You or, ideally, your hubby can ask what work the contractor is doing to the house. Keep it non-accusing, just curious. She did say it was "their" contractor, so you would not be ruining a surprise she is planning for your son. You may find out it is all legit, but if something hinky is going on, it will be up to your son to sort out. Just make sure you ask in front of DIL. As the saying goes, you should never assume...
