Dog Food Recalls

Posted: Sep 4, 2013

I don't know how many people follow the recalls but I need to warn you about another dog food that's NOT on recall. . . Beneful dog food...

Sadly, our baby had ALL of these symptoms, not in order, not daily, and not all of them, so her symptoms weren't recognized. Tests didn't show anything wrong. I did research but it was too late. Her BUN and creatinine was "off the charts" at her last visit and there was no hope for her - yet this never showed up in the other blood tests. She had to be put down from kidney failure two weeks ago.

It isn't a fluke that 644 pets have died because of it. I'm posting a link for symptoms. If you know anyone that feeds their babies Beneful, please warn them. If I could warn one person and save one baby, it will be worth it. :(

I'm so saddened by your loss. It should never have happened. I'm pretty sure this isn't the first recall for Wellness. It's always heartbreaking to lose a pet, but this was murder!

kidney failiure - me

I had two cats, gave them the same food, they preferred. They preferred Fancy Feast Chicken dry cat food. The older cat (only about 14) went into kidney failure. First she was excessively thirsty, then later, she didn't want to eat. When I took her to the vet they gave me an IV bag with saline to give her every day. She eventually died anyway, she kept throwing up and hiding. My other cat is alive and healthy. But I give her some wet food once in a while so its not always dry food.

High magnesium in cheap, even not so cheap name brands - for cats causes urinary

problems.

My male stopped urinating and the vet said that Meow Mix, Little Friskies, all those, have high mag counts which cause sediment and crystal buildup in urine and ultimate blockage that leads to kidney failure.

He had to be hospitalized, catheterized, sedated, IV antibiotics, etc. to save his life.

He's now on prescription cat food, low in mag, but there are other non-Rx brands that are good for urinary tract with low magnesium.

My other cat also eats the "good" food and it is amazing what a difference it made in his coat. He used to be all rough and bristly and would chew off blotches of fur. Now he is as smooth as velvet with no bald spots!

Good cat food (probably same goes for dog food) is not cheap, but in the long run, if you happen to have to go through a urinary problem, and don't want to euthanize, it is much less expensive and SO much better for your pet overall.

I am so sorry for your loss.

so sorry, BT - sm

I would definitely contact Purina. I have provided a "snopes" link for some backstory; it also includes the phone number for Purina.

My rule of thumb with pet food is to avoid any products that contain GMOs (frequently corn or wheat) or chemicals (such as artificial colors). If it doesn't say non-GMO, it's most likely GMO.

She was considered our baby and we miss her terribly. She was so smart, a clown, and she "spoke" to us daily. We had to spell certain words so she wouldn't know what we were talking about but her ears would perk up as if she was trying to recognize that word and put it in her "file cabinet" because sooner or later, she would come to know what it meant.

At night, DH would sit on the floor by her bed, talk to her, hug her, rub her belly, and play with her and her favorite toy. Heck, it got so that he paid more attention to her than me, but that was okay. :)

She was only 7 and should have had at least 4-5 more years with us. At Christmas, the first year, she was upset because everyone got a gift but her, so every year after that, we would buy and wrap a present for her. She would open her gift and carry it around to show everyone before going to her bed with it.

I notified the FDA. I won't notify Purina since they don't seem to care according to others who lost their baby, but I'm warning everyone I can think of so it could help avert a tragedy.

sorry for your loss - tristen

Please everyone educate yourself. Google commercial pet food ingredients and after that buy holistic. Everything and anything that is not fit for human consumption goes into commercial pet food. I do not want my companions to eat anything that is not fit for me to eat.

I switched after reading this and talking with some friends. - Mom22dogs

I did some research. I had been feeding my dogs Beneful for years with no apparent problem, but now am gradually switching them over to 4-Health I want my babies to live a long, healthy life!

dog food recall - Chelly Auldridge

I am very sorry for your loss, but thank you for putting out the warning to others. I almost lost my choc. lab a few years back when a lot of people were losing pets to problem food. I was feeding Pedigree at the time. She was showing signs of sickness. I immediately went on line to look for a better food and found "Life's Abundance", have been feeding that ever since, and my lab is doing great. Now may not be the best time, but down the road if you are looking for a better food to feed, let me know. Both my dogs and cats are on it and have been for over 5 years now. My website is "QualityPetAndPeopleProducts.com" and the food is Life's Abundance (they have never had a recall in more than 10 years, plus it is made in USA). Again, sorry for your loss but also for informing others of what is out there.

Won't touch the 4Health or Taste of the Wild. So, we're done spending a fortune on dog food. We're going back to Beneful. It seems to be the only thing she likes. Thank heavens, we only bought the small bags and they are gone now. On the positive side, as long as she's not eating much, she might lose some weight.  LOL ...

Cat With Possible Food Allergies?Apr 24, 2013
Does anyone have a cat with food allergies?  My white/tabby mix seems to always be itching but does not have fleas.  His white ears are frequently pink and warm and he scratches quite a bit.  Last night I noticed him licking his belly and it, too, was quite pink. We have been round and round with this kitty since we inherited him from my MIL.  He was always a puker and I have improved that condition with different food and hairball treats, but I'm wondering if the pukin ...

Well, the very next day, DH went to get Blue Buffalo and instead came home with a 5 lb. bag of 4health ($6) and Taste of the Wild  ($12) instead (he always listens to sales people). We started her on 4health and she didn't touch it the first day unless we put in 1/2 can of wet and veggies. The second day she ate it with no problem. She also seems to be 'full' after eating and isn't crying or whining. The next day, she didn't even touch her breakfast until after lun ...

About Picking Up Restautant Food And TipMay 10, 2010
We were talking at my office about picking up restautant food, and whether or not a tip is justified. Example, if you call in an order to a restaurant like Claim Jumper (citing an example a co-worker used) and you swing by to pick it up on the way home, would you tip? Technically, you're not in the restaurant and getting service. Typically, a tip is given due to the service provided by the waitstaff. I said maybe one would be justified if you stayed parked and they brought it to you. I usua ...

Food For Thought..I Found This To Be A Jun 25, 2012
very interesting insight... When I was a child growing up in the late 1940s and early 1950s one of my favorite radio programs was the continuing saga of The Lone Ranger. I would huddle next to the radio every night to follow the adventures of the Lone Ranger and his faithful companion, Tonto. Unfortunately, the program aired just about my bed time and, as often as not, my parents would insist that I miss part of the program and keep to the schedule they'd deemed appropriate. One nigh ...
