Baby Mice

Posted: Jun 11, 2010

I know he should have left well enough alone, but DH found a mommy and 5 baby mice in our shed.  He brought their bedding and the mice into the house to show me.  Mommy escaped and we can't find her.  Does anyone know what I can do for those poor babies?  After I put the dogs to bed at night, I leave out trails of cheese for Mommy, leading to the babies, hoping she'll come back.  Sure, they're rodents, but I feel terrible.

Put them back in the shed where you found them. She will no doubt locate them easier that way than by following a trail of cheese into a human home where she did not want to be in the first place. You or your husband should learn to leave mother nature well enough alone. Mice have been having babies out in the "wild" for a long long time without human intervention. Just my opinion.

While i agree that you should probably put them back outside, it is for a different reason. I won't be so harsh about leaving nature alone. I had mama and baby field mice eating out of my bird feeders next to my office window at home. They made a lovely home under my deck and I thought they were very entertaining and cute - UNTIL they got into my house, started eating things out of my pantry and making nests in my closet. Very, very difficult to get them out of the house. You do not want mice in your house. Get them out ASAP. They multiple very, very quickly and are dirty.

Not really any advice, just wanted to say - jmho

something nice compared to what that other poster said. I think you have a lot of compassion....hmm, maybe others should get some too! Good luck, hope mommy returns!

I second that - anonymoose

I'm sure you didn't come to have fingers wagged at you. You only asked for advice on how to get the mama mouse back to the babies. If it was me I would put the babies back where they were because maybe there is a scent there that the mama would recognize, and I would put a trail of food that you know mice like leading from the house back to the barn (or wherever it is you said they were in the first place)

I also want to say bless you for being so compassionate and caring towards natures little creatures. They sure are cute things and understand totally.

Wish you the best of luck and please let us know if momma makes it back.

Try peanut butter instead of cheese as mice - dont really like it NM

Is mom in the house? - DD

They do make traps that don't kill a mouse! My MIL had those because her grandkids thought her killing one of God's creatures was horrible. And yes, peanut butter works the best!

what was your DH thinking? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
He did more harm than good.

In case mother mouse comes back she will now reject her baby mice since they have now "strange" scents (human = DH and yours) on them. I bet that she will not come back. A lot of animals to this.

Who in his right mind brings mice and rats into one's house? They are pests and multiply in a frightening rate. Do you want that they take over your house, because if they settle into your house, it will be you who has to leave, not them.
IMO this is animal love gone astray. What are your neighbors saying to your mice farm?

Normally, people pay a lot of money to keep their houses pest-free!

Is there any subject that can be discussed that does not lead to a confrontation? People say they are expressing their opinion, but an opinion is saying what they might have done, not a tongue lashing. The poster was simply asking for advice because she cares.

Thanks God that I am not your neighbor, - sm

you lure mice into your house?

My take on it - Not sure

[ In Reply To ..]
When I read the initial post I thought they probably returned the babies to the shed and left food, hoping she would come back. Of course, I could be wrong.

Please Help - MiceAug 06, 2013
I live in a very old brick house, and over the years have occasionally had mice, but usually in the winter. I've learned to keep my food in either plastic containers or in the fridge. For the past two nights, my dogs have awakened me by barking and sniffing in various spots on my first floor, not just the kitchen, and yesterday I saw one running across my living room carpet. I'm not scared of mice, but now I'm starting to freak out. I have traps set everywhere that my dogs c ...

MICE!Oct 28, 2015
Hello.  My husband has recently seen mice in our closet in the bathroom.  My question is what is the best way to get rid of the mice, cat or poison?  If we get a cat, will the cat need to hunt them down or will the mice leave when the cat takes residence?  My thoughts are if we get poison, we will have to keep getting it because the mice will keep coming back.  Thanks so much for any input. ...

We're Having A Baby Girl!!! SmFeb 23, 2010
Ok...so sorry if this doesn't work.  I haven't posted a picture on here in a long time.  I just had to share the news...we are going to have a baby girl!  Jocelyn Mae is due to come into this world on June 5, 2010.  I'm 25 weeks 4 days today and my belly is definitely making it harder to work.  I work in-house in the hospital that I will deliver at, so the plan is to just work until I feel I can't / shouldn't...who knows....maybe I'll just ...

Baby Horse And MomJul 19, 2010
Just wanted you all to know that the baby miniature horse was even more precious in person!  She just stuck to her mom and they walked side by side in the pasture.  One of the girls who lives on the farm picked her up and brought her to the fence so we could pet her.  Baby's mom was eating hay under a shade tree with her back turned. Suddenly she realized that her baby was not beside her.  She made some very loud cries and galloped over to the fence to protect her litt ...

A Miracle BabyJan 24, 2014
Oh, my goodness.  This little angel, Grace Anna, has a Facebook page that features her singing.  She's 3 years old and was born with a myriad of rare anomalies, one of which is dwarfism.  But it doesn't stop her from enjoying life and letting the whole world know it!  She sings on key, and she knows all the words to "Amazing Grace," "This Little Light of Mine," "You Are My Sunshine," and "Star-Spangled Banner!" Her mommy and daddy had lost all 3 of their previous ba ...

So Not Having Nursed A Baby I Have Got ToOct 07, 2015
Just saw where a lady was upset because she wanted to nurse her baby at an airport, wanted some privacy and was told she could get that in the bathroom. She did not want to do that, said germs and then the airline person suggested the pet room where apparently the animals go to use the bathroom, I think. Having never nursed but thought a woman, if traveling, could nurse ahead and store the milk somehow. Women with babies have traveled for years. Why now do others think they are so entitled to ha ...

Need To Lose Baby WeightFeb 28, 2012
I had a baby 2 years ago and I have not worked out a day since then (bad I know).  Now, with summer coming up, I need to tone up and get in shape.  Anyone have a good workout they can share to lose the baby weight.  I've got about 10 pounds to lose, which isn't bad, but I'm so out of shape and kind of puffy, no muscle!  I really don't want to join a gym as I have a treadmill and some weights but really have no idea what kind of workout to do. ...

Husband Favors His Son Over Our Baby GirlMar 17, 2010
I just don't understand how my husband can favor his 7-year-old son from a previous relationship over our new daughter.  She is 4 months old and the only child he seems to be concerned about is his son.  His son is here Thursdays-Sundays and when he is here, he pays no attention to our baby.  Right now, she is not noticing this I guess because she is so young but I am afraid as she gets older, she will begin to pick up on this and that just breaks my heart.  So many litt ...

Mama's Baby, Daddy's Maybe, Need Clarification HereJan 01, 2013
Years ago when a couple married and the wife has a baby, the father automatically put on the birth certificate as the father, did not matter if actual father or not, just the way it was done. Fast forward many years. Heard that Kim Kardashian was pregnant and the father of her child is Kanye West. Ok, but wait a moment. She is still married to the Humphries guy, the divorce has not been finalized. Talk on a television program this morning if the baby would be a Kardashian or a West. Can a pe ...

Question About Baby Shower Etiquette.Jan 29, 2015
My friend is having her second baby and she decided that I should throw her baby shower this time.  I said sure and I suggested a diaper shower since this is her second baby in a relatively short period of time (2 years) and she has found out she is having the same sex, so in my mind at least, she already has all the "stuff."  She seemed very offended by this, so fine I decided to call it a baby shower and let people decide on their own.  Now my friend has taken to checking in wit ...
