves - anony

Bet you would LOVE books by Kristin Hannah.
and another - similar author. . .
[ In Reply To ..]
Debbie Macomber. I enjoyed Kristin Hannah's books. I only have time to read before going to sleep and I don't like to read anything heavy, depressing or violent. These sorts of books are perfect for before sleep reading.

I too love the hunt for cheap books. My library has a twice yearly book sale and the paperbacks are usually $1-2. We also have a locally owned chain of used book/magazine stores; I could spend hours in there!

I've read all of Debbie Macomber, and am waiting for the third book in her new Rose Harbor series, and have started on Robyn Carr.

I bought a little MP3 player and download audio books from the library. With a $12 "boom cube" I listen to my books while driving - since I hate ear buds and they're illegal when you drive. The little boom cube is about an inch square and rechargeable.

I've gotten a stack of "books" from them waiting in the wings. The problem is, library books expire, so I have to read them first!
Another GREAT site for free Kindle books - just passing through

Another great site is One Hundred Free Books. I find that they have a better selection than BookBub, and you can go through the newest books and then go into categories as well. One day last week, I went in to the site and ended up downloading 23 books! LOL

"Not planning on getting a Kindle" - OK, but ...

You don't have to get a Kindle to read Kindle books.

Really, you don't. Amazon provides the Kindle reader software for PC and the app for tablets and phones absolutely free. Yes, FREE. No obligation.

And, not only do authors make their books available for free as promotions ... hundreds every day, if not thousands... Amazon also offers a bazillion public domain books at no charge. I just searched on Amazon for "free Kindle books" and there were almost 58K.

In addition, there are several publishers that make their Kindle format books available for free.

The Kindle reader is super-nice, too. It is just like looking at a printed book, photographs and all.

Thanks - Maybe Some Day

LOL, I don't have that type of phone, but it's by choice. I prefer a book over sitting at my computer. I appreciate the info you gave me--I actually did not know that Kindle wasn't just the hand-held book thingie.

I have a girlfriend who SWORE she would never get the Kindle thing, and she has one and wouldn't trade it for anything. I can see the appeal---it's very portable, well-lit, etc.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the responses! - OP

Thanks to you all so much for the information. I can't wait to go on a hunt. I'm going to start at the Goodwill. They have shelves and shelves of used books for maybe 50 cents.

Hi all!  First,  I have a question about rice. Has anyone ever had lavender rice?  If so could you describe the flavor of it? I'm a big basmati rice fan, but keep eying the lavender rice also, but it only comes in a rather large package and is pricey. If anyone knows what it tastes like, I would love the feedback. Now, the recipe.  It's for a complete german sauerbraten dinner and is cheap, easy to make, and is fantastic if you are a fan of german cuisine.  1 ...
