Cat with possible food allergies?

Posted: Apr 24, 2013

Does anyone have a cat with food allergies?  My white/tabby mix seems to always be itching but does not have fleas.  His white ears are frequently pink and warm and he scratches quite a bit.  Last night I noticed him licking his belly and it, too, was quite pink.

We have been round and round with this kitty since we inherited him from my MIL.  He was always a puker and I have improved that condition with different food and hairball treats, but I'm wondering if the puking is also an allergy?

Just trying to get some ideas before we head off to the vet.

Mites maybe? - see msg

Could have mites. They're very tiny.

Also, if you are one of those who bathes their cat (which one shouldn't do) that could certainly cause an itching, sore problem on their skin. Or if you are one to shave their cat (which one shouldn't really do) that can cause a problem.

If the cat is outdoors a lot, he could have contracted one of the poisons--ivy, oak or sumac.

I would definitely take the poor thing to the vet.

Thanks. Will look closer for mites. He - Frustrated

is an indoors-only cat, and I don't bathe him; he does a really good job of that himself :-)

I will definitely take him to the vet. I was holding off 'til payday as we have very expensive "boutique" vets and then the more practical horse-based practices that are cheaper but not so thorough and I was trying to figure out which way to go.

Glad you don't bathe him - see msg

I'm happy to hear you don't bathe your cat. It isn't good for them. They have special "rough" tongues and plenty of natural enzymes specifically designed to keep themselves cleaned and their coats and skin well balanced.

If anybody here is bathing their cat, don't tell me about it. Personally, I think their hate of water is a built-in instinct to keep people from messing up their natural bathing process.
If you have a long-haired cat with a thick under- - coat (I have Persians), sometimes (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
you DO have to bathe and clip them. Even every-day combing out doesn't always prevent matts from forming, and sometimes the only way to get rid of the is to clip them. Shaving right down to the skin isn't great, but turning the clippers with the direction of the hair, instead of against it, results in a longer-length cut. The cats love it because they feel so much better, and can bathe themselves afterward. (Long haired cats have more hairball problems because the hair gets caught on their tongues, and the rough tongues makes spitting it out nearly impossible. If not bathed, their hair gets greasy, which makes it matt even more.

Show cats get bathed all the time, sometimes weekly. You don't just throw them in a sink with dishwashing liquid. The shampoo & conditioner I use on my Persians comes from a salon. A good conditioner not only gives them a soft shiny coat, but helps their skin, too. Of course, I'm talking about bathing cats that are NOT allergic to shampoo or conditioner. The rinsing-out on long-haired cats has to be well-done... nothing left on the hair or the skin. With really long-haired Persians, the best way to ensure the soap is completely rinsed out is to have them stand in water deep enough to "float the coat".

Also, you don't drop a cat into a deep bathtub... would make any cat hate water. Ideally, they should be bathed in a kitchen sink with a mat on the bottom so their feet don't slip, and with the use of a sprayer.

Ear scratching in cats can be significant for food allergies. I foster cats for a local rescue. Try changing the food to a salmon-based dry food - or one for sensitive skin and stomach - which may solve both of your problems. Might try opening a fishoil capsule on his food, too. Hope this helps.

Thanks! My poor local pet store owner has - Frustrated

[ In Reply To ..]
supplied me with all types of food samples, most of which "Foster" turned his nose up at or puked up. (He's a very hefty guy despite the puking). I've stayed away from grains as I know they can be problematic, but I can't say I have tried a strictly salmon-based food. I will try the fishoil capsule too, as well as getting him to the vet.

Just picked up Before Grain Salmon - Frustrated

[ In Reply To ..]
dry food and he is chowing on it. Also got a bottle of wild salmon oil. Trying the new food tonight and will add in the oil tomorrow morning so I don't assault his delicate system all at once. I hope this helps. If he has no change overnight, I will get him to the vet tomorrow for sure. Thanks again!

My older cat does great on Before Grain - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I have an 18yo female who has always had vomiting and skin issues. I finally changed her to Before Grain chicken, and she is doing great. I have been buying it for a couple of years now and her coat is much better and less vomiting (unless she eats the cheap stuff, for my other cats), but I can't recommend it highly enough. I think some cats can't tolerate the wheat in the commercial foods. Good luck!

