Decency in America

Posted: Sep 24, 2010

After reading the problems with neighbors on here I'd like to input one of my pet peeves.  Men or women who cuss in public loud enough for everyone to hear.  I was at the mall and this guy was on the cell phone Fing this and Fing that.  I gave him "the look" and he just got louder.  What ever happened to common curtousy.  Like saying excuse me in the  store when you walk in front of someone?  Like the teenagers who throw stuff out of the car and the people who walk their dogs without doggie bags!  We wonder why other countries think we are barbarians - well, Dah - we don't even show respect to each other.  Sometimes I think we are getting more and more uncivilized.  My mother passed a long time ago and if she could see the world today - it would give her another heart attack!

I am glad you brought up the subject of cell phone conversations in public. I was at the food court at our local mall, and some guy was at the next table which was very close to mine, F'ing everything possible. That was bad enough. Then he started laughing and was using very vulgar language, talking about a woman. My mom always said when she got older that she would never want to be raising children with the way the world is. The other day I went to our local Fair, which is a big one. There was a lineup at the door to get into the Circus, which everybody just loves. (No elephant acts, etc. I would not go to that; they just had an act with some rescue dogs who were precious.) Anyhow, everyone was lined up for about 30-45 minutes to get a seat. Over in the corner of the room was a group of young girls about 14 years of age, who decided they wanted to sit and rest in the corner instead of standing in line like the rest of us. Of course, when the guy opened the door to the Circus guess who got up and pushed to the very front of the line and got seats in the front row? Makes me want to scream.

Someone mentioned further down on the board about "too many rights" and taking them to extremes. Using vulgarity is one of our "rights", but it's also our right to be out in public without being fearful or offended by our fellow Americans!

I for one, have absolutely no problem telling foul mouthed people to either lower their voices, take their conversations elsewhere or notify the manager of an establishment. If that doesn't work, I HAVE called the police. (a mother at McDonalds of all places, was cussing up a storm on her phone while I was there. There happened to be a policeman there also. I asked what could be done about it and he said "plenty", went over and talked to the lady. She turned 7 shades of purple, was obviously furious, but got off the phone and looked around at the other people there. EVERYONE applauded the officer and miss potty mouth promptly gathered up her children and left!)

If I am at a theater and get disturbed by this type of behavior I have told the managers to either refund my money or make the people leave. 9 times out of 10, they are made to leave.

Sometimes it takes nothing more than a simple "excuse me, can you please mind your language" to get someone to stop, but there are always those who prefer confrontation and get louder. Mall security often removes these people at our local mall.

No one should be forced or subjected to rudness, vulgarity and lewd behavior. We need to speak up and let others know that THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

The advent for the cell phone has opened up a door - SM

that should have never been opened. We can now have private, even intimate, phone conversations out in public places and there are just some people who are oblivious to the fact that everyone can hear what they are saying or there are people who just simply don't care. They don't need to keep their voices down, we just need to stop listening! That's their attitude.

Cell phones have made us a rude society, from talking loudly in public or texting when someone in the flesh is trying to communicate with you to not turning them off in movie theaters. People have just forgotten how to behave. Common courtesy and etiquette is being lost from generation to generation. Kids are being taught how to be polite anymore.

Oh, and don't even get me started on how texting has butchered the English language and the ability of our young people to spell! We are raising a generation of rude, crude, babbling idiots!

Two-way conversations - Christine

Last week I was out for my coffee at my favorite place where I go to read, have a quiet cup of coffee and just have some time to clear my head. I young woman came in and seated herself at the table on the other side of the fireplace. She wasn't there two minutes until it started. She calls a male friend and has the darn thing on speaker so we can not only be bothered with HER loud voice, but now we can hear the other guy's equally loud voice as well. This went on for almost 1/2 hour. I was annoyed and even raised my voice a few times and told her we don't need to hear everything they have to say. She obviously didn't or couldn't hear me, and kept on until they were finished talking. However, a few years ago I was on Amtrak coming home from seeing the WKC Dog Show in New York. Someone had a two-way conversation going and they were immediately told by the man in charge to "GET IT OFF SPEAKER." His voice definitely meant business. I was impressed, and I remember thinking at the time someone finally stood up for what is fair to others.

Saw this posted on a political board - sorry, can't remember where:   1) Only in America could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund raising event.2) Only in America could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when we have a black President, a black Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal workforce is black. 12% of the population is black.3) Only in America could we have had the two people most ...

This is an attempt to trump Trump.  Trump and others have accused him of being too calm and too soft-spoken, so he is trying to prove and remind people that he has had a temper in the past --- perhaps before anti-anxiolytics?   Please, people, you must go with Rubio.  Will the Republican party wake up and realize the joke is on them soon enough.  The pathology of the Trump and Carson phenom must be revealed. ...

I have read and heard some parts of the book and let me tell you, it is sound, truly believable, and well, scary. It put me in the "know" about what is going on in our world today. I have to admit, I am mad, but I have come to the conclusion that I must not get this way. Who wants to feel this way after r ...

Half Of America In Poverty?Jan 02, 2012
Recent reports suggest that almost 50% of Americans are in poverty or at a "low income" level. The claim is based on a new supplemental measure by the Census Bureau that includes health care, transportation, and other essential living expenses in the poverty calculation. The concept of "low income" is controversial. It has been defined as earnings between 100 and 199 percent of the poverty level, a claim which, if true, would place every American family making $50,000 or less at a near-poverty le ...
