Just saw something VERY interesting on the news

Posted: Aug 24, 2010

Just watched part of the ABC evening news and I really feel for parents nowadays; having to buy garbage bags, toliet paper and other "non school supplies," because the some of the school districts are hoarding the money they received from the government.  Its time for some of these superintendents and the "mucky mucks," like other people in the "corportate world" to see how it is to live in the shoes of one of their employees  -- Undercover Boss should be a good show for a long time :)

I balked at having to buy paper and pencils - momof3

[ In Reply To ..]
Just last week, my 10yo tells me he needs school supplies. He says he needs a special notebook for writing class, folders and pencils. I can understand the folders, but back in my day, the school supplied tablets and pencils. When I told him he just wanted "special" paper and pencils, he denied it. He said when they had "move-up day" at the end of the school year, his new teacher told him he would need to bring these supplies because the school didn't have the funds.

I don't get it. If they don't have the funds for the basics, what are they spending my tax dollars on? The classrooms all have "erase boards" to use instead of chalk boards. Apparently, these boards are hooked into the teachers' laptops (which each teacher has) and whatever they put on the computer comes up on the screen. It's some kind of new-fantangled overhead projector.

I'm curious if the school featured on ABC supplies each teacher with a laptop. I think it's time to get back to basics.

School supplies for 2 kids already at 150 bucks and they want more stuff - Sheila

[ In Reply To ..]
We bought the supplies (paper, binders, pens, glue, 12 boxes of pencils plus more) on the list (7th and 8th grader). Now here it is the 2nd day of school and now they need more dividers, another folder and a 4 gig flash drive. Because 2 of the binders they wanted were the 3-4 inch, those were 10 bucks each! Some of the teachers have even been picky enough to write the brand they want. It is just nuts. By now, they should just need either 1 big binder, dividers and paper or a folder with paper and of course pens and pencils for each class.

Our school district wants - sm

each student to have a graphic calculator for 7th graders that retails for 99 bucks at Target, higher at some other chains. I bought one for my son 2 years ago,who LOST it last year. Now, my daughter needs this as she is in 7th grade this year. Also, the district wants computer paper, hand sanitizer, facial tissues and extra pencils to "share".

Same here - just spent $160 on my two kids - sm - ECMT

[ In Reply To ..]
totally nuts, pencils, pens, folder, one teacher wanted 20 glue sticks, what are they doing stiffing the stuff? I got 6, 20 was nuts. My 7th grader needed 3 sets of colored pencils as 2/3 classes they are for the teacher was "collecting" them, why does he/she need 150+ packages of colored pencils, we not talking art class, english, science and History I think. The list was really outrageous this year and our county has the Smart boards too which really are great, I presume the school supplies the teachers the laptops. Hand santizer, tissues, ziplock bags. I really wonder if some of the stuff ends up on ebay, just seems so excessive some of it. My 7th grader's list had brands specified too, though I did not look that hard and got what was available which was not those brands, tough noogies there. My daughter has to lug all her stuff with her from class to class pretty much as they only have 2 mins to switch classes, not enough time to go back to the locker, switch notebooks, etc. Her backpack weighs about 15 pounds.....at least it feels that way.

salaries and pensions - deenibeeni

[ In Reply To ..]
Teacher salaries are a huge chunk. The pensions are also huge...I was listening to a radio program the other day where a guy was saying that in his state the pension fund was invested in the stock market, so if it took a dive they had to make up the difference by hitting up the taxpayers. Again. Once for the salaries in the first place, another time to make up the shortfall on pensions guaranteed for life.

Nice work if you can get it.

School supplies - travelinMT

We never had to do this in California. My grandkids moved to Texas 5 years ago, they have lists in all the main stores; target, walmart, staples, etc. They are on a big rack filed by name of the school and the grade along with all the supplies they are required to have. I though it was crazy until I just talked to a friend of mine whose daughter is going to school here in Cali, and yep, there is a list for them now too.

I too have a lot of supplies to buy; however, we have - sm

Back to school supplies - sheepwhisperer

[ In Reply To ..]
We too had to buy all of the extras when we sent our kids back (we have 3) and just supplies alone was almost 200 bucks. I don't know about where you all live but I am from a very small town in west central Illinois and our school is very small (there is approximately 80 students in the whole elementary school) As of right now, the state owes our school district over $250,000 from last year. They have had to cut the breakfast program because of no state funding. I could go on and on. Although we as parents are all having to "pick up the slack" so to speak, I guarntee that at least here, it is not going into the higher up's pockets. It is a shame that we can spend several million dollars a day helping out other countries but we can't pay for our schools to teach our children. What is this world coming to??

