Using Canada as an example, if they charge us high tariffs on our exports to them, why shouldn't we charge high tariffs on their exports to us?

Or maybe we should just drop tariffs altogether between friendly democracies?

Everyone's had a friend or two in their life who just want to take and take. Smart people know when to end those relationships. We're talking about friendly countries here so negotiations are in order before ending relationships. What's happening now is just another step in the negotiation. But the principle is the same. If these negotiations fall apart, one or more of the countries will get new leadership who may or may not be willing to work together. Either way, it's not the end of the world.
