Republican strategy for many years now has been not to convince voters to vote for them by their ideas, their vision of the future, but to consolidate the base by unpleasant tactics and use various means to restrict voting of those who will vote against them.
On another note, I'm guessing the reason Lincoln was hated was vastly different than the reason Trump is hated, and I'm guessing (mainly by the fact he was assassinated) that the degree of hatred against Lincoln was of a different variety. I am not a Trump fan, but hate? Nah, just annoyance with him and those who voted him, and disbelief he was voted in, frankly.
He is an embarrassment, but a laughable one. He has slavish devotion to a dictator who has nothing to offer this country and by this he has put this country in danger of damaging our sovereignty by having one election which is questionable and it looks like another one which may also be compromised because Trump does not want to admit the first happened.
In case you don't recall, Lincoln was going to stop slavery. What kind of people were against that anyway?

Trump could not compare favorably intellectually with Lincoln or any other president, except maybe Bush, and at least Bush had a heart!
