I expected Trump to extend waivers to close allies.
People are misinterpreting the purpose behind these tariffs. One, it is to confirm President Trump’s commitment to his “America First” concept. Second, and equally important, these tariffs fire a salvo across the bow of so-called “allies” that act rather more like adversaries (i.e., EU countries). They take advantage of our trade largess, but reciprocate with high import duties for U.S. goods. It is about time a President did this - and stuck by his word, unlike the feckless Bush II, who imposed tariffs and then backed down.
