Home-based businesses

What are your thoughts on home-based businesses like with a multi-level marketing company?  I have been hearing there is huge money making potential with these companies.

There's a difference between the old pyramid schemes and MLM. - Judy

[ In Reply To ..]
I think good money can be made with direct sales versus MLM. If you have an excellent product which "allows" you to use unlimited venues online to sell it, the profit is yours. I used to be with one MLM company that sells an excellent weight loss/nutrition line. I could have done well if I'd been allowed to sell it on eBay, but it was not allowed. I was my own discount customer and used it to lose over 150 pounds, though. I was not interested in really doing the multilevel part of it, having a "downline", but my "upline" was full of millionaires, so it is possible.

I like direct sales, and am still searching for items to buy low and resell for profit on eBay, Bonanza, Amazon, or even my own Shopify website.

Also, all sales don't have to be online; that was just my main venue, as I'm a homebody and live in a rural area. For you, things could be different.

If there is any real "pyramid" scheme out there that we need to beware of, I think it is called "working for someone else", as many of us do in positions with medical transcription. The guys at the top of those pyramids make the most money. But none of it is illegal (except, of course, in those situations where we work some hours for free, which is definitely illegal, but "they" get away with it, don't they?).

So, for an MT who has worked herself to the bone for someone else, maybe MLM would be a welcome change, and much more profitable, with an incredibly flexible schedule..

Good luck whatever you decide.

Taxing BusinessesDec 13, 2012
An article on NPR talking about how added tax on some small businesses could lead them to hire more people or buy new equipment.  It also talks about the flip side, how for some small businesses, the tax would make it harder for them to expand. "For some 97 percent of small business owners, that higher rate is irrelevant. They make less than $250,000 a year. And for those whose income works out to be just over that threshold, one way out of paying that higher tax rate could be to hire on ...

A Bill To Provide An Incentive For Businesses ToJul 31, 2014
Blocked by 42 Republicans (see link below for senate roll call). This is a bill that would have potentially helped our profession of medical transcription by disallowing tax breaks for such as the big MTSOs on their overseas operations. They won't even let the teeniest incentive to get jobs back here come to a vote. I have come to the conclusion Republicans do not want Americans to have decent jobs, they also want to cut any benefits due to them taking away our jobs. What exactly do the ...

Businesses To Receive Incentive For Hiring Illegal Immigrants, Report SaysNov 26, 2014
Businesses will have a $3,000-per-employee incentive to hire illegal immigrants or native-born workers under President Obama’s sweeping action on illegal immigration. Because of a kink in ObamaCare, businesses will not face a penalty for not providing illegal immigrants health care, The Washington Times reports. Illegal immigrants are ineligible for public benefits such as buying insurance on ObamaCare’s health exchanges. Congressional aides condemned the loophole saying it puts ...

Peer-based ModerationJan 15, 2015
Moderators are thinking about doing peer-based moderation based upon the number of likes/dislikes in a post (see Main Board).  Basically, if the amount of dislikes outnumbers the amount of likes, the post can be removed.  Thoughts? Obamacare Architect: We'll Kill Job-based Health PlansApr 06, 2015
