Living in Alaska

Posted: Jul 24, 2013

Wasn't sure which board to put this on but am wondering if there are any MTs who live in and work from Alaska?  Thought has crossed my mind to maybe move there and am wondering about the weather, cost of living, etc.  Appreciate any info from someone who lives up there.  :)  Thanks

Do not live there but just returned a week ago - from the Land of the Midnight Sun

My daughter asked why I did back to back vacations, just coming home this Sunday from there and I told her Alaska is really open about 3 months a year. It is really a seasonal place because of the extreme snow/cold and lots of things shut down, restaurants, Denali park, only the very hardy that I can tell want to live there, pioneer spirit where loads of people hunt and fish for their food supply. The cost is much more expensive, gas I noticed there was $3.94 a gallon whereas when I left from my home it was running $3.30+. Anyone a resident there (think after a year) gets money from the state because of the pipe line with oil flowing from it. Last year everyone got about $800+ and the year before a little over $1,000. No sales tax, very good perks about taxes but loved visiting, just would not have to do things such as hooking up vehicles overnight to prevent them from freezing up, even tires get to where they do not work sometimes due to excessive cold and they have to thaw. I had no nighttime to speak of the entire time I was there (10 days) and really was worn out when returning but then again there was a 4 hour difference in time and hard trip to make travel wise. The place is HUGE. We bought for 2 cents an acre and paid 7.5 billion for it so do the math! We had people in our group who were on gluten free diet. Hard to find a store in Achorage who had their food, had to shop in regular smaller stores and when going to Denali there was absolutely no store for them there and they had to stockpile 3 days of food prior to going. Wilderness comes to mind, beautiful endless mountains but being as I like convenience not for me living there.

Thanks so much for your replies. I had thought that if working for a national company it might not be as possible as working for a local hospital system, etc., there. Appreciate the info;probably won't move but it was nice to think about! :)

This was my second trip to Alaska, having gone - about 5 years ago and

and did not see the animals this time like I did last. Last time scores of eagles sitting in the tops of trees, not 1 this time, numerous grizzle bears in Denali, only 1 bear far off in the park this time, moose all along the roads, 1 only this time. I have no explanation for the lack of animals. I met 1 couple who spent $$$$ going to Kodiac and never saw 1 bear there. It was really a hard trip to make, long, long hours flying as I had to fly clear across the country with the exception of 1 state, 4 hours difference in Alaska time and EST so after about 3 days am finally getting my bearings again. While the country in the lower 48s was socked in with heat, the day prior to my returning (which actually was this past Sunday, not a week ago as stated earlier, remember trying to get my bearings back)we all were wearing jackets as we were in 30 degree something weather in Denali Park. I did not pack a jacket, tried packing lighter but knew once I got there I would buy some outerwear as I did the first time visit. It is a beautiful state, just majestic and I would definitely say spend some time there if you ever get the chance. You would never regret it.

I have a sister in Barrow-sm - anon

Honestly, it is a completely different world. Where she is even more so. It seems that much depends on where you are located. She depends on Amazon for many things but occasionally finds things that are not shippable to AK. When things are shippable from other places, the shipping costs are higher. Anything not sent priority mail takes an inordinate amount of time to arrive there.

Naturally, the cost of living is significantly higher. If you have a job that is based there, the wages compensate for it. If you are working for national MTSO, the wage situation would not be in your benefit. There are many places I would like to visit in AK (not Barrow, sorry sis) but I do not think I could handle many of the things that come with the climate, the short days, etc. Granted, I live in NM now and I like bright sunshine so it is almost a given.

Hello fellow New Mexican! - nice to see someone else in the SW

Here's What I Love About Living In AmericaJan 05, 2011
Whatever side of the aisle you're on, today was a perfect example of why this country is so great - the peaceful and respectful transfer of power.  I'm reminded of this every time there is a swearing in - felt the same way when Obama was sworn in as President and Bush waved as he got on the plane to leave DC.  We are so lucky to live in a country where this can happen without the threat of people getting killed and riots in the streets.  I know the peaceful and respectfu ...
