Agree with you that print, like newspapers and magazines, are definitely folding. Everybody goes to digital, instantaneous info for real-time news.

However, your generalizations are not accurate. In addition to working as an MT, I am also a writer. I still write for magazines. However, whereas it used to be 10-12 local magazines, now it's down to 2-3 major ones. Instead, however, I write more now for those print guides and magazines that are heavy in social interaction (tourism boards, travel magazines, cocktail and wine magazines, city-centric magazines, magazines that are Instagram savvy). The articles tend to be shorter, but I still average 70 cents to $1.00 a word (so a 200-word article is $140 to $200). So, no, it's not true that it is only science and technical magazines.

Again, I do agree with you that it is not as easy to get freelance writing gigs, but they are still available. I actually do both because I lucked out and am working for a great family-owned MT company and really enjoy it, but there is enough work in my region to go full-time in writing....at least for now.
