It doesn't make sense to send a spokesperson out just to say "We aren't commenting on anything right now."

You don't send out a spokesperson in that case. If you don't have anything to say, don't make anyone available to take questions. It's really easy.

The only reason to send out a spokesperson is to get some kind of a message out.
