to exist in an echo chamber that reinforces their ignorance and prejudices. Matt probably tried to make them (gasp!) think for themselves rather than blindly follow the lies the conmen (and conwomen) who make up the bulk of religious "leaders" are feeding them.
Matt is better off without these people. Maybe the experience will lead him to enlightenment and allow him throw off the shackles of religion entirely.