Hmm, sounds like me before I went gluten-free - NoMoreItch

[ In Reply To ..]
If this Before Grain cat food is in business to be gluten-free, you might be on to something. Your kitty sounds just like me before I went gluten-free. Except for the licking, of course, but that was only because I couldn't reach far enough with my tongue.

It might take more than a few days to see noticeable improvement. Took me a few weeks to a month.

If he is overweight and irritable, that fits, too.

Cat food doesn't have to come from a can. You can boil inexpensive cuts of chicken. They love liver and giblets. Minced cooked green beans and other veggies to mix in. Rice is ok, too, since it does not contain gluten.
I will double check, but I think it is gluten-free - Frustrated

My friend is probably the world's strongest proponent of a gluten-free diet; it is associated with all sorts of things from celiac disease to ADD to fibromyalgia. I personally know two kids whose ADHD symptoms have vastly improved by removing gluten from their diet. One is off medication completely and one is on a very small dose.

use glass or ceramic for water - never plastic

plastic grows bacteria. Make sure you clean the water dish daily.

Yep. I have one that cannot have anything that comes - from a cow or she projectile barfs

[ In Reply To ..]
Sasha is allergic to anything from a cow - beef cat food, dairy, cheese, etc. It's horrible.

Lucky the wonder cat has issues with organ meat and too much seafood and he develops stones in his urine (which led to a $6000 surgery 2 years ago).

Your kitty could have environmental allergies - my sister had a dog who was allergic to grass. The puking absolutely could be a sign of the allergy - that's how Sasha's manifests itself when she has anything beef.

Have you tried one of the grain free foods? It could be a grain issue.

If you can find it, you might try a small dose of Chlor Trimeton. It's one of the very few over the counter meds you ocan give a cat. I'm just not sure they make the really low dose one any more and it absolutely cannot be the one with tylenol in it. Your vet may give you some or they may give you prednisone. Is the cat easy to give pills to? The more I think about it, the more I think prednisone might be the way to go. It's cheap and if you can give him pills, relatively easy.

I haven't had him very long so I haven't - Frustrated

[ In Reply To ..]
had to pill him yet, but he's a very compliant kitty, so there's hope. I'd like to try the diet route before resorting to medications, though. My older cat was on steroids for his asthma and it made him bulk up. He seems to be less red this morning :-)

Check the ingredients in your pet food - pet lover

Corn is the #1 ingredient that can cause pet allergies. On the side from MT work, I am a distributor for a pet food made by a holistic vet. Check your ingredients. I can't post my website here, but if you want to read more info. about it, contact me and I will send it to you. Good Luck!

Dogs With Allergies...Feb 23, 2012
My dogs definitely cannot have poultry or corn, and wheat is questionable.  I am trying to find dental chews/biscuits.  I'm using Zuke's Z-bones right now but the problem is that one of my dogs is just biting/breaking it into chunks and swallowing the chunks, not much good for his teeth and gums!  He chews his crunchy dog food and regular treats so I was hoping maybe I could find some dental biscuits of some sort, but everything I'm finding has wheat or chicken ...

Question Regarding Allergies. (sm)May 05, 2010
My 24-year-old daughter started breaking out in a rash yesterday.  At first she thought maybe it was a heat rash, but then overnight she started to feel a little feverish.  This morning she woke up and the rash was tripled in amount of bumps and all over her body.  Plus she has been dizzy and very nauseated.  She went to urgent care and they told her that it was an allergic reaction to shrimp she had eaten.   They just gave her a shot of prednisone and some Benadryl ...

I have a lady who comes to clean every other week. I have 4 cats and they are all long haired and yes they do shed. This person has now worked here probably at least 3 months or longer. This past week she said was sick, visited her doctor with chest tightness. I asked if she had ever had asthma. I did as a child and had 2 bad recurrences as an adult and this sounds somewhat like that. Her doctor went down a list of things and one thing asked, are you around animals.
