First, Mueller won't be fired. There's no reason to fire him. He's being discredited so that anything he finds that would go against Trump can be ignored. "They stocked the panel with Hillary supporters. What do you expect?"
Second, the discrediting process works the other way too. It gets people talking about the lefties on Mueller's team. That will help bolster Trump's case if they don't find anything incriminating. "They had all those Hillary donors/supporters and they still couldn't find anything."
Third. This is the big one. By pretending like he's toying with the idea of firing Mueller, Trump is getting the lefties (and Never Trumpers) to come out and take a stand in favor of Mueller. Trump got them on record protesting the possible firing of Mueller. When whatever happens (see points 1 and 2), does happen, anti-Trumpers won't have anything to say about it.
If Trump is guilty happens, "Mueller was corrupt all that stuff he found is fake news. I wanted to fire him and appoint someone else, but no one supported me on that."
If Trump is innocent happens, "You can't call this a sham investigation! Even with all those Hillary people on the team he couldn't find anything. Regardless, you all know I wanted to fire him. Can we move on now?"
