I feel hope tonight

I have had hypothyroidism for some years now, since the late 80s and have been tried back and forth on different medicines. I have met people who told me they went on medication and immediately their weight came back to normal, never happened to me. I have tried all things hoping something would take, diets, exercise. My appetite has waned while my weight has steadily been climbing. I right now do not like me in my own skin. I had some indepth tests done at the endocrinologist's office a couple of months ago, found I am somewhat insulin resistant and the T3 and T4 are a little off but today the physician told me she has other things we can tried and prescribed metformin. She said no draw backs at all to that, people have lost weight and the cost is just about a give away it is so inexpensive (120 tablets for not even $3.00 for me). This is the first step and then she said secondly if that does not work for me we can do combo of metformin and phenteramine and that should really work even faster. I wanted to lose some weight so much I had even looked into the lap band but at my age did not want to kill myself in the process of losing weight and there were some complications that kind of frightened me. Tomorrow I start hopefully a new episode in my life and I am really excited and feeling hope now. ;

since 1995 at least diagnosed...had a goiter and did not even realize it. I have been on synthetic and natural thyroid supplements and continue to gain weight at about 10 lb a year, but rarely eat...maybe once a day...with no appetite whatsoever. I don't eat sweets, and have resorted to as much "natural" foods as possible, considering budget and state of economy, and weight will just not budge. If yours helps, I may consider it, as well...even though I detest doctors as they are so condescending saying it is all my fault for over-eating, lack of exercise, etc. They don't live in this body...they have no idea what they are talking about unless they have to deal with it. I had been on Synthroid and was changed from that a couple of months ago. My appetite has also gone out the window except told hubby a few weeks ago I wish I could just gorge on any and everything I would love to, cakes, puddings, pies, ice cream and the like and then maybe you could say well it is how she eats. That is not the case as you well know and that old just pushing yourself away from the table is not playing a part here. The difference with the physician now is she is an endocrinologist, not your regular run of the mill physician and she is not saying like run 50 miles a day and you can just lose the weight. Instead we talke today about this option (I had heard about this but had forgotten until she brought it up again) and then the combo, hoping to do that as a backup if the metformin did not work good for me. She also said since I have no appetite for breakfast, to at least eat a nutrition bar for breakfast, said could eat that once or twice a day if I wanted but she seems to think this will really help and her assistant told me she knows of patients this works with so will have follow up for all and keeping my fingers crossed but like I said, hope is here tonight.

What helped me with my metabolism - anon

I don't have thyroid issues, but I was overweight and on my way to diabetes and probably thyroid issues. What helped me the most was to change the timing of my food. I used to skip breakfast, have coffee or tea, and eat a large meal early afternoon and another large meal after work (after 7 pm). Well that is where I was gaining.

I still eat 2 meals a day, but I eat a large meal around 10 am and my other meal between 5 and 6, and NEVER snack. I lost 45 pounds (35 lbs in the first 6 mos of doing this) and 10 lbs this last year. I think the no-snacking rule is what helps me, nothing with calories in between meals and nothing for 3 to 4 hours before bed. Give it a try. Eating this way is supposed to help cortisol levels, hormones, etc. The other thing I love about eating this way is I am NEVER hungry. Never get the munchies, no cravings. Well I still crave chocolate and have some dark squares after breakfast, but that's all.

I know it is hard to eat in the morning, I still would rather not, no appetite in the morning, but I make myself because if I don't, then I end up eating dinner later and have indigestion at bedtime, not good.

Anyway, glad to hear you found a doctor who understands its not about willpower, its not about what you eat its about hormones. Good for you.

Hi, I worked as an educator in an endocrinologist's office (I'm a nurse) and we dealt with hypothyroidism/insulin resistance and other endocrine disorders. Here is the "secret" that helped me personally lose 115 pounds in six months and it helped many of my patients.

When you eat a meal, carbs turn to sugar and your body has to metabolize the sugar and therefore secretes insulin. Insulin makes you FAT. Even taking a diabetic who NEEDS insulin, once they start their injections they will usually gain 20 to 30 pounds quite quickly. Well, when you exercise, your blood sugar drops. Again, using an insulin-dependent diabetic for example, we tell them not to exercise before eating if they have taken their injection because it could cause their sugar to bottom out.

So, knowing this information, you want to keep your body from secreting insulin, which will make you fat or make weight loss next to impossible. So, ANY time you put something in your mouth you MUST exercise right afterwards in order to lower your blood sugar and keep your body from naturally secreting insulin. This doesn't have to be extreme exercise. For me personally I would get on the treadmill and walk about 20 minutes after each meal. I had patients who would do jump-n-jacks, dance, walk, really anything to get your heart rate up for 15 to 20 minutes. Once your heart rate is up, your blood sugar lowers, no need for your body to secrete insulin and I promise you that your body has no choice but to lose weight. Good luck to you:)

already feel like on treadmill with the work I do; however when I start my day at noon do not eat before I start and then have dinner before I finish my work day. I do not take 30 minutes off for either meal, working straight through. Like in my previous note, stated did not like breakfast although I did have a bowl of shredded wheat this morning because supposed to take the medicine with food. Having said this, the breakfast was around 9 o'clock. I had not had a bite to eat since about 5 o'clock last night, certainly not faminished and could have done without eating at 9 today. Thanks for what helps with the people you see.