I don't understand it - "school in a box" is under $600 - mtstudent

[ In Reply To ..]
For around $600 you can get "school in a box" from a publisher. Some like Calvert even include the crayons and craft supplies. For the other ones you basically need a pencil. Why don't the districts use these programs and just order one for each kid?

Those prices are for the private market too. I'm sure a district purchasing it for hundreds or thousands of students could get it at least 40-60% off those prices.

Eighty percent of my township taxes go to the school district. - And I'm not sure what I get for that.

[ In Reply To ..]
The district is always crying poor, yet they also trumpet the grants they receive for things like laptops for students. I had one foster son in public school and my sons in Catholic school; three teens at the same time. The Catholic high school asked for far less, and they worked on a MUCH tighter budget.

Now that my kids are in college, the supplies are cheaper! Of course, that's offset by tuition and books, but the actual supply requirements are much more realistic.

I think these school districts basically come up with a Wish List when it comes to supplies. They act like kids waiting in line to see Santa. "I want, I want, I want . . . " They could manage with far less than they ask for.

My post - OP

I remember when my soon to be 30-year-old daughter was starting kindergarten in Northern Illinois. I was a single mother at the time and was about floored when I saw the cost for milk at $150 a year. Her brother, who is 3 years older, did not have that kind of bill for milk in kindergarten and even in third grade, his milk bill was a lot less. My granddaughter is just starting kindergarten in the Flint, MI area and I dread to think about what my daughter and SIL had to provide. I know that I am definitely out of the "loop," but I have to agree with one of the posters who stated that "we need to get back to the basics." I feel for the families that have been hit by hard economic times and then having to go out and purchase items that they may not be able to afford.

What I am wondering and this is just my brain meandering would be is "year round schooling" a good idea? Many years ago, when I lived in Las Vegas, they did that. Kind of threw me for a loop, because one of the neighbor kids was home in the middle of October. I thought she was sick, but she said no that she was on her break. I think they had like a month or so off at the time and then would go back. Another thing too, are "the breaks" that are allowed. The kids basically start school in late August/early September. They then have "institute days/conference days" when they are off throughout the year, about 3-4 days at Thanksgiving, around 2 weeks at "holiday time," time off for weather conditions and then we are in Spring Break where it is another week and then finally back to the end of school.

I have a sister and niece who are teachers and my other 2 sisters are school secretaries and love what they do and even the sisters who are secretaries are paid during the time they are off. Again, I do feel for these families that have to spend so much money in order to provide their childen with what they believe is the best education possible.

I apologize for this being so long.

With the amount of money the districts get - mtstudent

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it's ridiculous the parents have to even buy a pencil. They need to cut the layers of administration in every district.

Each school should be able to shop the private market for textbooks too. I can't believe the differences between what schools pay that buy hundreds of them versus how cheap they are on the private market.

The real problem is that.... - Kendra

[ In Reply To ..]
The lists are so ridiculous that many parents end up not buying anything, which is why, for Kindergarten, the school is asking parents to buy 6 reams of copy paper for each child. I think that they figure that if 3 or 4 kids' parents actually buy it, then they are set. The several boxes of pencils are so that I can supply all of the kids whose parents will not buy any. It is ridiculous, but from what I see, most parents buy what they feel like buying--you want 20 glue sticks, I'll buy 3, sort of a thing. I intend to buy what my kids will use. It is not my responsibility to provide for other children--I already do that through property taxes. I also do not want the teacher doling out my son's things. He can take what he needs each day, from home.

kindergarten supplies! - K-mom

[ In Reply To ..]
My oldest is just about to start kindergarten and I could not believe the supplies he needs! besides a mat for rest time he is expected to have notebooks and three ring binders along with pencils, markers, etc. Why in the world does he need notebooks at this age, they can't even write yet! And binders? for all the homework they will be having?! Then of course we were asked to get tissue, CRACKERS, markers, paint, etc. all to share. I can't wait to see what 1-12 is gonna hold is he's needing this for kindergarten! Anyone else have a kid going into K with these needs?!
