Red Robin - My Opinion

Posted: Jan 12th, 2018 - 7:59 am In Reply to: Minimum wage = Layoffs (AGAIN!) - Realist

We have a Red Robin where I live. The ability to order from a device at the table or use a wait person has been an option long before the minimum wage law went into effect. If you’ve ever been in one of their restaurants you would know that most of them are huge and there can be long wait times, ordering from the table makes sense, especially for drinks from the bar. I think the minimum wage here went to $11 an hour in January and is going to $13.50 by 2020. I have seen prices at restaurants increase and we have lost several retail outlets and grocery stores since it happened. Restaurants have the choice of passing the increase on to customers in terms of higher prices, making everyone go part time or cutting staff as Red Robin is doing, those costs have to get covered somehow and the higher wage is actually backfiring for those who needed it the most. I saw a sign at one of our fast food places that they are hiring people for $14 to $16 per hour; to me there is something wrong with that when people with skilled nursing jobs and even scribes, make far less. Bus boy was never meant to be a job that pays the bills, most of those people move on anyway. The bottom line is that someone has to pick up the cost, so what is happening really should not be a surprise. I’m paid pretty well, but I’ve never seen $2.00 or $3.00 an hour wage increases like this in one fell swoop, now my salary isn’t keeping up but I’m expected to pay higher prices for services. Everything has consequences and is not always what it seems on the surface.
