My friend's father was one of the persons who activated the Los Angeles County wide warning system during part of the Cold War. It took one person to do it. One Friday per month, the system was tested to make sure it was in working order. We’d hear the sirens clear across Los Angeles County.
For that period, I knew my father was the person who flipped the switch.
