There's a lot of scientific evidence of how our brains fool us and hide things from us and outright make things up. Knowing that, I wouldn't trust my senses. Mentally, I may be expecting someone not to like me and that fact alone could make me misinterpret their actions. This would, in turn, unconsciously, affect my actions toward that person.
I go for the conceited approach. I "sense" everyone loves me and thinks I'm wonderful and reciprocate by thinking the same of them.
