Hi 34: I am the OP. I hope you did not feel insulted. My post was only meant to point out the differences in values today from when I was raised in the late 1950 to 1960s.
You and your family sound kind of like my own life! My husband and I got married at 18 and 19 because we couldn't keep our hands off each other and were anxious not to get caught! Still can't keep our hands off each other but most nights sleep is more urgent nowadays! Love my life and kids and grandkids. I am lucky that we live near all of them.
Another thought: I think in many ways that I was taught marriage was not romantic. It was about money and security and respectability for the woman. My mom would teach us to find someone who "earned you a good living" and "didn't drink or run around or beat you." My sons all look for that in their partners, ironically.
