Anyone out there research their family history?

Posted: Jan 20, 2010

I have been researching my family for a little over a year now and am totally obsessed. Anyone out there feel the same way? I love talking with my grandparents about their lives and relatives and then researching those people to find out more.;

I am an avid family historian/genealogist - anon

I love working on family history and sometime find myself up til 3 or 4 am on weekends searching. You are so so lucky to have your grandparents to tell you about stories of their lives and relatives. My grandmother passed away before I ever became interested and my mom said if she had known how fascinating this was she would have asked her more. My grandmother's uncle was the Mayor of Preston Lancashire in early 1900s and I found pictures of him in parades and uniform, etc. I am lucky that I found a distant cousin of mine who lives in Canada (her great great grandfather was the brother of my great, great, great grandmother) and she sent me a letter her grandmother wrote to her that described what life was like for her growing up in England.

Genealogy is most definitely addicting and I too am obsessed.

How do you get started? I've always wanted to trace sm - ChiaPet

Here's how I started - anon

Gather as much information as you can about relatives. Names, dates of birth/death, where born, etc. There are many genealogy sites you can get some information:

Ancestry.com
cyndislist.com
cousinconnect.com
genforum.genealogy.com
familysearch.org
ancestorhunt.com
genealogysearch.org
searchforancestors.com

And if you just put in genealogy search, or genealogy with your last name tons of stuff will come up.

As a matter of fact on the cousinconnect a few months back I put a message out that I was looking for an old grammar school and girl scout friend. I had been searching for her for 30 years (after grammar school she moved away and I didn't know where she had gone). I have her maiden name and where she last lived, and within 24 hours I had three people contact me with her information and I found her.

I also ended up finding a cousin of mine (actually she would be a cousin to my mom), and she was able to give me so much more information about my relatives.

What I find very fascinating about my family history is where the people lived. I have relatives that came from England, Scotland, Canada, Ireland, and all other countries. I found my granmothers uncle who was a mayor, I obtained a death certificate of my great grandfather and finally found out how he died (my great grandmother never told anyone anything about him). I found the house he died in and looked it up on google. It's just fascinating fascinating information.

So, I would say if your parents are alive, or cousins, etc, and can give you any information, it's a start. Sometimes I even would type in their names with any other information I could find in google (like for instance I would put Tom Dooley 1940 Paris France) in google and then see what that popped up. One thing for sure is once you get started you'll most likely find yourself up at 4 am.

Need Ideas For A Family Reunion Family Tree Display Or Art Or????Nov 20, 2010
My grandma's side of the family has a biannual family reunion and it's a pretty big party.  Every reunion a different families "hosts" the reunion.  Hosting generally means they pick a location for everyone to gather, book the facility and caterers, send out the newsletter, and contact local motels and campgrounds for special group rates, etc.  Then of course their in charge of the events at the dinner like giving prizes for who traveled the farthest, the oldest, the you ...

I've Been Doing Some Research On Oil.Jul 16, 2010
A lot of debate has been going on in regards to drilling for oil especially in light of the tragic oil spill in the Gulf.  Many people do not want to drill in our own country and I understand that.  There are risks involved.  However, technology has decreased the risks and I believe that if big oil companies had followed regulations and let inspections occur when they should have, that this recent disaster could have been avoided.  In saying that, I'm all for looking int ...

This Is MY Research May 30, 2012
Many conservatives argue that our economy can flourish only when the federal government gets out of the private sector’s way. Many progressives counter that in our free market system, there are times when the government needs to step in to protect the common good and ensure there is broad-based economic growth. This debate defines our politics today. Americans of all political persuasions, however, should agree that quick and decisive government action was necessary between 2008 and ...

I've tried to search online for the percentage of Americans receiving SS disability, the reasons for disability, etc.  Does anyone have a good site for this?  I'm also interested in children under the age of 18 receiving supplemental income payments for "disability".  I ask in part because I am of the firm belief that a great many of us are working while other abled persons drawing these type payments are not.  I also quite frankly do not understand how a child, wh ...

Not saying this will happen this election cycle, but I just thought you all might find this bit of history as interesting as I did Incumbent presidents who have been challenged while seeking reelection: Theodore Roosevelt challenged WH Taft in 1912 - Taft wins nomination. Robert Kennedy challenged Lyndon Johnson in 1968 - Johnson decides not to run in the face of several challengers and nomination goes to Hubert Humphrey, who loses to Nixon. Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford - Ford w ...

DO YOU REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007??? This tells the story, why Bush was so bad at the end of his term. Don't just skim over this, it's not very long, read it slowly and let it sink in. If in doubt, check it out!The day the Democrats took over was not January 2nd 2009, it was actually January 3rd 2007. This was the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress. The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for t ...

This law was enacted in 1994. It was expanded in 2006/2007.  For a lot more information, you should look up Chapter 119, title 18 of the U.S. Code.  The second report gives  little more info, which I will post a paragraph or two in a different typestyle so you all don't get confused and starting with the word "background." So, for those bashing Bush for starting electronic survellience, I'm sure you will agree that he was NOT President in 1994-1995 or did I miss so ...

what going on with this Bristol-thing.  The most telling are the right-wing and Teaparty websites.   What seems to be coming to light is that this wasn't just a "call your Teaparty friends and vote for Bristol" deal, it's now starting to look like manipulation and voter fraud for political gain.   One person said he tested ABC's online voting system, and discovered that, although you're limited to 5 votes per email address, you aren't limited to the ...

Confederate History MonthApr 09, 2010
"Virginia's governor made "an unacceptable omission" by not mentioning slavery when he proclaimed it Confederate History Month, President Obama says." I think our president needs to look at the Civil War and the reason for it. The Civil War was not all about slavery. It was about State's Rights. I'll admit that slavery was a huge mistake and should not have been done.  However, slavery is NOT the most egregious stain in our history. Slaughtering the native inhabi ...

A Bit Of History On Margaret SangerOct 07, 2012
Just a little bit 'cuz I'm getting tired of doing research today.  In 1921, Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood. In New York, Sanger organized the first birth control clinic staffed by all-female doctors, as well as a clinic in Harlem with an entirely African-American staff. The mission of the clinic in Harlem was to control and help limit the African American population. In 1929, she formed the National Committee on Fe ...

Raising The Debt Limit. A Little Bit Of HistoryApr 14, 2011
After World War II ended, the debt limit was reduced to $275 billion. Because the Korean War was mostly financed by higher taxes rather than by increased debt, the limit remained at $275 billion until 1954. After 1954, the debt limit was reduced twice and increased seven times, until March 1962 when it again reached $300 billion, its level at the end of World War II. Since March 1962, Congress has enacted 74 separate measures that have altered the limit on federal debt. Time Line from 1958-2011 ...

Did Anyone Watch The History Channel The Last 2 Days?Dec 16, 2010
Third Reich:The Rise and Third Reich: The Fall.  I found it very interesting, although the filming was pretty awful with all that flashing. The films were made by the German people. The Rise was the history and reasons of how Hitler came into power. It almost parallels the conditions in the U.S. today. The Fall showed some known facts about Hitler and his armies, but it also showed how tough the German civilians had it during and after the war. I knew that Hitler got so desperate duri ...
